Chapter 10: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the document.

The words blurred.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I didn’t want to believe them.

Guardianship Transfer Agreement.

My name.

My father’s signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

A piece of paper that existed when I was twelve years old.

A piece of paper nobody had ever told me about.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

She didn’t move.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

“I was a child.””

I shook my head.

“You were seventeen.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer made the room even quieter.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You signed a document about Clara’s custody when you were seventeen?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I didn’t understand everything.””

My mother’s expression hardened.

“You understood enough.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice broke.

“I wasn’t.””

That admission surprised me.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She was accepting her part.

“But I know what happened after.””

I looked at the document again.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Richard spoke.

“Your father found out.””

I looked at him.

“When?””

“Three days after it was signed.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because he believed Vanessa was manipulated.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“By who?””

She closed her eyes.

The answer was obvious before she spoke.

“By someone who hated your father.””

My mother nodded.

“Your grandmother.””

Everyone froze.

I turned toward Grandma Margaret.

She was sitting alone now.

Older.

Smaller.

Like the weight of the secret had finally become too heavy.

“Grandma?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

That hurt.

More than anger would have.

Because Grandma was the one person I never expected to disappoint me.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I thought I was protecting my family.””

“What family?””

My voice cracked.

“The one that lied to me?””

Grandma lowered her head.

“I was afraid Richard would take you away.””

Richard looked shocked.

“Take her away?””

“I thought if Clara knew you were her biological father, she would leave us.””

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Leave you?””

I looked around.

“At what point did anyone think about what I wanted?””

Nobody answered.

That question sat in the room.

Heavy.

My mother stepped closer.

“I did.””

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“I thought about you every day.””

I swallowed.

“But you still left.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

I looked around.

“Everyone was scared except me.””

The silence was unbearable.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you bring this out today?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

She looked down.

“I knew Clara was going to find out eventually.””

“Why the wedding?””

Her face changed.

Because that was the question.

The real question.

Why humiliate me in front of everyone?

Why choose today?

Vanessa whispered:

“Because I wanted Dad to be here.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I know he’s gone.””

Her voice broke.

“But I wanted him to see.””

“See what?””

“That I mattered too.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said the words I never expected.

“I thought if I made everyone choose between us, someone would finally choose me.””

My anger didn’t disappear.

But something changed.

I understood the wound.

Not the action.

The wound.

My father’s letter was still in my hand.

I turned the page.

There was one final paragraph.

My breath caught.

“Clara, if Vanessa ever shows you this document, please understand one thing.””

I kept reading.

“She did not create this plan because she stopped loving you.””

My eyes moved.

“She created it because someone convinced her that love was a competition.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

Then I read the final sentence.

“She was not the person who started this.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because everyone had blamed Vanessa.

But my father was saying there was someone else.

Someone behind her.

I looked at Richard.

“Who convinced her?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Grandma Margaret whispered:

“I did.””

The entire room turned.

My heart dropped.

Grandma covered her face.

“I told Vanessa that if Clara stayed, she would lose everything.””

Daniel stared.

“You told a seventeen-year-old girl to protect herself from a child?””

Grandma cried harder.

“I was grieving.””

“No,” my mother said quietly.

“You were afraid.””

Grandma looked at her.

And my mother continued.

“You were afraid that the truth would destroy the family you built.””

Grandma said nothing.

Because it was true.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was no photo.

Only words.

“Ask Grandma why Richard disappeared for seven years.””

I looked at Grandma.

Her face went pale.

May you like

Because she knew.

She knew exactly why.
