Chapter 12: The Night My Father Became a Stranger

Eleanor sat down so suddenly that her chair scraped against the concrete floor.

“No,” she whispered.

Daniel paused the video.

“Ms. Hayes?””

She shook her head.

“Margaret couldn't have done that.””

Lily stared at her.

“You're her sister?””

Eleanor covered her face.

“Yes.””

“You knew me?””

“I knew you existed. I didn't know Margaret had raised you.””

Lily stepped away.

“You're telling me my adoptive mother was your sister, my biological father was your brother, and nobody thought I deserved to know?””

Eleanor began crying.

“I didn't know the full truth.””

“That's what everyone says!””

Lily stormed toward the staircase.

I followed her.

“Lily, wait.””

She turned.

“Do you know what it's like to discover your entire childhood was built around people hiding your name?””

I couldn't answer.

She wiped her eyes.

“Margaret told me my birth mother had died without ever asking about me. She said I was lucky she wanted me.””

I stepped closer.

“She was wrong.””

“She also told me I should never look for my biological family because they were dangerous.””

I thought about Jonathan's recording.

Perhaps Margaret had known exactly what happened to him.

Perhaps she had helped make it happen.

I took Lily's hand.

“We're going to find out.””

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

When we returned to the room, Eleanor had resumed the video.

Jonathan was speaking about his final meeting with Margaret.

“She came to my office two days before the accident. She said Claire was planning to challenge the adoption and reclaim Lily. She asked me to persuade Claire to stop.””

He paused.

“I refused.””

A document appeared on the screen.

It was a copy of a bank transfer.

The amount was $150,000.

The recipient was Margaret Hayes.

The sender was Carter Development.

Daniel leaned closer.

“There's the payment.””

Jonathan continued.

“I later discovered Richard had been moving money from Claire's trust through several companies. Margaret was receiving payments for maintaining the adoption arrangement and preventing Claire from contacting Lily.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And the accident?”” I whispered.

Jonathan looked directly into the camera.

“I found evidence that the brakes on my car had been tampered with. I gave the evidence to someone I trusted.””

The video froze.

Then a final line appeared.

*WITNESS: MARGARET HAYES.*

Eleanor began shaking.

“My sister told me Jonathan died because he was driving too fast.””

Lily looked at her.

“Maybe she wanted you to believe that.””

Eleanor slowly nodded.

“Maybe.””

Daniel opened the remaining files.

There were photographs of the accident scene, insurance records, and an old police report.

One photograph showed Jonathan's car resting against a tree.

Another showed a woman standing near the wreckage.

Her face was partially hidden.

But the coat was unmistakable.

Vanessa's.

I leaned toward the screen.

“That's her.””

Daniel enlarged the image.

The woman was holding a small handbag with a distinctive silver clasp.

I had seen it countless times.

Vanessa still owned the same handbag.

My father appeared in the doorway.

Nobody had heard him arrive.

“What are you doing?””

I turned.

“Watching the truth.””

His gaze moved to the laptop.

Then to the photograph.

His face changed.

“Turn that off.””

Daniel stood.

“No.””

Richard entered the room and reached for the laptop.

I stepped between them.

“Did you know Jonathan was going to die?””

He stopped.

“Emily, move.””

“Did you know?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn't kill anyone.””

The words came too quickly.

Eleanor stood.

“Richard, the recording establishes that you were involved in moving money from Claire's trust and Jonathan's estate. It also places Margaret and Vanessa at the center of the adoption fraud.””

“Those are allegations.””

“Then explain the payments.””

He looked at the documents.

Then at Lily.

Something like recognition passed across his face.

“You shouldn't have come back.””

Lily stared at him.

“You knew who I was?””

He said nothing.

“My whole life, you knew?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Margaret was supposed to keep you away from this family.””

Lily's voice broke.

“Why?””

“Because Claire was going to destroy everything.””

I stepped forward.

“She was trying to bring her daughters together!””

“She was going to expose the estate transfers, the adoption arrangement, and the fact that Jonathan had left money to a child who wasn't legally recognized.””

I stared at him.

“So you let her believe she had no way to get Lily back?””

“I was trying to protect what we'd built.””

“What did you build, Dad? A house full of lies?””

He looked at me.

“I raised you.””

I felt tears slide down my cheeks.

“Yes. You did.””

For one second, his expression softened.

Then I continued.

“But you also stole from me, hid my sister, and let me believe my mother had simply given up.””

He lowered his eyes.

I reached into my bag and removed the photograph of my ruined gown.

The red flowers were visible across the silk.

“Do you know what Vanessa said when she destroyed this?””

He didn't answer.

“She said my mother's sewing dreams were worthless.””

Richard looked at the dress.

“Emily—”

“She was wrong. Mom left us something worth more than all your money.””

Lily took my hand.

“And she left us each other.””

My father looked between us.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that neither of us was going to leave quietly.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

It was Thomas Reed.

Daniel answered and put him on speaker.

“What's happening?””

Thomas sounded breathless.

“I've just received an urgent notice from the probate court. Richard has filed a petition to freeze the estate and challenge the authenticity of the documents.””

Eleanor frowned.

“On what grounds?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Fraudulent recordings and forged signatures.””

I looked at my father.

“You're still denying everything?””

He didn't respond.

Thomas continued.

“There's something else. The petition includes a sworn statement from a witness claiming Claire signed a new will three days before she died.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who witnessed it?””

Thomas read the name.

“Margaret Hayes.””

Lily went pale.

“Margaret was dead two years ago.””

“Exactly,” Thomas replied.

The room fell silent.

Then he added:

“Someone submitted a document using her name, claiming to have witnessed Claire's final will.””

I looked at Richard.

His expression had changed again.

He wasn't surprised.

He was calculating.

And that frightened me more than his anger.

Because if Margaret was supposedly dead, someone had either forged her signature or used her identity to rewrite my mother's final wishes.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“Who benefits from this new will?””

Thomas answered immediately.

“Richard Carter.””

I felt the last piece of my childhood disappear.

My father reached for the staircase.

“Where are you going?”” I asked.

He stopped.

“Home.””

“No. You're staying here until we get answers.””

He turned slowly.

“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””

I looked at the two people standing beside me.

My sister.

My brother.

Then I looked at my mother's old sewing machine.

“Yes,” I said.

“For the first time, I think I do.””

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message.

Emily, this is Margaret. I'm alive. And I can prove Richard didn't act alone.

A second message appeared.

Meet me tomorrow. Come without Eleanor.

I stared at the screen.

Then a final message arrived.

And whatever you do, don't trust your sister.

I slowly raised my eyes toward Lily.

May you like

She was already looking at my phone.

Her face had gone completely white.
