Chapter 12: The Plan Hidden for Years
The drive home felt endless.
Snow covered the road, but James drove carefully.
Neither of us spoke.
Emma slept in her car seat behind us, unaware that our entire world had shifted.
I kept looking at her through the mirror.
My daughter.
My reason.
The person everyone seemed determined to control.
“Claire.””
I looked at James.
“I’m scared.””
He reached over and held my hand.
“I know.””
“What if someone really thinks they can take her?””
His jaw tightened.
“Then they’ll have to go through me.””
I believed him.
But fear didn’t disappear.
Because this wasn’t a stranger.
This was family.
When we arrived home, James checked every window.
Every door.
Every room.
Then he stopped at the nursery.
The picture from the message haunted me.
Someone had stood there.
Someone had watched our daughter.
James looked at the crib.
“We’re not staying here tonight.””
I nodded.
As he packed a bag, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I stared at it.
James looked over.
“Don’t answer.””
But I did.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
“Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
“Uncle David?””
A pause.
Then a sigh.
“I was hoping we could talk before things got worse.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Were you in my house?””
Another pause.
The silence was an answer.
“Why?””
His voice became softer.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
“I’m trying to protect Emma.””
The same words.
Again.
Everyone used the same words.
“By spying on my child?””
“By preventing a tragedy.””
My heart raced.
“What tragedy?””
David was quiet.
Then he said:
“The same one that happened to Michael.””
I froze.
“You knew about Michael?””
“I was there.””
The room spun.
“What does that mean?””
David sighed.
“Lauren was never the only one who blamed herself.””
I felt sick.
“What did you do?””
“I tried to stop history from repeating.””
James was now standing beside me, listening.
“Tell him to meet us,” James whispered.
I shook my head.
But David spoke again.
“You should ask your father why he never told you the full truth about Michael’s death.””
My breath caught.
“What are you talking about?””
David lowered his voice.
“Because your father knows exactly why Michael died.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
James looked at me.
“Claire.””
I could barely speak.
“My father…”
Then my phone buzzed again.
A message.
This time from Dad.
Only four words.
We need to talk.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A hospital record.
Michael’s name was at the top.
And below it was a signature.
May you like
My father’s signature.
Dated the day Michael died.
