Chapter 7: The Recording She Left Behind

Nobody moved.

The house that had always felt familiar suddenly felt like a place filled with hidden doors.

Dad stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Brenda stood in the living room.

And I stood upstairs holding my mother’s letter with shaking hands.

“You came back,” Dad said.

Brenda looked around the room.

“I knew you would find the box eventually.””

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“You searched through it.””

She didn’t deny it.

“I needed to know what Elena left behind.””

My heart pounded.

“You knew about the box?””

Brenda looked at me.

For a second, something almost like regret crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

“Nia, you have no idea what your mother was like.””

My hands tightened around the letter.

“Don’t talk about her like you knew her.””

Brenda laughed softly.

“I knew her better than you think.””

Dad stepped forward.

“You have five seconds to explain why you were hiding my wife’s things.””

Brenda ignored him.

She looked at the small recording device sitting on the table upstairs.

“That thing is the reason everything fell apart.””

Claire moved closer to Dad.

“Why are you afraid of it?””

Brenda’s expression changed.

“You should leave.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Brenda looked annoyed.

“You don’t belong here.””

Claire’s voice became cold.

“I belonged in Elena’s life long before you did.””

Dad looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Nobody answered.

So I walked downstairs.

Holding my mother’s letter.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I think we need to listen.””

His eyes softened.

“You’re sure?””

I nodded.

“No more secrets.””

For once, nobody argued.

Dad picked up the recorder.

The old device looked like it had been untouched for years.

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My mother’s voice.

I froze.

I had forgotten how she sounded.

The warmth.

The softness.

The way she said my name.

“Nia, if you’re hearing this, then I’m not there to explain everything myself.””

My eyes filled instantly.

Dad covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“I need you to know that I loved you. Every single day I had with you was a gift.””

I closed my eyes.

Then my mother’s voice changed.

More serious.

“But there is something I discovered. Something that put our family in danger.””

Dad looked at Brenda.

She looked away.

“Elena,” Claire whispered.

The recording continued.

“I found evidence that money was being taken from our accounts. At first, I thought it was a mistake.””

A pause.

“Then I found out it wasn’t.””

Dad’s face became pale.

My mother continued.

“I confronted Brenda.””

The room went silent.

Brenda finally spoke.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

“Turn it off!””

Dad held the recorder tighter.

My mother’s voice continued.

“She denied everything. But when I told her I would go to Andre with the proof, she became angry.””

Brenda stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Dad blocked her.

“No.””

My mother’s voice shook slightly.

“She told me I didn’t understand what I was risking.””

The recording stopped for a second.

Then:

“She said if Andre found out, I would lose everything.””

My heart raced.

Dad looked at Brenda.

“What did you do?””

Brenda stared at him.

“I didn’t kill her.””

The words came out too quickly.

Nobody had accused her.

The silence afterward was terrifying.

Dad’s face changed.

“Why would you say that?””

Brenda froze.

She had revealed more than she meant to.

Claire whispered:

“Because she knows what happened.””

Brenda backed away.

“You’re all twisting this.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Where were you the night Elena died?””

“I told you.””

“Tell me again.””

Brenda looked angry.

“I was home.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

Dad stared at her.

Then he looked at the recorder.

Because suddenly, we all understood.

The recording wasn’t finished.

There was more.

My mother had left another message.

One hidden after the first.

Dad pressed the button again.

Static.

Then my mother’s voice returned.

“Nia, if something happens to me, I need you to remember this…”

A pause.

“Your father is innocent.””

Everyone looked at Dad.

Then my mother said the words that shattered everything.

“But someone may try to make him believe he is responsible.””

Dad stepped back.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“I know Andre would blame himself. That’s who he is. He carries pain that isn’t his.””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

Then the recording ended.

No explanation.

No answer.

Just silence.

Brenda looked at Dad.

And for the first time, she looked scared.

Because my mother’s final words had created a new mystery.

Not what happened to her.

But who had spent eight years making my father believe it was his fault.
