Chapter 7: The Woman Who Stole My Sister
“I wasn't just there, Emily. I was the reason your mother never got to bring Lily home.””
Vanessa's confession seemed to suck every bit of air from the hidden room.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She shook her head and reached for the back of a chair.
“It's not what you think.””
Daniel let out a bitter laugh.
“That's funny. You've been saying that all night, and somehow everything keeps getting worse.””
My father stepped forward.
“Vanessa, don't say another word.””
She turned on him.
“Oh, now you want me to be quiet?””
“Not here.””
“Where, Richard? In another locked room? Behind another false document?””
Eleanor placed the photograph on the table.
“Let's start with the hospital. Why were you there when Lily was born?””
Vanessa looked at the picture.
For a moment, her expression changed. The arrogance disappeared, replaced by something that looked almost like fear.
“I was twenty-one,” she began.
“Margaret was my aunt. She couldn't have children, and she was desperate to adopt.””
“And Claire?”” I asked.
“Claire was young. She had no husband, no money, and a family that considered an unmarried pregnancy shameful.””
“That doesn't explain you.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I helped Margaret with the paperwork.””
I stepped closer.
“What paperwork?””
“The adoption consent forms.””
Daniel slammed his fist against the table.
“Mom never agreed to a permanent adoption!””
Vanessa flinched.
“She signed them.””
“She told Eleanor she was pressured!””
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Claire told me she believed she was signing temporary guardianship papers. She wanted Margaret to care for Lily while she recovered and got her life together.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“She knew what she was signing.””
“Then why did Mom spend years searching for her?”” I demanded.
“Because she regretted it.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You made sure she couldn't get her daughter back.””
Vanessa looked toward my father.
He said nothing.
And that silence told me this was much bigger than a family disagreement.
Eleanor opened her folder and removed another document.
“This is a copy of the original placement agreement. Margaret's signature is here. Claire's signature is here. But the witness signature…”
She turned the paper around.
Vanessa Carter.
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
“You witnessed the document?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Margaret asked me to.””
“Were you paid?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“Don't be ridiculous.””
Eleanor pointed to a line near the bottom.
“Then perhaps you can explain the payment made to your account three days after the adoption was finalized.””
Vanessa went silent.
My father closed his eyes.
I looked between them.
“Dad, did you know?””
He didn't answer quickly enough.
“Did you know Vanessa helped keep Lily away from Mom?””
“I found out later.””
“When?””
“After we got married.””
I felt sick.
“So you married someone who had helped separate Mom from her first child?””
“Emily, it wasn't that simple.””
“It's never simple when you want to avoid telling the truth, is it?””
Daniel picked up the adoption agreement.
“There's a date here.””
He checked the photograph again.
“It's the same date as the hospital picture.””
Then he noticed something else.
A second signature appeared beneath Vanessa's.
Richard Carter.
My father had signed a document connected to Lily's adoption, even though he wasn't part of Claire's family at the time.
I turned toward him.
“You were involved before you even married Mom?””
He looked defeated.
“I was helping Claire resolve a difficult situation.””
“You weren't even her husband!””
“I was her lawyer at the time.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
Dad rubbed his face.
“I worked on several estate and property matters for Claire before we became involved romantically. Margaret asked me to review the adoption documents.””
Eleanor stared at him.
“You represented Claire?””
“Yes.””
“And you approved a permanent adoption without explaining the terms to her?””
“I didn't approve anything. I reviewed the paperwork.””
“Then why is your signature on the witness statement?””
He looked away.
Nobody spoke.
I picked up the photograph of Lily.
I had spent twenty-three years believing my family was broken because death had taken my mother.
Now I was discovering that people had deliberately broken it while she was still alive.
Vanessa reached for her handbag.
“I am leaving.””
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“Not until you tell us where Lily is.””
“I don't know.””
“There's an address on the photograph.””
“That address is old.””
I unfolded the photograph again.
A handwritten note was tucked behind it.
Lily Hayes — Savannah, Georgia.
And beneath the address was a phone number.
I pulled out my phone.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my wrist.
“Don't call her.””
I stared at her hand.
“Why?””
“Because you don't know what you're bringing into this family.””
I slowly removed her fingers.
“She is my family.””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“She doesn't know the truth about Margaret. She doesn't know what happened after the adoption. And if you contact her, she'll ask questions none of us can answer.””
“Then perhaps it's time someone did.””
I dialed the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a woman's voice answered.
“Hello?””
I couldn't speak.
“Hello? Who is this?””
My lips trembled.
“My name is Emily Carter.””
There was silence.
Then I heard a sharp breath.
“Emily?””
My heart nearly stopped.
“You know my name?””
The woman began crying.
“I've been waiting for this call for twenty-three years.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She had tears in her eyes.
Then the woman on the phone whispered:
“Emily, before you come looking for me, there's something you need to know about your mother.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
“She didn't die believing I was gone.””
May you like
A pause.
“She died knowing exactly where I was.””
