Chapter 11: The Man Who Vanished

Nobody breathed.

The message remained on my phone screen.

Ask Grandma why Richard disappeared for seven years.

I slowly looked at Grandma Margaret.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Grandma.””

Her hands tightened around her purse.

“I thought it was over.””

“What was over?””

Richard stepped forward.

His expression had changed.

He wasn’t confused anymore.

He was hurt.

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

And the look between them told me everything.

They had been carrying this secret together.

For years.

Daniel looked around the room.

“I feel like I’m the only person here who doesn’t know anything.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone else did.

My mother took a breath.

“Richard left because someone threatened him.””

I looked at Richard.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Grandma did.

“Me.””

The word shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

“You?””

Grandma closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was desperate.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

She sat down.

“I was terrified of losing my family.””

I looked around.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice became sharper.

“But nobody explains what that means.””

Grandma cried.

“Your father was planning to tell you everything.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“And I thought if Clara knew, she would choose Richard.””

I stared.

“She was a child.””

“I know.””

Grandma’s voice broke.

“I know now.””

That sentence hurt.

Because everyone always knew later.

Everyone regretted later.

But I was the one who lived with the consequences.

Richard spoke quietly.

“Margaret told me if I came near Clara, she would tell her that I abandoned her.””

My eyes widened.

“You threatened him?””

Grandma nodded.

“I was wrong.””

Richard looked away.

“I stayed away because I thought protecting Clara meant letting her hate me.””

I looked at him.

“You let me believe you didn’t care?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I loved you.””

I looked down.

That was the hardest part.

Everyone’s choices had been made from love.

But love had still hurt me.

My mother reached for my hand.

“I tried to come back.””

I looked at her.

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Grandma.

I understood.

Grandma had been the barrier.

But then Vanessa spoke.

“It wasn’t only Grandma.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I helped keep her away.””

My heart sank.

“You?””

She nodded.

“When Mom tried to contact you, I stopped the messages.””

My eyes filled.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked broken.

“Because I was angry.””

The room was silent.

“I thought if Clara lost everyone, she would finally understand what it felt like.””

I stared at her.

“You wanted me alone?””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“But then Dad died.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I realized I had spent my whole life trying to punish someone who never hurt me.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked at me without jealousy.

Only regret.

I didn’t know if I could forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe not for a long time.

But I saw something I had never seen before.

She finally understood.

Daniel slowly removed his wedding ring.

Not completely.

Just enough to look at it.

Vanessa noticed.

“Daniel?””

He looked at her.

“I don’t know who I married today.””

Her face collapsed.

“Please.””

“I need the truth.””

“You have it.””

“No.””

He looked at the documents.

“The truth is still incomplete.””

Everyone became quiet.

Because he was right.

There was still one question.

Why had someone sent those messages?

Who wanted these secrets revealed tonight?

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A man walked in carrying a folder.

He looked directly at Grandma.

“Margaret.””

She froze.

I had never seen him before.

But Grandma clearly knew him.

Because she whispered:

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man placed the folder on the nearest table.

“I think Clara deserves to know what you did after Richard left.””

My heart sank.

“What did she do?””

The man looked at me.

“Your grandmother didn’t just separate you from your biological father.””

He opened the folder.

“She changed your father’s will.””

Nobody moved.

Richard stepped forward.

“What?””

The man looked at him.

“She made sure Clara would inherit nothing.””

Grandma gasped.

“That’s not true.””

The man opened the folder.

“It is.””

May you like

He turned the page.

“And I have the original document to prove it.””
