Chapter 8: My Sister's Side of the Story

I couldn't move.

The phone was pressed against my ear, and the woman's voice seemed to come from somewhere far away.

“She knew where you were?”” I whispered.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't she come to get you?””

The woman breathed shakily.

“Because she was told that if she tried, I would disappear again.””

I looked at my father.

He had gone completely still.

“Who told her that?””

The woman hesitated.

“Margaret. And someone who was supposed to protect her.””

I closed my eyes.

“Was that my father?””

There was a long silence.

Then she answered.

“I think you should come to Savannah.””

“Please. Just tell me your name.””

“Lily.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Daniel put a hand on my shoulder.

“Are you okay?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

For once, nobody told me to calm down.

Eleanor collected the documents and placed them in her folder.

“We need to preserve all of this. Don't let anyone remove anything from this room.””

My father looked up.

“You can't take these documents.””

Eleanor met his gaze.

“They belong to the estate, Richard. Not to you.””

Vanessa stood near the staircase, her arms wrapped around herself.

“You're all making a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“You've had years to tell the truth. You don't get to decide when we're finished.””

Daniel took photographs of every document and box. Eleanor called an attorney she trusted, explaining that she needed immediate assistance with a potentially fraudulent estate transfer.

My father sat on the bottom step.

He looked older than I had ever seen him.

But I wasn't ready to feel sorry for him.

Not yet.

The next morning, Daniel and I drove to Savannah.

Eleanor stayed behind to arrange an independent review of the trust records and secure the studio.

The address led us to a narrow street lined with brick buildings and enormous oak trees. A small alterations shop stood between a bakery and a bookstore.

A faded sign above the window read:

*LILY HAYES — CUSTOM SEWING AND ALTERATIONS.*

I stared at it.

“She sews,” I whispered.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Like Mom.””

I pushed open the door.

A little bell rang.

The shop smelled of steam, fabric, and lavender.

A young woman stood behind the counter, pinning a sleeve on a customer's jacket.

She looked up.

And the world stopped.

It was the woman from the photograph.

My eyes.

My mother's mouth.

Even the little crease between her eyebrows.

She dismissed the customer gently and walked toward us.

“Emily?””

I nodded.

She covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Neither of us knew what to do.

Then she stepped forward and hugged me.

I froze for half a second before wrapping my arms around her.

She smelled like lavender detergent and fresh cotton.

Something about that scent reminded me of Mom's old studio.

We stood there crying.

Daniel joined us, and Lily laughed through her tears.

“You must be Daniel.””

He nodded.

“I'm your brother.””

She looked at him.

“I've seen pictures of you.””

“Where?””

“Margaret kept a box of photographs. She told me about Claire's other child. She never told me your names until I was older.””

I pulled back.

“Margaret raised you?””

Lily nodded.

“She loved me. I won't pretend she didn't. But she also lied to me about where I came from.””

She led us into a small office behind the shop.

There were framed photographs on the wall. Lily as a child, Lily graduating, Lily standing beside an older woman with silver hair.

Margaret.

“She died two years ago,” Lily said.

“I'm sorry.””

“She left me a letter. I didn't open it until last month.””

Lily reached into a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

“Margaret said my birth mother wanted to find me, but that there were legal complications.””

I looked at her.

“Did she mention Vanessa?””

Lily's face changed.

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

Lily unfolded the letter.

“Margaret wrote that Vanessa visited her several times after the adoption. She said Vanessa was worried Claire might challenge the agreement.””

“Worried about what?”” I asked.

Lily looked at the next paragraph.

“Money.””

My stomach tightened.

She continued reading.

“Apparently, Claire had inherited a significant amount of property from her parents. The adoption agreement was supposed to include a financial provision for me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What provision?””

Lily pulled another document from the envelope.

It was a trust certificate.

My mother's name appeared at the top.

Beneath it were two beneficiaries.

Emily Carter.

Lily Hayes.

I felt tears sting my eyes.

“She remembered you,” I whispered.

Lily nodded.

“She made sure I had something, even when I didn't know she was my mother.””

Then Lily showed us the final page.

It was a letter from Margaret, written shortly before her death.

Lily,

There is one thing I never told you. Claire came to see you when you were seven. She stood outside your school for nearly an hour.

She wanted to speak to you.

But someone threatened to expose a secret about your birth if she approached you.

I looked up.

“What secret?””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't know. Margaret never explained.””

She turned the page over.

A name was written at the bottom.

*Vanessa Carter.*

I sat back.

Daniel stood.

“She's been involved in everything.””

Lily nodded.

“But there's more.””

She opened a small velvet pouch and removed a gold pendant.

It was shaped like a tiny flower.

I gasped.

My mother had worn the same pendant in almost every photograph I remembered.

“Where did you get that?””

“Margaret gave it to me before she died. She said it belonged to my birth mother.””

I reached for it.

On the back were two engraved initials.

C.C.

And a date.

Lily turned it over again.

“There's a hidden compartment.””

She pressed a tiny clasp.

A folded piece of paper slid out.

Inside was a single sentence in my mother's handwriting.

If my daughters ever find each other, tell them the truth about their father.

I looked at Lily.

She looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

It was Eleanor.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to get Emily away from there.””

My brother stood straighter.

“What happened?””

“Richard has filed an emergency petition to take control of Claire's estate. And Vanessa has just made a statement claiming the documents found in the studio are stolen.””

I grabbed the phone.

“What?””

Eleanor lowered her voice.

“There's something else. The attorney found a document in the original trust file.””

“What document?””

“A paternity report.””

My fingers went numb.

May you like

Eleanor continued.

“Emily, according to the report, Richard Carter is not your biological father.””
