Chapter 14: The Night Everything Broke

The flash drive sat on the table between us.
A tiny piece of plastic holding eight years of unanswered questions.
Dad stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
Marcus looked down.
“Elena gave it to me.””
“When?””
“The night she died.””
The room went silent.
Dad’s expression changed.
“You saw her?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
My heart raced.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Because I was scared.””
Dad stepped forward.
“You let me believe my wife died without knowing the truth.””
“I know.””
“You let me blame myself.””
“I know.””
Dad’s anger filled the room.
But Marcus didn’t fight back.
Because he knew he deserved it.
“Play the drive,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I held the flash drive.
“We need the truth.””
Dad nodded.
We found an old laptop in the warehouse office.
Marcus plugged it in.
A single video file appeared.
The date was eight years old.
My mother’s face appeared on the screen.
I forgot how much I missed her.
She looked tired.
But determined.
“Marcus, if you’re watching this, then something happened.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
My mother continued.
“I need you to take care of Nia.””
I looked at Dad.
He watched silently.
“Elena…”
Her voice continued.
“I found out Brenda has been stealing money from our accounts.””
The same truth.
But then she said something new.
“She also knows about Nia.””
My breath caught.
“She threatened to tell Andre everything unless I stopped investigating.””
Dad’s hands curled into fists.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“But Brenda doesn’t understand something.””
She paused.
“Andre already knows.””
Dad closed his eyes.
The video continued.
“He knew before we married. He chose us anyway.””
A tear moved down my father’s face.
My mother smiled sadly.
“That is why Brenda’s threat won’t work.””
Then her expression changed.
“She has something else planned.””
The video became shaky.
My mother looked toward the door.
“She knows I’m recording this.””
A noise sounded in the background.
A voice.
A woman’s voice.
Brenda.
My blood went cold.
“Elena?””
My mother turned.
The recording shook.
Then Brenda appeared briefly in the doorway.
“You should have stopped asking questions.””
Dad stood frozen.
My mother’s voice became frightened.
“You followed me?””
Brenda stepped closer.
“You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.””
The video cut.
Static.
Then the screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
We had just seen something that changed everything.
Dad looked at Marcus.
“She was alive when you saw her.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“The parking lot.””
“Then why didn’t you call the police?””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“Because when I arrived, Brenda was already there.””
My heart stopped.
“What happened?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She told me Elena had left.””
“But she hadn’t.””
“No.””
Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.
“She lied.””
Marcus nodded.
“And then an hour later, Elena’s car crashed.””
The truth finally started forming.
Brenda had been there.
She had followed my mother.
She had hidden evidence.
She had controlled the story.
But there was still one question.
If Brenda caused all this…
Why was my mother’s car the one that crashed?
Marcus looked at the final hidden file on the flash drive.
A file we hadn’t noticed before.
The name was simple.
*“The Real Accident.””*
He clicked it.
And before the video loaded, a notification appeared.
*Last modified: Two days after Elena’s death.*
Dad stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face turned pale.
“Because nobody should have been able to access this.””

A new question appeared.
Who had edited my mother’s final message after she died?
