Chapter 13: The Letter That Changed Everything

I couldn’t open the envelope.

Not because I was afraid of what was inside.

Because I was afraid of what it would do to the last piece of my family I still trusted.

Dad stood several feet away from me.

For the first time, he looked like a stranger.

Not because he had changed.

Because suddenly, I realized I didn’t know everything about him.

“Open it,” Marcus said quietly.

Dad looked at him.

“You don’t get to tell her what to do.””

Marcus nodded.

“You’re right.””

Then he looked at me.

“But Elena wanted Nia to know the truth.””

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

I looked at Dad.

He didn’t tell me to open it.

He didn’t tell me not to.

He just stood there.

Waiting.

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

My mother’s handwriting.

The first sentence made my heart ache.

*Nia, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the secrets surrounding our family.*

I swallowed.

I continued.

*Before you hear anything else, I need you to know this: Andre loves you.*

I looked up.

Dad’s eyes were fixed on the letter.

My mother continued:

*He is not your biological father, but he is your father in every way that matters.*

A tear slipped down my cheek.

I kept reading.

*When I discovered I was pregnant, I was scared. Marcus and I had ended our relationship before I found out. I was young, confused, and afraid of hurting everyone.*

My hands shook.

So it was true.

Marcus was my biological father.

But then I reached the next part.

*Andre found out before we married.*

I stopped.

“What?””

Dad closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

My voice broke.

“You knew?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The pain in his face was unbearable.

“But I didn’t care.””

I stared at him.

“How could you not tell me?””

“Because you were my daughter.””

“That’s not an answer.””

His eyes filled.

“You were ten years old when your mother died. Then you lost your home, your mother, your whole world.””

He stepped closer.

“I couldn’t take another thing away from you.””

I looked back at the letter.

My mother’s words continued.

*Andre chose me. He chose Nia. He chose our family. That is why I trusted him more than anyone.*

My heart hurt.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*But someone else knew the truth. Brenda discovered the records and used them to threaten me. She said if I exposed her financial crimes, she would tell Andre that Marcus was Nia’s father and destroy everything we built.*

I looked at Marcus.

His face was full of regret.

My mother continued:

*I was planning to tell Andre everything. Not because I wanted to leave him, but because he deserved the truth.*

The final line was the one that broke me.

*The only person I was afraid of was not the man who shared my blood. It was the person who knew the truth and used it as a weapon.*

I lowered the letter.

Dad walked toward me.

“Nia…”

I stepped back.

Not because I hated him.

Because I was overwhelmed.

“You let me believe you didn’t know.””

“I wanted to protect you.””

“But you lied.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

That honesty hurt.

Because I wanted him to defend himself.

I wanted him to say there was some excuse.

But he didn’t.

“I made a mistake.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought keeping the truth from you was love.””

I wiped my tears.

“And was it?””

Dad looked at me.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“It was fear.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus quietly said:

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

A small flash drive.

“Brenda wasn’t just hiding your mother’s secret.””

Dad frowned.

“What else?””

May you like

Marcus looked serious.

“She was hiding what happened the night Elena died.””
