Chapter 14: The Woman Who Started It All
Nobody moved.
David’s phone continued ringing.
The name on the screen was visible.
Evelyn.
Lauren went pale.
“No.””
David answered.
Nobody spoke.
We only listened to the fear spreading across his face.
“Evelyn?””
A pause.
Then his expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
James stepped closer.
David put the phone on speaker.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“You all finally figured it out.””
Lauren’s eyes widened.
“Evelyn.””
The woman laughed softly.
“I knew you would.””
My stomach tightened.
James looked at me.
I whispered:
“She’s the one.””
The woman continued.
“David, you disappointed me.””
David clenched his jaw.
“This ends now.””
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
Lauren stepped forward.
“Why?””
Silence.
Then Evelyn answered.
“Because I was right.””
My skin crawled.
“About what?””
“That children deserve better than people who are too weak to protect them.””
I looked at Emma’s empty car seat.
My anger returned.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
The woman laughed.
“Claire.””
My blood froze.
She knew my name.
“I know everything.””
James moved closer to me.
“How?””
Evelyn ignored him.
“I know when you cried after Emma’s first fever.””
I felt sick.
“I know when you called Lauren because you thought you were failing.””
My eyes moved to my sister.
Lauren looked devastated.
“She was listening.””
The woman continued.
“I know every moment you doubted yourself.””
My hands shook.
“Why?””
The answer came instantly.
“Because doubt is where people become vulnerable.””
Nobody spoke.
David looked furious.
“You manipulated all of us.””
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice remained calm.
“I showed you the truth.””
“You destroyed my family.””
David’s voice cracked.
“You used my grief.””
A pause.
Then Evelyn said something unexpected.
“You let your grief destroy yourself.””
The room went silent.
Because for a moment, even David had no response.
Lauren stepped closer to the phone.
“Why Emma?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because Emma is special.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
James grabbed the phone.
“You stay away from my daughter.””
The woman laughed.
“James.””
He froze.
“How do you know my name?””
“Because I know Claire.””
The call suddenly became silent.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“You should ask your wife why she never told you about the hospital.””
I looked at James.
His face changed.
“What is she talking about?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then James looked at me.
“Claire.””
His voice was quiet.
“What hospital?””
I felt panic rising.
“I don’t know.””
But deep down…
I knew.
There was one more secret.
One more thing everyone had hidden.
James looked hurt.
Not angry.
Just hurt.
“How many things don’t I know?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know either.
Then my father’s phone buzzed.
A message.
From Evelyn.
Dad read it.
And his face went white.
“What?””
He handed the phone to me.
One sentence.
Ask Claire about the night she almost lost Emma.
I stared at the screen.
The room blurred.
Because there was only one night I had never told anyone about.
May you like
The night I thought I was going to lose my daughter.
And the night I made a promise I never broke.
