Chapter 14: The Last Secret Of My Father

The old Hart family house stood at the edge of town.

Abandoned.

Silent.

The kind of place people passed without looking.

But I couldn’t look away.

Because inside that house was the truth everyone had spent years trying to bury.

The car stopped outside.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa sat beside me.

For the first time in my life, we weren’t sitting as rivals.

We were sitting as two daughters searching for the same answer.

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t have to do this.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Yes, I do.””

Richard stood outside the car.

“Clara.””

I looked at him.

“If something feels wrong, leave.””

I nodded.

Then Vanessa and I walked toward the house together.

The door was already open.

That scared me more than a locked door would have.

Inside, the air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“I knew you would come.””

My mother froze.

“Evelyn.””

An older woman appeared at the top of the stairs.

She looked nothing like a ghost.

She looked alive.

Calm.

Prepared.

She slowly walked down.

Her eyes went directly to Vanessa.

“You look like your father.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“I don’t know you.””

“Yes, you do.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“You just don’t remember.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your father was trying to protect both of you.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Both?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father discovered something about your childhood.””

“What?””

She reached into a drawer.

And pulled out a photograph.

A young Vanessa.

A young Clara.

Together.

But I had never seen it before.

“We were friends before everything fell apart.””

Vanessa stared.

“I don’t remember this.””

“You were too young.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your father found out that someone had been manipulating your family for years.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at the doorway.

At the empty space behind us.

Then back at me.

“Your grandmother.””

My heart sank.

“Again?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was afraid of losing control.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You were told your father chose Clara over you.””

Vanessa became silent.

“But the truth was different.””

She stepped closer.

“Your father was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Evelyn placed a file on the table.

“From the consequences of what you were forced to do.””

Vanessa stared.

“What I was forced to do?””

Evelyn opened the file.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Letters.

My hands trembled.

“What are those?””

“Proof.””

She looked at me.

“Proof that Vanessa was never the person who created the custody plan.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“What?””

Evelyn pointed at the papers.

“Your grandmother created it.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She blamed you.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She made a seventeen-year-old girl sign papers she didn’t fully understand.””

Vanessa started crying.

“All these years…”

She couldn’t finish.

Because suddenly she understood.

She had spent years hating herself.

And hating me.

For something she never truly controlled.

I picked up one of the documents.

There was Grandma’s signature.

Not Vanessa’s.

Grandma’s.

My heart broke.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because your grandmother believed your father would leave the family for Richard.””

Richard.

The missing piece.

“She thought blood would destroy everything.””

I looked at the papers.

“She was wrong.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was.””

Then she reached into the file.

And pulled out one final letter.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

“Your father left this for Vanessa.””

Vanessa froze.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

She opened it.

Her hands shook.

After reading the first few lines, she collapsed into the chair.

“What does it say?””

She covered her face.

“He forgave me.””

Nobody spoke.

“He knew.””

Her voice broke.

“He knew everything.””

I looked at the letter.

“What else?””

Vanessa looked up.

“He said he was sorry he didn’t know how much pain I was carrying.””

That was the moment Vanessa finally broke.

Not from anger.

From grief.

Then Evelyn turned toward me.

“But there is one thing your father never discovered.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her face became serious.

“The reason he died.””

The room went silent.

My heartbeat became louder.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father’s death was not an accident.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked terrified.

My mother covered her mouth.

Richard stepped into the doorway.

Because he had followed us.

And when Evelyn saw him, she said:

“You were right all along.””

Richard looked confused.

“About what?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Someone in your family wanted Richard gone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

She only looked at Grandma Margaret’s photograph sitting on the shelf.

May you like

And whispered:

“The person who has been pretending to protect you.””
