Chapter 9: The Secret Behind My Father's Name

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the ringing in my ears.

Richard wasn't my biological father.

The man who had raised me, signed my school forms, attended my birthdays, and watched Vanessa destroy my mother's dress wasn't my father?

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at me.

“Emily?”” she whispered.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did Eleanor say?””

I couldn't find my voice.

He took the phone from my hand.

“What report?””

Eleanor explained everything again.

The original trust file contained a sealed paternity report dated shortly after my birth. It had been commissioned by my mother, Claire.

The report identified another man as my biological father.

And Richard had known.

I sank into the chair.

Lily knelt beside me.

“Hey. Look at me.””

I forced myself to meet her eyes.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No. I swear.””

I wanted to believe her.

I did believe her.

But the world I had known was disappearing one secret at a time.

Daniel ended the call.

“Eleanor wants us back in Charleston. The attorney is waiting.””

I stared at the pendant in Lily's hand.

“Why would Mom hide something like this?””

Lily carefully unfolded the paper again.

“Maybe she didn't hide it. Maybe she was protecting us.””

I looked at her.

“From who?””

She didn't answer.

We drove back to Charleston that afternoon.

Lily came with us.

She had closed her shop for the day, leaving a note on the door that said she would return tomorrow.

During the drive, she told us about her childhood.

Margaret had been strict but affectionate. She had taught Lily to sew when she was six and encouraged her to study fashion at a local college.

“She always said my hands reminded her of someone,” Lily explained.

“I didn't understand until I found the old photographs.””

Daniel smiled.

“Mom used to say the same thing about Emily.””

Lily looked at me.

“Do you sew?””

I nodded.

“I made a dress for a competition.””

“Did you win?””

“I haven't found out yet.””

She laughed softly.

“Then we'd better hope you did.””

For a few minutes, we were simply three siblings driving through South Carolina.

It felt strangely natural.

When we reached the house, Eleanor was waiting in the old studio with a man in a navy suit.

“This is Thomas Reed,” she said.

“He's an estate attorney. He's been reviewing Claire's original documents.””

Thomas shook our hands.

“I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.””

I placed my mother's pendant on the table.

“Show me the report.””

He opened a folder.

The document was yellowed around the edges, but the print was still clear.

*Paternity Analysis — Subject: Emily Claire Carter.*

The alleged father was Richard Carter.

The result was negative.

I stared at the page.

“Was Dad tested?””

Thomas nodded.

“The report indicates that both parties provided samples.””

“Then he knew.””

“Yes.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“How long has he known?””

Thomas turned to another page.

“According to the date, since you were eleven months old.””

Lily covered her mouth.

Daniel looked furious.

“Why would he raise her for twenty-three years if he knew she wasn't his?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Because the trust agreement gave Richard financial control over Emily's inheritance until she reached adulthood. He was also named guardian in Claire's will.””

Eleanor leaned forward.

“Who was the biological father?””

Thomas turned the page.

A name appeared.

*Jonathan Hayes.*

Lily frowned.

“Hayes?””

I looked at her.

“That's your surname.””

She nodded slowly.

“Margaret never told me my biological father's name.””

Thomas explained that Jonathan Hayes had been a business partner of Claire's father. He had met Claire years before she married Richard.

He had died in a car accident when I was a baby.

But there was something else.

“Jonathan left behind a substantial estate,” Thomas said.

“His will named his biological child as the primary beneficiary.””

I stared at him.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned over the table.

“How much?””

Thomas opened another document.

“Approximately $3.8 million, excluding property interests and royalties.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Then why did I grow up believing we were struggling?””

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

She answered.

“Because the money was never transferred to you.””

I turned to the attorney.

“Who controlled it?””

He placed another document on the table.

Richard Carter.

My father had been appointed temporary administrator of Jonathan's estate after the accident.

I looked at the signature.

It was the same one I'd seen on the trust transfers.

“Did he take that money too?””

Thomas nodded.

“Some funds were transferred into accounts associated with Carter Development. Others were used to purchase properties under Vanessa's company.””

Daniel pushed his chair back.

“That's not just theft from Mom's trust. That's theft from Emily.””

Thomas corrected him carefully.

“Potentially. We still need a complete forensic accounting, but the documents raise serious questions.””

I looked at the paternity report again.

“Why did Mom never tell me?””

Eleanor sat beside me.

“Claire was preparing to tell you. She asked me to help arrange a meeting with Jonathan's family. But she became too sick.””

“Did she know Richard was stealing the inheritance?””

Eleanor nodded.

“She discovered the transfers. That's why she began preserving evidence.””

Lily opened her hand.

The little gold pendant lay across her palm.

“Maybe the letter explains everything.””

We carefully examined the pendant again.

There was another tiny compartment beneath the first one.

This time, a micro-SD card slid out.

Daniel found an old adapter in the studio's desk drawer and inserted it into his laptop.

A video file appeared.

The date was two months before Mom died.

I pressed play.

My mother's face filled the screen.

She looked thinner than I remembered. A scarf covered her hair, and she was sitting in front of her old sewing machine.

But her eyes were bright.

“Emily. Lily. If you're watching this together, then somehow, despite everything, you've found each other.””

I started crying.

Mom smiled gently.

“I wish I could be there to see you both. I wish I could hold your hands and tell you how much I love you.””

She paused.

Then her expression changed.

“There's something about your father you need to understand. Richard is not the man who fathered Emily. But that's not the worst thing he did.””

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

My mother took a breath.

“Before I became ill, I discovered that Richard had been working with someone to transfer Jonathan's estate. Someone who had access to every document, every account, and every legal instruction.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“And that person wasn't Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

Mom leaned closer.

“It was someone in my own family.””

The video suddenly flickered.

Then a woman's voice came from behind the camera.

“Claire, you need to stop recording.””

My mother's face changed.

She looked toward the door.

“Not until they know.””

A shadow moved across the wall.

Then Mom whispered the name.

“Margaret.””

The screen went black.

Lily slowly stood.

“Margaret?””

I stared at her.

“But Margaret raised you.””

She shook her head.

“She told me she was protecting me.””

Daniel closed the laptop.

“No. She was hiding something.””

Then the computer chimed.

A new file had appeared.

It was titled:

*THE NIGHT CLAIRE DIED.*

And beneath it was a timestamp.

The recording had been created three days after my mother passed away.

I looked at Lily.

She looked at me.

Neither of us was ready for what we were about to hear.

But I knew one thing.

May you like

My mother's death had never been the end of the story.

It had been the beginning of the cover-up.
