Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Secret

The warehouse suddenly felt smaller.

Every sound disappeared except my heartbeat.

Dad released Marcus’s arm.

“What did you say?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I hated those words.

People always said sorry right before they changed your entire life.

“Who is my father?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at Dad.

Then at me.

“Your mother wanted to tell you herself.””

Dad stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was shaking.

“You don’t get to stand here after eight years and reveal this like it’s nothing.””

Marcus looked down.

“You’re right.””

“Then explain.””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Elena was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I frowned.

“Why would she lose me?””

Marcus looked at Dad.

“Because she knew the truth would destroy everything.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“What truth?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Nia’s biological father is someone you know.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Dad went completely still.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was unbearable.

Then he said:

“Me.””

The world stopped.

I stared at him.

No.

That couldn’t be real.

Dad looked like he had been punched.

“You?””

Marcus nodded.

“I didn’t know at first.””

Dad laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You were my friend.””

“I know.””

“You stood beside me at my wedding.””

“I know.””

“You held my daughter when she was born.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

Everything felt unreal.

The man who had been part of my father’s life.

The man my mother trusted.

The man connected to Brenda.

“You knew all these years?””

Marcus looked at me.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I found out after Elena died.””

Dad stared.

“How?””

Marcus reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folded document.

“A DNA test.””

My hands went cold.

Dad didn’t take it.

Neither did I.

Because somehow, seeing the proof would make it real.

Marcus continued.

“Elena discovered it before the accident.””

Dad whispered:

“And she didn’t tell me?””

“She was going to.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because she found out Brenda was involved.””

The air changed.

I looked at him.

“What does Brenda have to do with this?””

Marcus’s face became serious.

“Everything.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked around the empty warehouse.

“She knew Elena discovered the truth.””

“How?””

“Because Brenda was the one who found the old records.””

My heart raced.

“She knew Nia wasn’t yours.””

Marcus nodded.

“And she used that information to control everyone.””

Dad’s hands shook.

“She threatened Elena.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Brenda wanted access to your family’s money.””

I felt sick.

Dad looked away.

All these years.

All those lies.

All that pain.

For money.

Then Marcus said something that changed everything again.

“But Brenda wasn’t the only one hiding something.””

Dad looked at him.

“What now?””

Marcus pulled out another envelope.

This one was old.

Damaged.

And addressed to me.

“Nia, your mother left this with me.””

I took it slowly.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Dad.

“Because Elena wrote that if anything happened to her, the first person you should not trust…”

He paused.

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Was your father.””

I looked at Dad.

And for the first time in my life…

May you like

I wondered if the person who had always protected me…

was also the person my mother had been afraid of.
