Chapter 12: The Birth Certificate That Lied

I couldn't move.

The photocopy trembled in my father's hands, its faded lettering barely visible beneath the attic dust still clinging to his sleeves.

A pregnancy.

Two years before I was born.

A name beside it that belonged to the man standing in our living room.

Daniel Brooks.

My possible biological father.

My father's hands shook as he examined the record.

"This could be a clerical error," he said.

"A different patient with the same name.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"It isn't.""

"How do you know?""

"Because Robert gave me the record himself.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You said you never knew anything about Claire's pregnancy.""

"I didn't know until after she died.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was trying to find out whether Emily was your daughter or Daniel's.""

My father looked up sharply.

"She's my daughter.""

"Biologically, we don't know that," David said carefully.

"A photocopy of an old medical record isn't sufficient evidence. We need the original records, if they still exist, and any other reliable documentation.""

I clung to those words.

Reliable documentation.

Facts.

Something more solid than the shifting stories that had controlled my life.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you know my mother was pregnant before she married Dad?""

He shook his head.

"No. Claire and I separated years before I met Eleanor's business partners. I never knew about a pregnancy.""

"Then why did you tell Eleanor you thought I might be your daughter?""

Daniel looked stricken.

"Because Claire sent me a letter seventeen years ago. It arrived after she'd died. She said she had a daughter, but she didn't name the father. She wrote that she'd made mistakes and wanted me to know the truth one day.""

"Where is that letter?""

"I gave it to Eleanor when I began searching for you.""

My father turned toward him.

"And you waited seventeen years?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I was told Claire had wanted nothing to do with me. I thought the letter was a final goodbye. I didn't know she'd died until much later.""

"Who told you that?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Robert Hale.""

My father slammed the document onto the table.

"Robert again! Every road leads back to that man.""

David raised a hand.

"Let's slow down. We have several claims, but we need to verify them independently. Daniel, do you have the original letter?""

"Yes. Eleanor has it in a secure file.""

"Good. We'll arrange to obtain a copy through the proper channels.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What happened to the pregnancy in that record?""

She swallowed.

"I don't know.""

"Was the baby me?""

"I don't know, Emily.""

"Then why are you showing me this?""

"Because Robert told me Claire had given birth to a child before she married Michael. He said the records were changed to protect someone.""

My father stared at her.

"Who changed them?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"He never told me.""

I felt tears slipping down my face.

"My mother would never have let someone change my birth certificate.""

Daniel spoke gently.

"People sometimes make decisions out of fear. It doesn't mean they didn't love their children.""

I turned toward him.

"You don't get to tell me what my mother would do. You weren't there.""

He flinched.

"You're right. I'm sorry.""

The sincerity in his voice made my anger harder to hold.

I wanted him to be a liar. I wanted Vanessa to be lying. I wanted the world to return to a place where my father was my father and my mother had died in an ordinary accident.

But the documents were real enough to demand answers.

David placed the photocopy in a protective folder.

"We'll contact the hospital or its successor organization to determine whether the original record still exists. We'll also request a certified copy of Emily's birth registration and compare the dates.""

My father nodded.

"And the DNA test?""

David looked at me.

"That's your decision, Emily. You're seventeen, so we'll need to consider the applicable consent requirements. We can discuss the appropriate process with the professionals handling the case.""

I took a breath.

"I want to know.""

My father looked at me, pain and love fighting across his face.

"Then we'll find out.""

Vanessa sat down heavily.

"There is one more thing.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Of course there is.""

She looked at me.

"Robert told me the birth records were changed because Claire wanted Michael to believe Emily was his biological daughter.""

My father shook his head.

"Why would Claire do that?""

"Because she was afraid Daniel would take the child.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"I never would have taken a child away from her.""

"Robert didn't believe that," Vanessa replied.

"He said Daniel had powerful connections, and if he discovered the truth, he would fight for custody.""

I stared at Daniel.

"Is that true? Do you have powerful connections?""

He hesitated.

"My family owned property and businesses. But I never threatened Claire. I never tried to take you away from her.""

"Then why did she hide me from you?""

"I don't know.""

For the first time, Daniel looked as lost as I felt.

My father walked to the window and stared outside.

"I raised Emily as my daughter because I loved her mother, and I loved Emily from the moment I held her. Whatever a test says, that will never change.""

I moved beside him.

"I know, Dad.""

He kissed the top of my head.

But the question remained.

Who was I biologically?

And why had someone gone to such lengths to conceal the answer?

David's phone rang.

He listened, asked several questions, and then turned toward us.

"The investigator reviewing the financial records has found something important.""

My father straightened.

"What?""

David looked at Vanessa.

"The account records show that the $250,000 withdrawal was made under a power of attorney that supposedly belonged to Claire.""

Vanessa's face went white.

David continued.

"But the signature on the authorization was witnessed by someone whose name appears on another document in our file.""

He placed a photocopy on the table.

The signature belonged to *Vanessa Hayes*.

My father stared at his wife.

"You signed the withdrawal?""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"I didn't take the money!""

"Did you sign the document?""

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Finally, she whispered, "Yes.""

My father stepped backward.

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at me with desperate eyes.

"Because Robert told me Claire had asked him to protect the money.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I wanted to.""

David collected the documents.

"We'll need the original authorization and the bank's verification records before drawing conclusions. The investigators will handle that.""

Then Vanessa spoke so quietly I almost didn't hear her.

"Robert told me that if I didn't sign, he'd make sure Emily never learned who her real father was.""

The room went silent.

My father stared at her.

"You let a dead man control our family for seventeen years?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"No," she whispered.

"I let a living man control it.""

Daniel froze.

My father slowly turned toward him.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

May you like

Then she said the words that made Daniel drop his briefcase.

"Robert Hale isn't dead.""
