Chapter 5: The Letter With Two Names

Nobody moved.

Vanessa held the envelope against her chest like it was the only thing protecting her.

Daniel stared at her.

“Why does Clara’s father’s letter have your name on it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At our relatives.

At the people who had stood up for me.

Then she looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

She laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You always wanted the truth.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you have no idea what you’re asking for.””

Grandma Margaret stepped forward.

“Vanessa, give her the letter.””

“No.””

“Give it to her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No one cared about what happened to me.””

Her voice grew louder.

“Everyone protected Clara.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Protected me from what?””

She looked at me.

“From knowing that Dad chose you.””

The words confused me.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Do you know what it feels like to spend your entire childhood watching your father look at someone else like they were his whole world?””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa…”

“No.””

She wiped her cheek.

“Let me finish.””

The room listened.

Even the guests who had no idea what was happening were frozen.

“After Mom died, Dad changed. He became obsessed with making sure you were okay.””

I remembered that.

Dad always checked on me.

Always asked if I had eaten.

Always showed up.

“He forgot me.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“He didn’t forget you.””

“You weren’t there!””

The anger exploded out of her.

“You don’t know what it was like.””

I stayed silent.

Because for the first time, I saw something underneath her cruelty.

Pain.

But pain didn’t erase what she had done.

Not tonight.

Not ever.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Is that why you moved her seat?””

Vanessa looked away.

“It was never about the chair.””

Everyone knew it.

She finally admitted it.

“It was about reminding her.””

“Reminding her of what?””

“That she wasn’t the only person who lost him.””

The words hurt because they sounded almost human.

Almost understandable.

Until she continued.

“She always got the love.””

I shook my head.

“No, Vanessa. We both lost Dad.””

She looked at me.

“You got him.””

The silence after that was painful.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to tell her she was wrong.

That I missed him too.

That losing him didn’t make me lucky.

But before I could speak, my mother’s voice came through the phone.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked at the phone.

“You don’t get to talk.””

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“You know exactly why that letter exists.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My mother did.

“Because your father discovered what Vanessa did.””

My blood ran cold.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Stop.””

“What did she do?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa stepped toward me.

“Don’t listen.””

My mother continued.

“She was seventeen.””

Grandma covered her mouth.

Daniel looked shocked.

“Seventeen?””

My mother’s voice shook.

“She made a choice that changed all of our lives.””

Vanessa grabbed the phone from my hand.

The call ended.

Everyone gasped.

“Vanessa!””

Daniel’s voice was sharp.

She stood there holding the phone.

Breathing heavily.

Then she slowly looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“You just destroyed my wedding.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I stopped you from destroying yourself.””

I looked at the envelope.

“You’re afraid of what’s inside.””

Her silence answered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give Clara the letter.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You too?””

“I asked you a question.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“I understand that my wife has been keeping secrets from everyone.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

Then angry.

She threw the envelope onto the table.

“Fine.””

Everyone watched.

“Read it.””

I picked it up.

My father’s handwriting was right there.

But before I opened it, Vanessa whispered:

“Just remember one thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She smiled sadly.

“When you find out who you really are, don’t pretend I didn’t warn you.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

The first line made my entire body go numb.

“Dear Clara, if you are reading this, it means Vanessa finally told you enough of the truth…”

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because the next sentence was even worse.

“…but she still hasn’t told you the part that could destroy her.””
