Chapter 7: The Father I Never Knew

For seventeen years, I'd believed my father was the man who taught me to ride a bicycle, kissed my forehead when I was sick, and held me through the first Christmas after my mother died.

Now I was standing in an attic, holding a letter that suggested he might not be my biological father.

And the woman who had spent years making me feel unwanted was the only person who seemed to know the truth.

"Dad?"" I whispered.

Michael looked at me, and the pain in his eyes frightened me more than his silence.

"Emily, I need you to understand something. Nothing in that letter changes the fact that I've raised you as my daughter.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He swallowed.

"Did you know?""

"No, sweetheart. I swear to you, I didn't.""

I wanted to believe him. Every memory I had of my father told me he was telling the truth.

But the letter had come from my mother.

And my mother had never given me a reason to doubt her.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"You knew there was a possibility someone else was my father?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

"I knew Claire had questions about the past.""

"What questions?""

"She never gave me a name.""

"You're lying!""

My voice echoed through the attic.

Vanessa flinched.

For once, I didn't care.

"You knew about the money. You knew Mom was afraid. You knew Eleanor was looking for me. And now you're telling me you don't know who my father is?""

"I didn't say that.""

My father stepped forward.

"Then tell us what you know.""

Vanessa stared at the letter.

"Claire received a photograph several weeks before she died. There was a man in it. She said he had contacted her after years of silence.""

"Who was he?"" I demanded.

"I don't know his name.""

"Where's the photograph?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she pointed toward the envelope.

"Claire kept it with the letter.""

I searched inside, but there was nothing else.

My father turned to her.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

"In my bedroom. Inside the locked drawer of my dressing table.""

"Why?""

"Because I took it after Claire died.""

My father stared at her.

"You stole a photograph from my dead wife's belongings?""

"I was trying to protect Madison and myself!""

"From what?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"From the possibility that everything we had was built on a lie.""

My father took a slow breath.

"Give me the key.""

She reached into her handbag and produced a small brass key.

He took it without another word.

I followed him downstairs.

The ruined dresses still lay in the metal container outside. Blue dye stained the patio stones, and the empty bucket sat beside the garden fence.

It was strange how quickly a terrible day could become something much worse.

A few hours earlier, I'd been worried about missing prom.

Now I was wondering whether the man I'd called Dad for seventeen years was my biological father.

We entered Vanessa's dressing room.

The space was larger than my bedroom, with mirrored wardrobes, velvet chairs, and a dressing table covered in expensive cosmetics.

My father unlocked the bottom drawer.

Inside lay a stack of envelopes, a jewelry box, and a small photograph tucked into a leather folder.

He handed it to me.

The man in the photograph looked to be in his early thirties. He had dark hair, a strong jaw, and eyes that seemed strangely familiar.

Beside him stood my mother.

She looked younger than I'd ever seen her, smiling beneath a bright summer sky.

On the back, someone had written a name.

*Daniel Brooks.*

Beneath it was a date from twenty years earlier.

"Brooks?"" I whispered.

"Like Eleanor Brooks?""

My father sat down heavily.

"Eleanor's family name was Brooks before she married. Claire was a Brooks too.""

I studied the photograph.

"Was he related to them?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not by blood. Daniel was Eleanor's business partner for a short time. He and Claire knew each other before Claire met Michael.""

My father looked up sharply.

"You told me Claire barely knew him.""

"I told you what Claire wanted you to believe.""

"Why would she hide him?""

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"Because Daniel disappeared from her life. She said he had made promises he couldn't keep.""

I turned the photograph over.

On the lower edge, almost hidden by the leather sleeve, was a handwritten phone number.

My father photographed it with his phone.

Then he called Eleanor.

She answered immediately.

"Michael? Have you found something?""

"We found a photograph of Daniel Brooks.""

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered, "Where did you get that?""

"Vanessa had it hidden in her dressing table.""

Eleanor's breathing changed.

"Is Emily there?""

I took the phone.

"I'm here.""

"My darling, I need you to listen carefully. Daniel wasn't just a man your mother once knew.""

"Then who was he?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"He was the man Claire planned to marry before she met Michael.""

My father closed his eyes.

I stared at the photograph.

"But she married Dad.""

"Yes," Eleanor replied.

"And she loved him. Don't ever doubt that.""

"Then why would she hide this?""

"Because Daniel returned shortly before Claire died. He told her something that changed everything.""

"What?""

Eleanor's voice dropped to a whisper.

"He claimed he had evidence that you were his daughter.""

My fingers went cold around the phone.

My father stood abruptly.

"That's enough. Emily doesn't need to hear this from strangers over the phone.""

Eleanor's voice sharpened.

"Michael, you need to hear the rest. Daniel didn't just claim to be Emily's father. He claimed Robert Hale had been helping him investigate the money stolen from your company.""

My father froze.

"What?""

"Robert was alive when Daniel contacted Claire. The story you were told about his death doesn't match the records I found.""

I stared at Dad.

"You said Robert died six months after Mom.""

"That's what the police report said.""

Eleanor continued.

"Then why did someone using Robert's identity send Claire a message three weeks before she died?""

My father grabbed the phone.

"What message?""

"A warning. It said she should stop searching for Daniel—or someone she loved would pay the price.""

The room went silent.

I looked at the photograph of the man who might be my biological father.

Then Eleanor delivered the final blow.

"Michael, Daniel is alive. And this morning, he contacted me.""
