Chapter 9: The Woman Frank Saw Coming
The words followed me all night.
Your entire inheritance.
I sat in Frank’s old chair by the window while the cabin grew quiet around me.
For years, I thought the cabin was the only thing worth protecting.
I was wrong.
Frank had seen something I refused to see.
A storm coming.
Eric sat across from me.
Neither of us slept.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“You already said that.””
“I know.””
He looked at his hands.
“But I don’t think I understood what I was apologizing for.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because maybe that was the hardest part.
People could say sorry.
But understanding was different.
“What did Thomas say exactly?””
Eric took a deep breath.
“He found another clause in Dad’s estate plan.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of clause?””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Dad created a separate account.””
I frowned.
“An account?””
“For your future.””
I felt confused.
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would give everything away if someone asked.””
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like Frank.
He always knew me better than I knew myself.
Eric continued.
“He wanted you protected.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
Not because of money.
Because even after death, Frank was still taking care of me.
Then footsteps came from outside.
Eric stood immediately.
The front door opened.
Jessica walked in.
She looked exhausted.
But not defeated.
“I need to talk to you.””
Eric stepped forward.
“No.””
She stopped.
“What?””
“You don’t get to walk in here and pretend nothing happened.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“I need to explain.””
I looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
Finally, she sat down.
“I made mistakes.””
Eric laughed quietly.
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
She looked at him.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“Our future.””
She pointed around.
“This place was sitting here unused most of the year.””
I stared.
Unused?
The memories inside these walls meant nothing to her.
“It’s not just a building,” I said.
She looked away.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice stayed calm.
“You don’t.””
She was silent.
Eric crossed his arms.
“Why did you remove Mom from the family chat?””
Jessica didn’t answer.
“Why did you invite your family before asking her?””
Still silent.
“Why did you prepare paperwork?””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought she would eventually agree.””
Eric stared.
“That’s not an answer.””
Jessica looked at him.
“You always say your mother deserves everything.””
“Yes.””
“But what about us?””
There it was.
The real argument.
Not the cabin.
Not the money.
Entitlement.
She believed someone else’s sacrifice was the reason she deserved comfort.
“I wanted security,” Jessica said.
Eric shook his head.
“You wanted control.””
She looked hurt.
Maybe she was.
But hurt didn’t erase what happened.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Your father knew I was going to do this.””
Eric froze.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He knew.””
I stood.
“What did you say?””
Jessica smiled sadly.
“Frank knew exactly what kind of person I was.””
The room went silent.
“Then why did he let Eric marry me?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Then Eric’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
A message from Thomas.
His face changed.
“Mom.””
“What?””
Eric slowly turned the phone toward me.
The message was short.
But the words changed everything.
“Frank left one final recording. It explains why he never warned Eric about Jessica.””
I looked at Eric.
“When can we see it?””
He stared at the message.
“Tomorrow morning.””
I looked around the cabin.
The walls.
The memories.
The life Frank built.
And for the first time…
I wondered what my husband had discovered before he died.
May you like
Because if he knew the truth…
Why did he stay silent?
