Chapter 14: The Last Family Secret

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It felt like the entire world had stopped.

“My mother?””

Detective Harris nodded slowly.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked at the old photographs.

“The woman Daniel brought is not your biological mother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She was believed to be your mother for years.””

Emily looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

The detective placed a file on the table.

“Your father changed records before he died.””

I opened the file.

Inside was a DNA report.

A name.

A woman I had never heard of.

My hands shook.

“This can’t be real.””

Vanessa whispered:

“It is.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Your father told me.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Michael.””

I pulled away.

Not from her.

From the pain.

My whole life felt like a story someone else wrote.

The front door opened.

Officers entered.

Behind them was Daniel.

And beside him was an elderly woman.

She looked at me.

And immediately started crying.

“Michael.””

I didn’t recognize her.

But she knew my name.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Sorry?””

His eyes were red.

“I should have told you.””

“You trapped my wife.””

His head lowered.

“I know.””

“You helped destroy our family.””

“I know.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at the woman beside him.

“Because I was afraid.””

The woman spoke.

“I made him afraid.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“My name is Catherine.””

I waited.

“I was your father’s first wife.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Your mother died when you were very young.””

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She wasn’t the woman who gave birth to you.””

I couldn’t speak.

Catherine continued.

“Your father protected you by hiding the truth.””

“From who?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then Ethan.

Then me.

“From my family.””

The same phrase.

The same nightmare.

Everyone was protecting something.

Everyone was hiding something.

Catherine continued.

“I wanted Ethan gone because I was afraid he would take away everything.””

Her voice broke.

“I made terrible choices.””

I stared at her.

“You let them hide my wife.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Emily stepped forward.

“And you let a child grow up without knowing his family.””

Catherine looked at Ethan.

“I was wrong.””

Ethan moved closer to Emily.

Not Catherine.

That small action said everything.

Daniel looked at me.

“I tried to fix it.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t fix eighteen months.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The police took Catherine and Daniel aside.

But before they left, Daniel stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Richard wasn’t working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“Someone has been watching this family for years.””

Detective Harris frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered:

“The person who originally created the hidden room.””

Everyone looked confused.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew the family would eventually destroy itself.””

Emily looked at me.

“What did he leave behind?””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“A final room.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where?””

May you like

Daniel pointed upward.

“In the mansion.””
