Chapter 2: The Secret My Parents Buried
I couldn’t move.
The words hung in the air like smoke.
Lauren tried to laugh.
“Dad, stop.””
But there was something different in her voice.
Fear.
I stared at my father.
“What did you just say?””
My mother stood up quickly.
“Claire, don’t listen to this. Everyone is emotional right now.””
James stepped between me and my family.
“No,” he said firmly.
“She’s going to listen.””
Dad looked down at the floor.
For years, I had seen my father as the strongest person in the family. He was the man who fixed broken fences, carried heavy furniture alone, and never admitted when anything hurt him.
But that night, standing in the doorway of his own house, he looked defeated.
“Claire,” he said, “I should have told you months ago.””
My stomach dropped.
“Months ago about what?””
Lauren stepped forward.
“Dad is confused. He’s upset because James embarrassed me.””
James turned toward her.
“Embarrassed you?””
His voice was quiet.
“You hit a baby.””
Lauren’s face hardened.
“She was crying because Claire has no control over her.””
I felt Emma’s tiny body tense against me.
That was when I knew.
This wasn’t an accident.
This was something deeper.
I looked at my father.
“Tell me the truth.””
Dad closed his eyes.
Then he walked back to the dining table and picked up a small envelope from beside his plate.
“I found this six weeks ago.””
He handed it to me.
My hands felt cold as I opened it.
Inside was a printed email.
I read the first few lines.
And my heart stopped.
It was from Lauren.
To a parenting support agency.
The message was about me.
About Emma.
My eyes moved across the words.
“She’s not stable enough to raise a child.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
I kept reading.
Lauren had written that I was overwhelmed, that I was “too emotional,” and that Emma would have a better life with someone who “understood children.””
My fingers began shaking.
“She was trying to report me?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“She asked about becoming Emma’s guardian.””
The room spun.
I looked at Lauren.
“You wanted my daughter?””
Lauren’s face changed.
For the first time all night, she looked caught.
“I was trying to help.””
“Help?””
My voice broke.
“You told strangers I was an unfit mother.””
“You were struggling!””
Lauren shouted.
The sudden anger in her voice made Emma start whimpering again.
James immediately took a step forward.
“Lower your voice.””
Lauren ignored him.
“You don’t understand, Claire. Everyone saw it. You were exhausted.
You cried all the time after Emma was born. You didn’t know what you were doing.””
I stared at her.
Because those words were true in the cruelest way.
I had struggled.
After Emma was born, I barely slept. I was scared of every little sound my baby made. I cried when I couldn’t calm her down.
But I never stopped loving her.
I never stopped protecting her.
“I needed my sister,” I whispered.
Lauren looked away.
“You needed someone capable.””
The sentence hurt more than the slap.
My mother finally spoke.
“Lauren only wanted what was best.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
My chest tightened.
“You both knew?””
Mom’s eyes filled with tears.
“We thought it would pass.””
“Pass?””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You let my sister build a case against me and waited for it to disappear?””
Dad looked ashamed.
“I stopped her.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
He took a shaky breath.
“I told her if she ever tried anything legal against you, I would testify against her.””
Lauren’s face went pale.
“You threatened me.””
“No,” Dad replied.
“I warned you.””
The room became silent again.
James looked at me.
“We’re leaving.””
I nodded.
I didn’t want to stay another second.
But as I turned toward the door, Lauren suddenly spoke.
“You think you know everything?””
I stopped.
Her voice had changed.
It wasn’t angry anymore.
It was desperate.
“You don’t know why I wanted Emma.””
I slowly turned around.
“Then tell me.””
Lauren looked at my father.
And Dad looked terrified.
Because whatever came next was something he had been trying to hide.
May you like
Lauren whispered:
“Ask Dad why he never told you the truth about the day Emma was born.””
