Chapter 13: The Record That Changed Everything

I stared at the hospital record on my phone until the words stopped looking real.

My father’s signature.

The date Michael died.

A cold feeling moved through my entire body.

James noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the document carefully.

Then he looked at me.

“Claire…”

“I don’t understand.””

My voice sounded distant.

“My dad said he didn’t know everything.””

James didn’t answer.

Because he knew what I was thinking.

Someone had lied.

Again.

I called my father immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

“Claire.””

His voice already sounded broken.

“What is this?””

Silence.

Then:

“I was hoping you would never see that.””

My heart sank.

“You signed Michael’s hospital record.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father took a long breath.

“Come back.””

I looked at James.

He shook his head slightly.

But I already knew.

We needed answers.

Not more secrets.

“We’re coming.””

The drive back to my parents’ house felt different.

The place that had once been my childhood home now felt like a building full of locked doors.

When we arrived, everyone was there.

My parents.

Lauren.

Even David.

The moment I saw my uncle, anger rushed through me.

“You.””

David looked older than I remembered.

Not weaker.

Just tired.

“I know you’re angry.””

“You watched my daughter.””

His face changed.

“I was trying to protect her.””

James stepped forward.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

David lowered his eyes.

“I deserve that.””

Dad stood in the middle of the room.

“Everyone sits.””

Nobody argued.

We gathered around the same Christmas table where everything had started.

The same table where Lauren hurt Emma.

The same table where my family finally began telling the truth.

Dad placed the hospital record down.

“I signed this because Michael was transferred into my care.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Lauren looked at him.

“Dad…”

He looked at her.

“She doesn’t know.””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“The truth about Michael’s last day.””

The room went silent.

“Tell me.””

Dad looked at Lauren.

“She was not there.””

Lauren’s face changed.

“What?””

Dad nodded.

“She was sick. She had collapsed from exhaustion. The doctors wouldn’t let her stay.””

I looked confused.

“Then who was with Michael?””

Nobody answered.

Then David spoke.

“I was.””

My blood ran cold.

“You?””

David nodded.

“I was the one who signed the emergency paperwork.””

James stared at him.

“Why?””

David looked ashamed.

“Because nobody else was there.””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought…”

She couldn’t finish.

My father continued.

“Michael’s condition worsened quickly. The doctors tried everything.””

Lauren covered her mouth.

“And I wasn’t there.””

“No,” Dad said softly.

“You weren’t.””

The pain on her face was unbearable.

But then Dad looked at me.

“And that’s where everything went wrong.””

I waited.

“After Michael died, David told Lauren something.””

Everyone looked at him.

David lowered his head.

“I told her she needed to accept that she wasn’t ready to be a mother.””

Lauren’s face twisted.

“You said I killed him.””

David closed his eyes.

“I was wrong.””

My chest tightened.

All these years.

All this pain.

Built around words spoken to a grieving teenager.

Dad looked at David.

“You planted the idea that she was dangerous.””

David nodded.

“I know.””

“And then years later,” Dad continued, “you saw Claire struggling after Emma was born.””

I looked at David.

“And you thought I was the same?””

David looked away.

“I saw history repeating.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“You saw a tired mother.””

I pointed toward myself.

“You saw someone scared.””

Then I touched my chest.

“But you decided that meant I was a threat.””

David said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

Lauren started crying.

“I spent years believing I destroyed Michael.””

She looked at me.

“And then when you had Emma, I thought…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Lauren wiped her face.

“I thought if I could save Emma, maybe I could forgive myself.””

The room became quiet.

I understood then.

Not the actions.

Not the choices.

But the wound behind them.

Everyone had been trying to fix their own pain by controlling my life.

Dad reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For hiding everything.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then David’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked down.

And his face changed.

“What?””

James noticed.

“Who is it?””

David slowly stood.

“No.””

He stared at the screen.

May you like

Then whispered:

“She found us.””
