Chapter 11: The Brother Nobody Knew
The voice on the phone was small.
Young.
Scared.
But the question was clear.
*Are you my brother?*
I couldn’t speak.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Michael?””
I put the phone on speaker.
“Who is this?””
The boy stayed silent.
Then whispered:
“My name is Ethan.””
My entire body froze.
Detective Harris immediately motioned for everyone to stay quiet.
“Ethan, where are you?””
The boy breathed heavily.
“I don’t know.””
“Who are you with?””
Another silence.
Then:
“The man who took me.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who took you?””
The line became filled with static.
Then the boy whispered:
“Uncle Daniel.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
The room felt unreal.
Daniel.
Again.
Always Daniel.
Detective Harris grabbed his phone.
“We need to find him.””
I stared at the screen.
My own brother.
The person I trusted more than anyone.
Had hidden my wife.
Had tried to frame me.
And now there was a child.
A child who might be my brother.
Emily sat beside me.
“Michael.””
I looked at her.
“I didn’t know.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
That was the hardest part.
She believed me.
Even after everything.
Detective Harris returned.
“We traced the call.””
I stood immediately.
“Where?””
“An abandoned property outside the city.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
The detective stopped me.
“You’re emotionally involved.””
I looked at him.
“He’s my family.””
Emily stood.
“I’m coming too.””
I turned.
“No.””
Her expression hardened.
“Michael, I spent eighteen months trapped because people decided what I could and couldn’t handle.””
I stopped.
She was right.
I nodded.
“Okay.””
The officers moved quickly.
The abandoned property was an old farmhouse.
The windows were broken.
The yard was overgrown.
But there were signs someone had been there recently.
A light inside.
A chair outside.
A child’s shoe near the door.
My heart dropped.
“Ethan.””
We entered carefully.
The house was empty.
Almost.
A voice recording played from a small speaker on the table.
Daniel’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this, then Michael found the truth.””
I felt anger rise.
The recording continued.
“I never wanted things to happen this way.””
Emily whispered:
“Liar.””
Daniel’s voice continued.
“Our father destroyed everything when he kept secrets.””
A pause.
Then:
“But he was right about one thing.””
The recording stopped.
Detective Harris searched the room.
“He left something.””
On the wall was a photograph.
Not of Ethan.
Of my father.
Standing beside a woman I had never seen.
And beside them was a baby.
A baby holding a small toy.
I stepped closer.
The woman was crying.
But my father was smiling.
On the back of the photograph was another message.
*The truth was never about the child. The truth was about who wanted him gone.*
Emily looked at me.
“Michael…”
I noticed something.
A detail nobody else saw.
The woman in the picture was wearing a necklace.
A necklace I recognized.
Because I had seen it before.
On Vanessa.
My blood ran cold.
“Vanessa knew.””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed at the photograph.
“She knew this family secret.””
Before anyone could respond, footsteps sounded upstairs.
Everyone turned.
A small voice cried out.
“Help!””
We ran.
At the end of the hallway was a locked door.
Behind it, someone was crying.
A child.
Detective Harris broke the lock.
The door opened.
And there stood a boy.
About five years old.
Holding a stuffed animal.
He looked at me.
Then at Emily.
Then whispered:
“Mom said you would come.””
Emily froze.
“Your mom?””
The boy nodded.
“She told me my brother would save me.””
I stepped closer.
“Who is your mother?””
The boy looked toward the stairs.
May you like
Then answered:
“Vanessa.””
