Chapter 2: The Secret Room

The first crack in the wooden panel echoed through the storage room.

Lily covered her ears.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Stop.””

I didn’t.

For eighteen months, everyone had told me to accept that Emily was gone.

The police.

The investigators.

Even Vanessa.

They all used the same words.

“She probably left.””

“There’s no evidence of foul play.””

“You need to focus on Lily.””

But nobody ever answered one question.

Why did Emily leave everything behind?

A person planning to disappear doesn’t leave their wedding ring.

They don’t leave their child’s birthday drawing on the refrigerator.

They don’t leave a half-finished cup of tea on the kitchen table.

Unless they never planned to leave.

The wood cracked again.

A small opening appeared.

Cold air rushed out.

Not the dusty air of an old storage room.

Cold air.

Fresh air.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked pale.

“What is this?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The lie came too quickly.

I widened the opening.

Behind the panel was a narrow passage.

A hidden space built between the walls of the mansion.

My stomach dropped.

Our mansion had been in my family for three generations.

I knew every hallway.

Every staircase.

Every room.

At least I thought I did.

Lily stepped closer.

“Mommy was in there.””

I immediately pulled her behind me.

“Stay with me.””

Vanessa moved toward the door.

“Michael, listen to me. We should call someone.””

I turned.

“Who?””

“The police.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe she said it.

“The same police you told that Emily probably ran away?””

Her face tightened.

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

I pointed at the hidden passage.

“Then explain this.””

She had no answer.

I grabbed a flashlight from a nearby shelf and stepped inside.

The passage was narrow.

The walls were old brick.

Dust covered the floor.

But there were marks.

Recent marks.

Footprints.

My breathing stopped.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

“Michael,” Vanessa called from behind me.

“Come back.””

I turned the flashlight toward her.

“Were you ever inside this room?””

Her silence lasted too long.

“No.””

Another lie.

I walked deeper.

The passage opened into a small hidden room.

And then I saw it.

A chair.

A blanket.

A cup.

A small table.

Someone had been living here.

My legs nearly gave out.

On the wall was a picture.

A family picture.

Me.

Emily.

Lily.

Taken three months before Emily disappeared.

Someone had placed it there.

Someone wanted whoever was inside this room to remember us.

Lily’s voice came from behind me.

“Daddy…”

I turned.

She was staring at something on the floor.

A small stuffed rabbit.

Emily bought it for Lily when she was four.

Lily picked it up.

“Mommy’s bunny.””

I looked closer.

There was something attached to it.

A small piece of fabric.

White.

Like part of a shirt.

My hands trembled.

Because I recognized it.

It was from the blouse Emily wore the night she vanished.

“Michael.””

Vanessa’s voice was different now.

Not scared.

Desperate.

“You need to stop.””

I slowly turned.

“Why?””

She looked at the hidden room.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Because Emily isn’t the only person who knows what happened.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Who else?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stepped forward.

“Protect me from what?””

Before she could answer, a sound came from behind the hidden wall.

A weak voice.

A woman’s voice.

“Michael…”

My entire world stopped.

I knew that voice.

Even after eighteen months.

Even after endless nights replaying memories.

I knew it.

“Emily?””

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!””

She ran forward.

I grabbed her hand.

Behind the wall, the voice came again.

But this time, it was weaker.

“Don’t trust Vanessa…”

Vanessa’s face turned completely white.

Because she knew.

May you like

Emily was alive.

And she knew exactly what she was about to reveal.
