Chapter 11: The Man Who Claimed To Be My Father

Daniel arrived that afternoon.

I watched from the stairs as Dad opened the front door.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The two men just looked at each other.

Like they were carrying years of anger between them.

Daniel was older than I expected.

He had tired eyes.

The kind of eyes that looked like someone who had spent years regretting something.

“I need to talk to Ethan.””

Dad stepped in front of him.

“No.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“You disappeared.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know.””

“You missed his first day of school.””

Silence.

“You missed his birthdays.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I know.””

“You don’t get to walk back into his life because you suddenly feel guilty.””

Those words hurt.

Even I felt them.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

He knew I was there.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

I didn’t know what to do.

Part of me wanted to run.

Part of me wanted answers.

Slowly, I walked downstairs.

Dad immediately turned.

“You don’t have to talk to him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel looked at me.

His expression changed.

Like seeing me made something real.

“Because your mother asked me to come back.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“She never asked that.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She did.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence told me there was more.

Amanda walked into the room.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“You knew I would come eventually.””

Amanda nodded.

“I knew.””

Dad looked between them.

“Everyone knew except me?””

Nobody answered.

I felt that familiar feeling again.

The feeling of being the last person to know anything about my own life.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother wrote me a letter too.””

My eyes widened.

“Another letter?””

He nodded.

“She told me she didn’t know what would happen after she was gone.””

Dad looked angry.

“Don’t use her words to justify leaving.””

Daniel accepted that.

“I deserve that.””

Then he looked at me.

“But Ethan deserves the truth.””

I didn’t know why.

But I believed him.

Maybe because everyone else had been protecting me.

And Daniel was the first person who admitted he had made mistakes.

“What truth?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother was afraid someone would use your trust against you.””

Dad became serious.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The same person who tried to access it.””

Everyone became quiet.

Karen, who had arrived earlier, stepped forward.

“You know who it is?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward Amanda.

And Amanda immediately looked shocked.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“I didn’t want it to be true either.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Say the name.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“It was someone inside your family.””

The room went silent.

Dad looked around.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

May you like

And said:

“Your brother.””
