Chapter 10: The Photograph That Broke My World
I stared at the photograph in my hands.
I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
But I understood one thing.
My dad looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Afraid.
The picture showed my mother standing beside a man I had never seen before.
They were smiling.
They looked happy.
Like they were sharing a moment they didn’t want anyone else to know about.
I looked up.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than any answer could have.
Dad slowly sat down.
“Ethan…”
“Who is he?””
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
Dad rubbed his hands together.
Something I noticed he only did when he was nervous.
“That’s Daniel.””
“Who is Daniel?””
Dad looked away.
“He was someone your mother knew before me.””
Amanda quietly spoke.
“Your mother wanted to tell him something before she passed.””
Dad looked at her.
“You knew?””
Amanda nodded.
“I knew about Daniel.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Dad looked at me.
“Because we wanted to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody asks if I want the truth.””
The room went silent.
Even the adults stopped talking.
Because they knew I was right.
Karen slowly leaned forward.
“Ethan, there are things adults hide because they think they are making things easier.””
She paused.
“But sometimes secrets only make the pain bigger.””
Dad looked down.
Then he finally said:
“Daniel was your mother’s friend.””
“Only a friend?””
Dad hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He closed his eyes.
“When your mother and I first met, Daniel was already part of her life.””
I felt confused.
“So?””
“So he believed he had a connection to you.””
I stared.
“What connection?””
Nobody answered.
Then Amanda whispered:
“He believed he was your biological father.””
The words felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
I looked at my dad.
“No.””
My voice came out immediately.
“No.””
Dad moved closer.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I backed away.
Because the one thing I always knew was that Dad was my dad.
The person who made pancakes.
The person who held my hand.
The person who came home.
“You’re my dad.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Then why are they saying that?””
Dad looked at the photograph.
“Because your mother made a choice.””
“What choice?””
He swallowed.
“She chose to keep raising you with me.””
I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger?
Fear?
Confusion?
Everything mixed together.
Amanda stepped forward.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“Your mother loved your father.””
She looked at Dad.
“And she loved you.””
Then she looked back at me.
“Nothing changes that.””
But something had changed.
Because suddenly I wondered if everyone had been lying to me.
That night, I barely slept.
I kept thinking about the photograph.
About my mother.
About the man named Daniel.
About why my father looked so hurt.
The next morning, Dad knocked on my door.
“Can I come in?””
I nodded.
He sat beside me.
“I owe you an apology.””
“For what?””
“For letting you find out this way.””
I looked down.
“Are you my real dad?””
The question hurt him.
I could see it.
But he answered honestly.
“I am your father.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He took a deep breath.
“Biologically… I don’t know.””
The answer broke my heart.
Not because of Daniel.
Because Dad sounded like he was losing me.
I reached for his hand.
“You’re still my dad.””
His eyes filled with tears.
He hugged me.
And for a moment, everything felt okay.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What do you mean he’s back?””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Dad slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
And whispered:
“Daniel.””
