Chapter 10: The Recording Frank Left Behind

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Frank’s voice in my head.

Not a memory.

A question.

Why did he stay silent?

Frank was never the kind of man who avoided difficult conversations.

He fixed broken doors.

Broken engines.

Broken relationships.

If something was wrong, he faced it.

So why did he leave a warning hidden away instead of telling us?

At eight in the morning, Eric and I drove to Thomas’s office.

Neither of us spoke much.

The silence between us felt different now.

Before, it was filled with anger.

Now, it was filled with things we didn’t know how to say.

When we arrived, Thomas was already waiting.

He looked tired.

Like he had been carrying this secret for years.

“Thank you for coming,” he said.

Eric sat down.

“Show us.””

Thomas nodded.

He placed a small device on the desk.

“It’s an old recording.””

My hands tightened.

“From Frank?””

“Yes.””

Thomas pressed a button.

For a few seconds, there was only static.

Then I heard it.

His voice.

“Linda.””

My breath caught.

I covered my mouth.

It was like he was sitting beside me.

Older.

Tired.

But still him.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened that made you question the people around you.””

Eric looked down.

The recording continued.

“I want you both to understand something. I never believed Eric was a bad son.””

My eyes moved toward my son.

He closed his eyes.

“But good people can be influenced. Good people can ignore signs because they want to believe the best.””

Frank paused.

“I did the same thing once.””

I frowned.

The room became completely silent.

“I ignored my instincts because I wanted my family to stay together.””

Thomas looked at Eric.

The recording continued.

“When Eric introduced Jessica, I saw how much he loved her. And I saw how much he wanted to build a life with her.””

A pause.

“But I also noticed something.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Jessica was always interested in what we owned.””

Eric whispered:

“Dad…”

Frank’s voice continued.

“She asked questions about the cabin. The land. The trust. The accounts.””

I looked at Thomas.

He nodded.

“She was careful. She never asked directly. She made it sound like curiosity.””

The recording paused again.

Then Frank said something that broke my heart.

“I didn’t tell Eric because I knew what would happen.””

Eric looked up.

“What?””

Frank answered as if he heard him.

“Eric would defend her.””

My son looked away.

Because it was true.

Frank knew his son.

He knew him better than anyone.

“I didn’t want to destroy my son’s marriage before I had proof.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Eric spoke.

“He knew.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“He knew and he still trusted me.””

“Yes.””

Eric covered his face.

I watched him struggle.

Not with anger.

With guilt.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”” Eric whispered.

Thomas answered quietly.

“Because Frank believed you had to see the truth yourself.””

The words hurt.

But they made sense.

You can warn someone about a storm.

But sometimes they only believe you after they feel the rain.

Eric looked at me.

“Mom.””

I waited.

“I’m sorry I didn’t listen.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

His voice broke.

“I spent years thinking I was protecting my family.””

He looked around.

“But I was protecting someone who was using mine.””

I reached across the table.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

But because he was finally seeing.

Thomas cleared his throat.

“There is still one thing we need to discuss.””

Eric looked at him.

“What?””

“The inheritance.””

My stomach tightened.

Thomas opened another file.

“Frank created a condition.””

“Another one?”” Eric asked.

“Yes.””

“What condition?””

Thomas looked at me.

Then at Eric.

“Linda cannot lose access to her financial security unless she chooses to.””

Eric frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means nobody can pressure her. Nobody can manipulate her. Nobody can convince her to give up control.””

Thomas paused.

“Frank knew exactly what kind of person your mother was.””

Eric smiled sadly.

“She gives too much.””

Thomas nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at the documents.

For years, I thought love meant giving everything.

Maybe Frank was trying to teach me something.

Love also meant protecting yourself.

When we left Thomas’s office, Eric stopped beside the car.

“Mom.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked back toward the building.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Yes.””

“Do you think I’m like Dad?””

The question surprised me.

I stepped closer.

“You are.””

His eyes filled.

“Even after everything?””

“Yes.””

I touched his shoulder.

“Because your father made mistakes too.””

Eric looked at me.

“But he learned.””

I nodded.

“That’s what matters.””

Then my phone rang.

It was Thomas.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice sounded serious.

“Linda, you need to come back to the cabin immediately.””

“Why?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Jessica found out about the recording.””
