Chapter 11: The Truth Jessica Was Hiding

By the time we reached the cabin, Jessica was already there.

But something had changed.

The confident woman who stood on my porch days earlier was gone.

She looked nervous.

Angry.

Cornered.

Eric noticed too.

“What happened?””

She looked at him.

“I need to explain.””

He shook his head.

“You had your chance.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.””

I stepped inside.

“Then make us understand.””

Jessica looked at me.

For the first time, she looked less powerful.

More human.

“I made a mistake.””

Eric laughed softly.

“You keep calling it that.””

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared enough to lie?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised us.

She sat on the couch.

The same couch where that stranger had put his shoes.

“I grew up watching my parents struggle.””

Nobody spoke.

“I promised myself I would never live like that.””

Eric crossed his arms.

“And that gave you the right to take from someone else?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“No, it didn’t.””

She looked at me.

“I saw this cabin and I saw security.””

I shook my head.

“You saw an opportunity.””

She closed her eyes.

“Maybe.””

That one word carried more truth than all her explanations.

Eric stepped closer.

“Did you know about my father’s recording?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

“How?””

“I heard Thomas talking.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

I stared.

“So you knew Frank warned us.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came back?””

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted to fix it.””

Eric shook his head.

“You wanted to control the damage.””

She didn’t argue.

Because he was right.

Then Jessica reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after we got married.””

Eric looked confused.

“What is it?””

She handed it to him.

“Something from your father.””

My heart stopped.

“Another letter?””

Jessica nodded.

“I never opened it.””

Eric looked at her suspiciously.

“Why?””

“Because it had your name on it.””

The room went quiet.

Eric opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Jessica would eventually have to choose.””

I frowned.

Eric handed me the letter.

Frank’s handwriting filled the page.

Eric,

A person’s true character is not revealed when they want something.

It is revealed when they have the chance to do wrong and choose not to.

I kept reading.

If Jessica is reading this, I hope she understands something.

This family was never built on money.

It was built on trust.

My hands trembled.

Frank had written directly to her.

Not accusing.

Not attacking.

Just giving her a choice.

Eric looked at Jessica.

“Did you ever see this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why did you keep the envelope?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.””

That surprised me.

“I knew what I was doing was wrong.””

Eric looked hurt.

“Then why didn’t you stop?””

Jessica looked at him.

“Because every time I got closer to admitting it, I thought about losing everything.””

The answer was painful.

But honest.

Then the front door opened.

We all turned.

Jessica’s father stood there.

Richard.

His expression was not surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not surprised.

“You knew,” Eric said.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Eric…”

“No.””

My son stepped forward.

“You knew what she was doing.””

Richard sighed.

“I was trying to help my daughter.””

“By taking my mother’s home?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Richard looked at me.

And finally admitted:

“We thought Linda would be easier to convince than Frank ever was.””

The room went completely silent.

My hands went cold.

Because that sentence revealed something bigger.

This wasn’t only Jessica.

May you like

It was her family.

And they had been planning this long before I ever arrived with Frank’s tackle box.
