Chapter 15: The Family I Chose

The video loaded slowly.
For a moment, there was only darkness.
Then the camera turned on.
It wasn’t my mother.
It wasn’t Brenda.
It was Dad.
Eight years younger.
Standing outside the hospital.
I felt confused.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
Dad looked terrified.
Because he remembered.
The video showed him sitting alone.
Crying.
Holding a piece of paper.
Then his younger voice whispered:
“I can’t lose her.””
The camera moved.
Someone was recording him from a distance.
Then my mother’s voice appeared.
“Elena?””
She was alive.
But barely.
She was sitting in a hospital bed.
My entire body froze.
The accident hadn’t killed her immediately.
She had survived.
Dad moved closer to the screen.
“No…”
The video continued.
My mother looked at him.
“Andre, listen to me.””
He held her hand.
“I’m here.””
She shook her head.
“You need to protect Nia.””
“I will.””
“No.””
Her voice became serious.
“You need to protect her from the truth being used against her.””
Dad cried.
“Don’t talk like this.””
My mother looked at him.
“I need you to promise me.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
“I need you to promise that no matter what happens, you will choose her.””
Dad’s younger self nodded.
“I promise.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad whispered:
“She survived.””
Marcus nodded.
“For three days.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked heartbroken.
“She was alive for three days after the crash.””
My voice shook.
“Why didn’t anyone tell us?””
Marcus looked at Dad.
“Because Brenda made sure nobody could.””
Dad stood suddenly.
“What happened?””
Marcus took a deep breath.
“She paid someone at the hospital to change records.””
My hands covered my mouth.
“She stole those three days from you.””
Dad looked destroyed.
“Where is she?””
Marcus looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Then Claire’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Everyone turned.
She listened silently.
Then whispered:
“She turned herself in.””
Dad froze.
“What?””
Claire ended the call.
“Brenda is at the police station.””
Nobody moved.
“Why?”” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
“She said she wants to confess.””
A strange feeling came over me.
After all the lies.
After all the pain.
I expected anger.
But what I felt was exhaustion.
A lifetime of secrets had finally ended.
Later that evening, Dad and I sat on the porch.
The same porch where I had begged to be let inside.
Except this time, I was warm.
And I wasn’t alone.
“I’m sorry,” Dad said.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not seeing what was happening.””
I was quiet.
Then I answered honestly.
“You hurt me.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But you came back.””
His eyes filled.
“Always.””
I leaned against his shoulder.
For years, I thought family was about sharing the same blood.
I was wrong.
Family was the person who stayed when things became difficult.
The person who protected you.
The person who chose you.
A month later, Brenda’s confession revealed everything.
She admitted to hiding evidence, manipulating records, and using my mother’s secret to control everyone around her.
But the biggest surprise came afterward.
The DNA test confirmed what we already knew in our hearts.
Marcus was my biological father.
But Andre was still my dad.
The man who raised me.
The man who held my hand through every nightmare.
The man who stood outside in the cold because he refused to let me face pain alone.
Years later, I still think about that snowy night.
The night one person tried to punish me.
The night another person reminded me what love really looked like.
May you like
Because the truth was never about who gave me my blood.
It was about who gave me a home.
