Chapter 8: The Conversation At The Cabin

We returned to the cabin before sunset.

Not because we were ready to face Jessica.

Because we needed to.

The truth had been hidden long enough.

When we arrived, the driveway was still full.

The same cars.

The same people.

But this time, I wasn’t standing outside with a bag.

I was walking back into my own home.

Eric walked beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

When we reached the porch, Jessica opened the door.

Her smile appeared instantly.

Then disappeared when she saw Eric’s expression.

“What happened?””

Eric stepped inside.

“We need to talk.””

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“About what?””

I walked in.

Past the sofa.

Past the people who suddenly became quiet.

Past the kitchen where my food was still sitting on the counter.

Jessica followed us into the living room.

“What is going on?””

Eric placed the folder on the table.

“You lied to me.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You knew about the trust.””

A pause.

Tiny.

But I saw it.

She recovered quickly.

“I don’t know what you think you found.””

“That’s the problem.””

Eric looked at her.

“I trusted you.””

She crossed her arms.

“I’m your wife.””

“And she’s my mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Jessica looked at me.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No,” Eric said.

“This is the first honest conversation we’ve had.””

Her expression hardened.

“Your mother is making you choose between us.””

I almost laughed.

Because it was exactly what she was doing.

But Eric answered first.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You’re making me choose between the truth and a lie.””

Her face turned red.

“You’re really going to believe her?””

Eric looked at the folder.

“I’m believing evidence.””

Jessica stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

For a moment, I saw confidence disappear from her face.

That scared me more than anger.

Because people who lose control often reveal who they really are.

“You think your mother is innocent?”” Jessica asked.

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled slightly.

“She never told you everything about the cabin.””

My heart stopped.

Eric turned toward me.

“What is she talking about?””

I looked at Jessica.

“Explain.””

She leaned back.

“Ask your mother why Frank changed the trust.””

The room became silent.

My heartbeat filled my ears.

Eric looked at me.

“Mom?””

I hated that question.

Not because I had something to hide.

Because Jessica knew exactly what she was doing.

She planted doubt.

The same way she planted everything else.

“Your father changed the trust because he wanted to protect me.””

Jessica laughed softly.

“Is that what he told you?””

I stood still.

“What are you suggesting?””

She looked at Eric.

“I’m suggesting your father knew your mother wasn’t planning to share.””

Eric frowned.

“That’s not true.””

Jessica shrugged.

“Maybe you should ask her why Frank was worried.””

I looked at my son.

“Eric, your father worried because he loved me.””

Jessica smiled.

“Or because he knew something you don’t.””

The room felt colder.

Then Eric said something I never expected.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped between us.

“I spent years letting people tell me what happened.””

He looked at Jessica.

“I believed you.””

Then he looked at me.

“I ignored Mom.””

He took a breath.

“But I’m done letting other people decide what I think.””

Jessica’s expression changed.

“Eric.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I need answers.””

She stared at him.

“What kind of answers?””

He pointed toward the folder.

“All of them.””

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

The name on the screen made his face change.

Thomas.

Eric answered.

“Hello?””

He listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“What?””

I stood.

“What happened?””

Eric ended the call.

His hands were shaking.

“Thomas found something else.””

“What?””

He looked toward Jessica.

Then back at me.

“Frank didn’t only protect the cabin.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“He protected your entire inheritance.””
