Chapter 10: The Account With My Name on It

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

My name appeared on the final page of my mother's notebook, written in the same familiar handwriting I'd seen on birthday cards and school lunch notes.

If I disappear, look for the account under Emily's name.

I read it again.

Then I looked at my father.

"Why would anyone use my name for a bank account?""

Michael didn't answer immediately. He was staring at Vanessa, whose hands trembled as she watched Madison turn the notebook's pages.

"Vanessa," he said, "did you open an account in Emily's name?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Did Robert Hale?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop saying that!"" My father's voice thundered through the living room.

"For seventeen years, you've told me you don't know whenever the truth becomes inconvenient.""

Vanessa flinched.

"I was trying to protect Madison!""

Madison looked up from the notebook.

"From what, Mom? Knowing what you did?""

Vanessa turned toward her daughter.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then explain it!""

For once, Madison wasn't crying or laughing. She looked furious.

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came.

Daniel carefully took the notebook from Madison.

"Michael, we shouldn't make assumptions. These records need to be examined by a forensic accountant and the authorities.""

My father nodded.

"Agreed.""

He picked up his phone and called his attorney.

Within twenty minutes, David arrived with a briefcase and a grim expression. Dad explained what we'd discovered while David examined the documents.

When he reached the page containing my name, he stopped.

"Michael, you need to understand that this could be serious. If someone used Emily's identity to conceal company funds, she may have been made part of a financial scheme without her knowledge.""

My stomach twisted.

"Could I be arrested?""

David looked directly at me.

"Nothing here establishes that you knowingly did anything wrong. We need to preserve the records and establish who opened the account, who controlled it, and where the money went.""

My father pulled his chair closer to mine.

"Nobody is going to blame Emily for something she didn't do.""

David nodded.

"First, we'll request the bank records and secure copies of everything in this box. No one should alter or destroy anything.""

He photographed each page, placed the originals into protective folders, and made a list of the documents that needed further verification.

Vanessa sat silently on the couch.

For the first time in my life, she seemed to understand that she couldn't talk her way out of everything.

Then David picked up an envelope from the bottom of the box.

It was addressed to my mother.

The return address belonged to a bank in downtown Atlanta.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a statement showing a series of deposits made over several years. The account holder was listed as Emily Claire Hayes.

My full name.

The first deposit had been made when I was three months old.

The most recent transaction was dated three weeks before my mother's death.

I stared at the numbers.

The balance was more money than I'd ever imagined seeing in my entire life.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

My father leaned over the statement.

"Emily, did your mother ever tell you she had an account for you?""

"No.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Who had access to it?""

David examined the paperwork.

"The account appears to have been opened by a guardian. The signature is difficult to authenticate from this copy, but the authorized representative is listed as Claire Hayes.""

My father exhaled.

"So Claire opened it.""

"Possibly," David said.

"But we need the bank's original records.""

Daniel studied the transaction dates.

"Look at the withdrawals.""

Several large sums had been removed shortly before my mother's death.

One withdrawal stood out.

It had been made the day before the accident.

The amount was $250,000.

My father stared at the page.

"Who withdrew a quarter of a million dollars from an account belonging to my infant daughter?""

David pointed to the transaction code.

"There's a note indicating that the withdrawal was authorized in person. The bank should have identification records, signatures, and possibly archived surveillance, depending on its retention policies.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"I need some air.""

My father didn't look at her.

"Sit down.""

She remained standing.

"You can't keep treating me like a criminal.""

David closed the folder.

"Then you should have no objection to cooperating with the investigation.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

"You don't know anything about what happened!""

"Then tell us.""

She looked around the room, searching for someone who might defend her.

Madison lowered her eyes.

Daniel remained silent.

And my father didn't move.

Vanessa slowly sat down.

Finally, she spoke.

"Robert told me the money was being moved temporarily. He said Claire had misunderstood the transactions. He promised the funds would be returned before anyone noticed.""

"Did you withdraw the $250,000?"" my father asked.

"No.""

"Do you know who did?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Your mother did.""

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

"No. Mom wouldn't steal from me.""

"She didn't steal it," Vanessa replied quickly.

"She discovered the money had already been moved. She withdrew what remained because she wanted to protect it.""

My father stared at her.

"Then where is it?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"I don't know.""

David gathered the paperwork.

"We'll find out through the bank.""

He stood to leave, but before he reached the door, Vanessa spoke again.

"There's something else.""

Everyone turned.

She looked at the notebook in Daniel's hands.

"Claire didn't open that account just to save money for Emily.""

My father frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"She opened it because she was preparing to leave.""

"Leave where?""

"Atlanta. Your marriage. Everything.""

I felt the room spin.

My mother had been planning to leave my father?

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense. Claire loved Michael.""

"She did," Vanessa replied.

"But she was afraid someone would hurt Emily if she stayed.""

My father stood so quickly his chair toppled backward.

"Who would hurt my daughter?""

Vanessa looked at the account statement.

Then she whispered the words that silenced us all.

"Robert Hale wasn't the person Claire was most afraid of.""

She looked toward the front window.

"She was afraid of the man who helped him disappear.""

At that exact moment, David's phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, then slowly lowered it.

"Michael," he said, "we have a problem.""

My father stared at him.

"What now?""

David looked at me.

"Someone has already accessed Emily's account this morning.""

May you like

And the name on the withdrawal authorization wasn't Vanessa's.

It was Michael Hayes.
