Chapter 4: The Condition Frank Never Revealed

I stared at Eric’s face.

For years, I had known every expression my son made.

The way he looked when he was embarrassed.

The way he looked when he was afraid.

The way he looked when he knew he had made a mistake but didn’t want to admit it.

That was the expression I saw now.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Mom?”” Eric said quietly.

I locked my phone.

“What?””

He glanced at the folder in Jessica’s hand.

“You’re not going to make this difficult, are you?””

I almost smiled.

The question itself told me everything.

He wasn’t asking if I was okay.

He wasn’t asking why I was hurt.

He was asking if I would cooperate.

“I need some time,” I said.

Jessica immediately shook her head.

“Time for what?””

“To think.””

She looked annoyed.

“We already explained everything.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You explained what you wanted.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then Eric stepped closer.

“Mom, can we please talk privately?””

I nodded.

“Fine.””

We walked toward the dock.

The same dock Frank rebuilt three times because he refused to let storms take away something he loved.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The lake was calm.

Too calm.

“Mom,” Eric finally said, “you have to understand my position.””

I looked at him.

“Your position?””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“Jessica’s family came from out of state. They needed somewhere to stay. It was supposed to be temporary.””

“And I was supposed to sleep somewhere else?””

“That wasn’t the plan.””

“Then what was the plan?””

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

“Eric.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“We thought maybe you’d consider letting us manage the cabin.””

“Manage?””

“Handle repairs. Expenses. Bookings.””

I stared.

“Bookings?””

His eyes shifted.

“Mom…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“Say it.””

He didn’t.

So I did.

“You wanted to turn my home into a rental property.””

He said nothing.

The worst part wasn’t that he wanted it.

The worst part was that he had already made plans.

Before asking me.

Before talking to me.

Before remembering I was his mother.

“I can’t believe you,” I whispered.

His face hardened slightly.

“You’re acting like I’m stealing from you.””

“Because you came to my door and asked me to leave.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I looked at him.

“Your father spent years teaching you what family meant.””

His expression changed.

“Don’t bring Dad into this.””

“Why?””

“Because you always do that.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You always compare everything to him.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because Frank wasn’t just my husband.

He was the person who knew me before I became someone’s mother.

The person who saw me when nobody else was watching.

“I’m sorry you feel that way,” I said.

Eric looked surprised.

Maybe he expected an argument.

Maybe he expected tears.

But I had no more energy left to beg my own son to care.

My phone buzzed again.

I looked down.

Thomas had sent another message.

“Frank’s condition requires Eric to be present when the trust details are revealed. Bring him to my office tomorrow.””

I looked at Eric.

“What?””

I put my phone away.

“Your father left instructions.””

His face changed.

“What instructions?””

“I’m not discussing them here.””

“Mom.””

“Tomorrow. Thomas’s office.””

He stepped forward.

“Is this some kind of threat?””

I looked at my son.

The little boy who once held a fishing rod beside his father.

The man standing in front of me felt like a stranger.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It’s the first honest conversation we’ve had in a long time.””

I walked away.

But before I reached the porch, Jessica called out.

“Linda.””

I turned.

She stood beside Eric.

Her expression was no longer polite.

It was cold.

“If you make this complicated, everyone will remember who ruined this weekend.””

I looked at the people inside my cabin.

The people eating food I bought.

Sitting on furniture I paid for.

Laughing inside the walls Frank built.

Then I looked back at her.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“They’ll remember who tried to take something that wasn’t theirs.””

May you like

And for the first time since arriving…

Nobody had an answer.
