Chapter 6: The Brother At The Door

Daniel walked into the mansion like he still owned it.

Like nothing had changed.

Like Emily wasn’t standing ten feet away from him after eighteen months of being missing.

His eyes moved through the room.

First to me.

Then to Lily.

Then to Emily.

The color disappeared from his face.

For the first time in my life, I saw my brother truly afraid.

“Emily?””

She stepped closer to me.

“You knew.””

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

My hands tightened.

“You knew she was alive.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Michael, let me explain.””

I laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“Explain what?””

He stepped forward.

“I didn’t know it would happen like this.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” she replied.

“I understand perfectly.””

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy, is Uncle Daniel bad?””

The question broke something inside me.

Because I had no answer.

Daniel looked at Lily.

His expression changed.

For a second, he looked guilty.

Then Richard spoke.

“Don’t let emotions ruin everything.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to talk about emotions.””

Richard ignored me.

“Daniel, tell him.””

Daniel remained silent.

“Tell him why Emily had to disappear.””

My stomach dropped.

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Michael, don’t listen.””

But I needed to hear it.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because she was going to expose us.””

The words felt like a knife.

Us.

Not him.

Us.

“You helped him.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I had no choice.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You always had a choice.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You think I wanted this?””

“Yes.””

Her answer was immediate.

“You chose money over your family.””

Daniel looked away.

I remembered every conversation.

Every time he told me to stop searching.

Every time he said Emily was probably gone.

He wasn’t comforting me.

He was controlling me.

“Where did you keep her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“In the only place nobody would look.””

I looked around the mansion.

My home.

The place where I raised my daughter.

The place where my wife was hidden.

My voice became quiet.

“You all watched me suffer.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel finally whispered:

“I was trying to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“Fix what?””

He had no answer.

Then Emily noticed something.

She looked at Daniel’s hand.

A small scar near his thumb.

Her face changed.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“That night…”

She stared at his hand.

“He was there.””

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

“You told me you were at the office,” Emily said.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“I was.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“You grabbed my arm when I tried to leave.””

My breathing stopped.

Daniel stepped back.

“I don’t remember.””

Emily’s voice became sharper.

“You left this scar on my wrist.””

She raised her sleeve slightly.

I saw the mark.

A small scar.

One I had never noticed.

Because I was too busy believing the story everyone told me.

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard looked annoyed.

That reaction told me the truth.

They had not expected Emily to survive.

They had not expected Lily to hear the knocks.

They had not expected me to open the wall.

I stepped between them and my family.

“You’re all going to answer for this.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t understand what will happen.””

I stared at him.

“I understand one thing.””

I pointed toward Emily.

“You stole eighteen months from my wife.””

Then toward Lily.

“You stole her mother from my daughter.””

Daniel’s eyes lowered.

And for the first time, he looked ashamed.

But then his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched him read the message.

Then he slowly looked up.

“Michael…”

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The police are already here.””

Relief almost hit me.

Until Daniel added:

“But they aren’t here for Richard.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Who are they here for?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“They came with evidence that you were involved in Emily’s disappearance.””
