Chapter 6: The Secret Lauren Never Wanted Found
Nobody moved.
The hospital bracelet sat in my father’s hand.
Tiny.
Almost weightless.
But somehow it felt heavier than anything else in the room.
I looked at Lauren.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Dad,” she whispered.
But he didn’t look away.
“Claire deserves the truth.””
James tightened his jaw.
“Someone explain.””
Dad slowly placed the bracelet on the table.
“After Michael died, Lauren became pregnant again.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“She never told you.””
I looked at Lauren.
“You had another child?””
Lauren’s lips parted.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
Dad shook his head.
“Not another child.””
He looked at me.
“Another pregnancy.””
The room went silent.
I didn’t understand.
“Then what happened?””
Dad looked down.
“Lauren lost the baby.””
I felt my anger soften for a second.
Another loss.
Another pain.
Another wound she carried.
But then Dad continued.
“And that’s when everything changed.””
Lauren looked terrified.
“Stop.””
Dad ignored her.
“She blamed herself.””
I nodded slowly.
“That makes sense.””
“No,” Dad said.
His voice was heavy.
“She didn’t just blame herself.””
I looked at him.
“She blamed other mothers.””
A chill ran through me.
Dad continued.
“She started believing that people who couldn’t protect their children didn’t deserve them.””
My eyes moved toward Lauren.
“That’s why me?””
Lauren looked away.
“At first…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“At first what?””
She swallowed.
“At first, I was just worried about you.””
I waited.
“Then I saw you struggling.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
She looked at Emma.
“And I saw a chance.””
James stepped forward.
“A chance to do what?””
Lauren didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“My entire pregnancy…”
I looked at her.
“You were waiting for me to fail?””
Lauren shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice lacked conviction.
“I was waiting for you to admit you needed help.””
“I did need help.””
That made her look up.
“I needed my sister.””
My voice cracked.
“I needed someone to hold my hand. Someone to tell me I was doing okay.””
The tears finally fell.
“Instead, you watched me struggle and turned it into evidence against me.””
Lauren started crying.
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
The words came out louder than I expected.
“I was terrified every day.””
I touched Emma’s tiny back.
“But I stayed.””
The room became silent.
“I learned.””
I looked at Lauren.
“I became a mother.””
James came beside me.
His hand found mine.
Dad looked at Lauren.
“You need help.””
She wiped her face.
“You think I’m crazy.””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“I think you’re hurt.””
His voice softened.
“But hurt people can still hurt others.””
For the first time that night, Lauren didn’t argue.
She just stood there.
Small.
Broken.
Human.
But the memory of Emma crying remained.
And I couldn’t erase it.
James opened the front door.
Cold air rushed inside.
“We’re leaving.””
I nodded.
As we stepped outside, I heard Lauren’s voice behind me.
“Claire.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered:
“There’s something Dad doesn’t know.””
My heart sank.
I slowly turned.
Lauren was holding another piece of paper.
Something she had taken from the box.
“What is that?””
She looked at Emma.
Then at me.
And the fear in her eyes returned.
“Before tonight…”
She swallowed.
“I wasn’t trying to take Emma away from you.””
James narrowed his eyes.
“Then what were you trying to do?””
Lauren looked down at the paper.
“I was trying to stop someone else from taking her.””
I froze.
“What?””
Nobody spoke.
Not my mother.
Not my father.
Not even James.
Lauren slowly unfolded the paper.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because someone has been watching your daughter since the day she was born.””
