Chapter 8: They Used My Daughter's Name
“Absolutely not.””
My father's voice cut through the living room.
“Robert, stop every pending transaction connected to that application. Notify the trustees and preserve the records. Nobody touches a single document until the investigators review it.””
“I've already contacted the bank's fraud department,” Robert replied.
“The application has been flagged, but I need to explain something about the paperwork.””
I could barely breathe.
“What did they do with Lily's name?”” I asked.
Robert answered carefully.
“The application identifies Lily as the intended beneficiary of a newly established trust. It also lists Sarah as the person authorizing the transfer.””
“I never authorized anything.””
“I know. The signature requires verification, and the trustees have not approved the transaction.””
My father stood beside the coffee table, his phone pressed to his ear.
“Who submitted it?””
“We're tracing the filing. The documents appear to have been prepared by the same office that handled Daniel's loan.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“James,” she whispered.
My father turned toward her.
“Do you know something about this application?””
She hesitated.
“James talked about putting the money into a trust for Lily. He said it would make the transfer look legitimate because it would be presented as a way to protect her future.””
I stared at her.
“Protect her future?””
“He told Daniel that Richard would have difficulty objecting to an arrangement that benefited his own granddaughter.””
My hands curled into fists.
“They used my child as an excuse to steal from her.””
Vanessa nodded miserably.
I stood so quickly that the coffee table rattled.
“I want to see the application.””
Robert emailed the document to my father, who opened it on his tablet.
The first page listed Lily's full name and date of birth.
The second contained a summary of the proposed transfer.
The third included my signature.
It was a convincing imitation. Whoever had copied it had reproduced the shape of the letters, the curve of the final stroke, and even the small mark I sometimes made when lifting my pen.
But beneath the signature was a detail that made my stomach turn.
The application stated that I had requested the trust because I was concerned about my own financial stability and wanted to ensure that Lily's inheritance would be protected from future marital disputes.
It made me sound frightened, helpless, and willing to surrender control of my money.
It also made the entire arrangement appear reasonable.
“That's disgusting,” I whispered.
My father put an arm around my shoulders.
“They're trying to create a paper trail that supports their version of events.””
“But if the bank had approved it—”
“It didn't,” he said firmly.
“And we will make sure the investigators understand that you never authorized this.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Does Lily know?””
“No,” my father replied.
“And she doesn't need to carry the burden of this investigation.””
I nodded.
She had already seen enough.
An officer approached and asked to review the application. My father handed over the tablet, and the officer began documenting the relevant details.
Vanessa sat with her head bowed.
I turned toward her.
“Did Daniel know they were using Lily's name?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a blow.
“How do you know?””
“I heard him talking to James two nights ago. Daniel said the bank might question the application because the signatures looked too similar to the originals. James told him not to worry because the trustees would be pressured to approve it once the transfer request was supported by the company documents.””
My father stepped forward.
“Did you record that conversation?””
“No.””
“Did you send any messages about it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I might have.””
She pulled out her phone.
“I was afraid of James. I started saving some of our messages because I thought I might need proof if he blamed me for everything.””
She opened a conversation and placed the phone on the table.
The messages were dated over several weeks.
One from James read:
The child's trust is the cleanest route. Sarah signs nothing, but the paperwork must look complete.
Daniel had responded:
And if Richard asks questions?
James's reply was chillingly casual.
He'll assume you're protecting your family. By the time he realizes what's happened, the money will be beyond his immediate reach.
I read the messages again.
My father leaned over the phone.
“Send copies to the investigators and preserve the original conversation.””
Vanessa followed his instructions.
Then she looked at me.
“I know you can't forgive me.””
I didn't answer.
“I thought I could fix this before anyone got hurt. I thought Daniel would leave you, take his share, and disappear from our lives. I didn't think he would become violent.””
I looked at her.
“You knew he was willing to steal from me. What made you believe he would suddenly become an honorable man?””
She had no answer.
My father ended the silence.
“Vanessa, you need to cooperate fully. If you withheld information, now is the time to disclose it.””
She nodded.
“There's something else. James has been telling Daniel that Richard's company is about to collapse.””
My father frowned.
“That's nonsense.””
“I know. But Daniel believed him. James said that if the company lost enough value, Sarah's inheritance would be the only reliable source of money left in the family.””
Robert, still on speaker, interrupted.
“Richard, that may explain the unusual transactions we found in the company accounts.””
“What transactions?””
“Payments to consultants who appear to have no employees, no operating offices, and no verifiable services. We're checking whether those payments were legitimate.””
My father exhaled slowly.
“James has been using the company to finance this operation.””
“We can't confirm that yet,” Robert said.
“But the records justify a full review.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where does Daniel think the money is now?””
“In a private account that James controls through a holding company.””
“Then why did he demand fifty thousand dollars from me today?””
“Because James promised him that the trust transfer would be completed this morning. When the bank stopped it, Daniel panicked. He thought you had told Richard something.””
I remembered Daniel grabbing my hair, screaming about the money, and forcing my head toward the sink.
He hadn't been angry because I had betrayed him.
He had been angry because the plan was failing.
And when he couldn't control the bank, the paperwork, or my father, he had tried to control me.
My hands began to shake.
My father noticed and guided me to the sofa.
“Breathe, Sarah.””
I inhaled slowly.
Then I looked up at him.
“Dad, I want a divorce.””
He nodded.
“Then we'll find you a good attorney who represents your interests alone.””
“I don't want you to fight my battles for me.””
He studied me, then smiled sadly.
“I'm not going to take your choices away from you. I'll support whatever you decide.””
For the first time in years, I felt that my decisions belonged to me.
I wasn't going to remain in a marriage because I feared what would happen if I left.
I wasn't going to accept apologies that changed nothing.
And I wasn't going to let Daniel convince Lily that love meant enduring fear.
An officer returned with an update.
“Mrs. Bennett, we've documented your statement and the information concerning the financial records. We're also following up on the reported assault. We'll need to speak with Daniel further.””
I nodded.
“Will he be allowed to come near Lily?””
“Any restrictions will depend on the applicable legal process and the decisions made by the authorities. You should discuss immediate safety arrangements with your attorney. In the meantime, keep a record of any contact or threats.””
My father assured the officer that we would cooperate.
Then he turned toward Marcus.
“Please prepare the guest suite at my house. Sarah and Lily will stay there tonight.””
I looked at him.
“Dad, I don't want to become another problem you have to manage.””
He took my hand.
“You are not a problem. Neither is Lily. You are my family.””
I began to cry again.
Not because I was frightened this time.
Because I finally believed I didn't have to face everything alone.
As Marcus helped Lily bring down her belongings, I returned to the coffee table to collect the papers.
Something slipped from between the pages of the trust application.
A small folded note.
I opened it.
The handwriting was Daniel's.
Once the transfer clears, James gets the account records. Vanessa gets the house. I get enough to start over somewhere new.
Beneath it was another sentence.
Sarah will never find out what happened to her biological father.
I stared at the words.
Then I handed the note to my father.
He read it, his expression darkening.
“Robert,” he said into the phone, “we have another document that may be relevant. I'm sending it to the investigators.””
I looked at the final line.
Daniel hadn't merely planned to steal my inheritance.
He had planned to disappear afterward, leaving me with a broken marriage, a threatened home, and a daughter whose name had been used without permission.
But the reference to my biological father troubled me most.
What had James hidden?
And why did Daniel believe that keeping me ignorant of my father's past was essential to the plan?
Before I could ask, my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
The message contained a photograph of an old document bearing my mother's signature.

Below it were nine words.
Ask Richard why he never told you who your father was.
