Chapter 12: Vanessa’s Final Secret

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

The boy stood in the doorway holding his stuffed animal.

Completely unaware that his words had changed everything.

“Vanessa is your mother?””

I asked quietly.

The boy nodded.

“She said I wasn’t supposed to tell.””

Emily looked at me.

Her face showed disbelief.

But not anger.

Confusion.

A thousand questions.

Detective Harris crouched down.

“What’s your name?””

“Ethan.””

“How old are you?””

“Five.””

I looked away.

Five years old.

The timeline didn’t make sense.

My father died six years ago.

Emily disappeared eighteen months ago.

Nothing connected.

Until it did.

The necklace.

The photograph.

Vanessa.

I looked at the boy.

“Where is Vanessa now?””

Ethan’s face changed.

“She left with Uncle Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“When?””

“Today.””

Of course.

She disappeared when everything started collapsing.

Detective Harris immediately contacted his team.

I stayed beside Ethan.

The boy looked at me.

“Are you really my brother?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

I looked at Emily.

She stepped closer.

Then she placed her hand on his shoulder.

“We don’t know everything yet.””

Ethan looked down.

“But Dad said I had a brother.””

My heart stopped.

“Dad?””

He nodded.

“The man in the pictures.””

My father.

I felt dizzy.

“Ethan, what did he tell you?””

The boy hugged his stuffed animal.

“He said Michael would protect me.””

Those words broke something inside me.

Because my father had known.

He knew this day might come.

Back at the mansion, Detective Harris continued searching through old records.

Hours passed.

Then he found something.

A birth certificate.

A real one.

Ethan Carter.

Father: James Carter.

Mother: Vanessa Reed.

I stared at the paper.

The truth was finally there.

But it created more questions.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Detective Harris looked at the records.

“Because someone changed the documents.””

Emily looked at me.

“Who had access?””

I already knew.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Richard.

But then Detective Harris found another file.

A letter from my father.

This one was addressed to me.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Michael,

If you have found Ethan, then I am sorry.

I read slowly.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I was afraid of what came next.

Your brother was born from a relationship I had before I married your mother.

I stopped.

My father had another child.

Ethan.

The letter continued.

I tried to protect him because someone wanted him removed from the family.

Someone close to us.

Someone who believed Ethan threatened their future.

I looked at Vanessa’s name on the birth certificate.

But she wasn’t the threat.

Not originally.

The letter continued.

The person who started this was not Richard.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone who has been hiding behind the image of a victim.

Emily read over my shoulder.

Her expression changed.

“Michael…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the final sentence.

My father had written:

*The person who destroyed our family is the person who convinced everyone they were saving it.*

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood there.

No one knew how she entered.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

And terrified.

Her eyes moved to Ethan.

Then to me.

“I can explain.””

I stepped forward.

“Start talking.””

She looked at Emily.

Then at Ethan.

Then whispered:

“The person you’re looking for…”

Her voice cracked.

“Was never Richard.””

The room went silent.

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

May you like

And said a name I never expected.

“Your mother.””
