Chapter 14: The Person Who Knew The Whole Truth

Nobody moved.

Dad stared at the paper like it couldn’t possibly exist.

I looked at him.

“Who wrote it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

His eyes were fixed on the name.

Finally, he whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

I felt confused.

“My grandfather?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“My father.””

I had never met my grandfather.

Dad always said he passed away before I was old enough to remember.

Amanda looked at Karen.

“That can’t be real.””

Karen shook her head.

“We verified the handwriting.””

Dad grabbed the paper.

His hands were trembling.

“How?””

Karen answered quietly.

“Because we found old letters written by him.””

Dad sat down.

The strongest person I knew looked completely broken.

“My father knew?””

Amanda nodded.

“He knew about Evan.””

Dad looked at her.

“You knew this too?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I only knew Evan was dangerous.””

Dad looked at the note again.

“What does it say?””

Karen read it carefully.

“It says: ‘The truth about Ethan’s inheritance was never about money. It was about who was willing to protect him.’”

I didn’t understand.

Dad did.

And that scared me.

“What does that mean?””

Dad looked at me.

“It means your grandfather knew someone would come after you.””

“Why?””

Dad took a breath.

“Because he knew our family had secrets.””

The next day, we went to Karen’s office.

Not because I wanted to.

Because Dad said we needed answers.

The room was quiet.

There were boxes everywhere.

Old family records.

Old photographs.

Things from before I was born.

Karen placed one photograph on the table.

It showed my mother.

My father.

Amanda.

And another man.

Evan.

They looked like a normal family.

That was the strange part.

People who hurt each other don’t always look dangerous.

Sometimes they look happy in pictures.

Karen pointed at Evan.

“He spent years pretending he didn’t care about the family.””

Dad stared.

“But he did.””

“Yes.””

She opened another file.

“He believed your father stole the life he deserved.””

Dad frowned.

“I never stole anything.””

“I know.””

Karen looked at me.

“But Evan blamed everyone.””

Then Amanda spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She looked nervous.

“I found something before.””

Dad stared.

“What?””

“A recording.””

My heart jumped.

“From where?””

Amanda looked at me.

“Your mother’s old house.””

Dad stood.

“You had a recording from my wife?””

Amanda nodded.

“I never listened to all of it.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

Karen took it carefully.

“We need to hear it.””

The room became silent.

The recording started.

At first, there was only static.

Then my mother’s voice.

Soft.

Tired.

But real.

My heart stopped.

“Ethan…”

I had not heard her voice in years.

Then she continued.

“If you are hearing this, something went wrong.””

Dad covered his mouth.

My mother’s voice continued.

“I need you to know something.””

A pause.

Then:

“The person you should be careful of is not the one everyone suspects.””

Everyone looked at Amanda.

But then my mother said the next words.

And nobody moved.

“It’s someone who has always been close to your father.””

Dad looked confused.

“Close to me?””

The recording continued.

“I found out who tried to take Ethan’s future.””

A long pause.

Then:

“And it wasn’t Evan.””

The room went completely silent.

Because we had spent days believing we knew the enemy.

But we were wrong.

My mother’s final words came through the speaker.

“The person behind everything…”

Static filled the room.

May you like

Then one final sentence.

“…is someone you trust more than anyone.””
