Chapter 14: What Happened on the Night Mom Died

Vanessa didn't deny it anymore.

She sat at the kitchen table with a glass of water trembling between her hands while Eleanor placed my mother's letter beside her.

"Tell us everything," my father said.

Vanessa stared at the table.

"I met Robert seventeen years ago. He hired me to follow Claire because he believed she had evidence against him.""

"Why did he trust you?"" Daniel asked.

"Because I'd worked for him before I met Michael. I handled paperwork for one of his companies.""

My father looked sick.

"You entered my life knowing you were connected to the man stealing from my business?""

"I didn't know he was stealing from you when we first met.""

"But you knew eventually.""

"Yes.""

"And you stayed silent.""

Vanessa nodded.

The admission seemed to cost her more than any argument could have.

She took a shaky breath.

"The night Claire died, Robert called me. He said Claire was going to meet someone and hand over the documents. He wanted me to find out who.""

My father leaned forward.

"Did you follow her?""

"Yes.""

"Did you see her car crash?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I saw the car leave the road. I was driving behind her.""

My hands went cold.

"What happened next?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I stopped. Claire was still alive when I reached her car. She was frightened, but she was conscious.""

"Then why didn't you call an ambulance?"" I demanded.

"I wanted to. I swear I did.""

"Then what stopped you?""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"Robert arrived.""

The room fell silent.

"He told me he would handle everything. He said he had already called for help. He ordered me to leave before anyone saw me there.""

My father stood.

"And you believed him?""

"I was afraid of him.""

"So you left my wife alone in a wrecked car?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I thought someone was coming!""

Eleanor's voice was sharp.

"Did you see Robert touch Claire?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. He went to the driver's side. I was standing near the passenger door. I heard Claire say something, but I couldn't make out the words.""

"What did Robert do?"" Daniel asked.

"He told me to get in my car. When I refused, he threatened to tell Michael about the financial records and the account in Emily's name.""

My father stared at her.

"You were more afraid of losing your place in this family than you were of helping Claire.""

Vanessa couldn't look at him.

"Yes.""

For several seconds, the only sound was her crying.

Then she continued.

"I drove away. A few minutes later, I called Robert. He said the ambulance had arrived and Claire was being taken to the hospital.""

My father gripped the back of a chair.

"The hospital told me she died at the scene.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I found out the next morning.""

"Did you tell the police you were there?""

"No.""

"Did you tell me?""

"No.""

My father stepped away from the table.

He looked as though every memory of his marriage had become contaminated.

Eleanor reached for my hand.

"Emily, we need to be careful. Vanessa's account is important, but we still need the investigators to verify the timeline and determine what happened to Claire.""

I nodded.

For the first time, I understood that the truth wasn't going to arrive as one perfect confession. It would have to be assembled from evidence, records, and the people who had spent years hiding from it.

David contacted the investigators and arranged for Vanessa's statement to be documented properly. They also reviewed the threatening call and began tracing the available records connected to Robert's old businesses.

Meanwhile, Eleanor and my father contacted the community music center where my mother's piano had been donated.

The director agreed to let the investigators examine it.

Two hours later, we stood inside a small music room that smelled of polished wood and old sheet music.

The piano sat beneath a window overlooking the parking lot.

I ran my fingers over the worn keys.

"Mom used to play this for me," I whispered.

My father stood beside me.

"She used to make up songs about everything. Breakfast, laundry, even the weather.""

He smiled faintly.

"She couldn't carry a tune, but she never let that stop her.""

I laughed through my tears.

It was the first genuine laugh I'd managed since the prom disaster.

The investigators examined the piano's rear panel and found a narrow compartment behind the music rack.

Inside lay a sealed envelope and a small flash drive.

Eleanor gasped.

"Claire's handwriting.""

The envelope was addressed to me.

My father let me open it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

My darling Emily,

If you are reading this, someone has finally discovered the truth I was unable to tell you.

I need you to know that the money in your account was never stolen from you. It was placed there to protect you, and the documents hidden with it will prove that someone used your identity without your knowledge.

But the most important truth is this: the man who claims to be your father may not be the man you think he is.

I looked up at Daniel.

He stood perfectly still.

My father took the flash drive to David, who arranged for a qualified digital examiner to make a forensic copy and inspect its contents.

Hours later, the examiner found several scanned financial documents, recorded conversations, and a video file dated three days before my mother's death.

The investigators reviewed the material.

In the video, Claire sat at a desk, her face pale but determined.

"If anything happens to me," she said, looking directly into the camera, "Robert Hale is responsible for the missing funds. But he isn't working alone.""

She paused and glanced toward someone outside the frame.

Then she continued.

"The person helping him has access to Michael's company, my personal records, and Emily's account.""

A voice spoke from off camera.

"Claire, please. You don't understand what you're risking.""

My mother turned toward the sound.

And the camera captured the person's face.

My father stumbled backward.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Eleanor whispered, "No.""

Because the person standing beside my mother wasn't Robert Hale.

It was someone none of us had expected.

Someone who had spent seventeen years pretending to be on our side.

The investigator paused the video.

Then he turned toward my father.

"Michael, do you recognize this man?""

My father nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

May you like

His voice broke.

"That's my brother, Thomas.""
