Chapter 13: The Person Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
The name on my phone screen made the entire room disappear.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
The message was from:
*Evelyn Hart.*
My mother’s name.
But not the mother standing in front of me.
Another name.
A name Richard had just reacted to like he had seen a ghost.
I looked up.
“Who is Evelyn Hart?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
I turned toward Richard.
“Who is she?””
His face had lost all color.
“Clara…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Not another secret.””
The ballroom was already filled with too many.
Too many hidden conversations.
Too many people deciding what I deserved to know.
“I want the truth.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“She was your mother’s sister.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked like she was about to break.
“My aunt?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at the phone.
“But she’s dead.””
My mother slowly shook her head.
“No.””
The word hit me harder than anything else.
“No?””
She wiped her tears.
“She was declared dead.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Declared?””
Richard nodded.
“There was never a body.””
I felt a chill.
“How did nobody tell me this?””
My mother looked away.
“Because we thought she was gone forever.””
Thomas, my father’s attorney, looked uncomfortable.
“Your father spent years searching.””
“For her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard answered.
“Because Evelyn knew the truth.””
I looked at the message again.
I typed a reply with shaking hands.
*Who are you?*
The response came almost instantly.
*The person who knows why your father really died.*
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
“My father?””
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Clara…”
I held up the phone.
“She said she knows why Dad died.””
Grandma Margaret suddenly stood.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“No one needs to hear more.””
My anger exploded.
“No.””
My voice echoed through the ballroom.
“I spent my entire life being the only person who didn’t know anything.””
Grandma looked at me.
“Clara.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
Tears filled her eyes.
Because she knew I was right.
My mother moved beside me.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Richard looked at the phone.
“Evelyn wants to meet.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Because of the wedding.””
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
“She planned this.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the documents scattered across the table.
“She knew I would reveal the truth tonight.””
Richard looked at her.
“How?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She contacted me months ago.””
My stomach dropped.
“You talked to her?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me things.””
“What things?””
“That Dad wasn’t honest with me.””
I stared.
“Did she tell you to hurt me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“She didn’t tell me to move your chair.””
A pause.
“I did that.””
The honesty hurt.
But it mattered.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Then why?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because I wanted Clara to finally feel what it was like to be pushed away.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my sister.
For the first time, I didn’t see a villain.
I saw someone who had spent years carrying a wound and choosing the wrong person to blame.
But there was still more.
There was always more.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a location.
*The old Hart family house. Midnight. Come alone if you want answers.*
I showed everyone.
Richard immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn is dangerous.””
My mother looked at him.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“You know what happened.””
My mother became quiet.
And that scared me.
Because everyone had been afraid of Evelyn.
Even after all these years.
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father’s last investigation was about her.””
I stared.
“What investigation?””
He hesitated.
Then opened his briefcase.
Inside was a file.
One I had never seen.
“Your father believed Evelyn had information about the events that led to your mother leaving.””
I looked at the file.
“Why didn’t he finish?””
Thomas looked down.
“Because he died before he could.””
The room went cold.
My father’s death.
My mother’s disappearance.
Vanessa’s anger.
The hidden will.
Everything was connected.
And the person at the center had just invited me to meet her.
Midnight.
Alone.
I looked at my family.
At the people who had hidden the truth.
Then I looked at the message.
And I made my decision.
“I’m going.””
Richard immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Clara—”
“I spent my whole life waiting for everyone else to decide what I should know.””
I looked at him.
“Not anymore.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Then I’m coming too.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because this started with me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel walked beside her.
“And she’s not going alone.””
For the first time that night, nobody was hiding.
Nobody was controlling the story.
But as we prepared to leave, my phone lit up one final time.
A message from Evelyn.
*Bring Vanessa.*
May you like
Then another line appeared.
*She needs to hear what your father discovered about her.*
