Chapter 13: The Money Vanessa Was Paid to Hide

I read the message three times before I showed it to my father.

You found the reconciliation. Good. Now ask Vanessa who actually transferred the $250,000.

She knows why Daniel needed the money before tomorrow morning.

My father took my phone, photographed the message, and handed it back.

“Don't reply,” he said.

“Robert needs to see this, and the investigators need to know someone is following our movements.””

I looked across the parking lot.

Cars moved along the road beyond the storage facility. A delivery truck backed toward another building. An elderly man pushed a shopping cart toward his car.

Everything looked ordinary.

That was what frightened me.

Someone knew what we had found. Someone knew about the transfer. And someone had decided that warning me anonymously was safer than speaking openly.

“Why tomorrow morning?”” I asked.

“We'll find out.””

Robert arranged for the message to be included in the investigation. He also confirmed that the $250,000 transfer had been made through an account connected to a financial services company used by Daniel's business.

The account bore my name, but the transaction had been authorized electronically.

I had never approved it.

By late afternoon, Robert had identified a second link: the account had been accessed using a device registered to Daniel's office.

“That doesn't prove Daniel initiated the transfer,” Robert cautioned over the phone.

“But it gives the investigators a specific lead to examine.””

My father paced his study.

“Then we find out who did.””

I sat at the desk, looking at the old photograph of my mother that we had brought home from the storage facility. She was smiling at the camera, holding me against her chest.

I wondered whether she had known how many people would eventually try to use my name.

A knock interrupted my thoughts.

Marcus entered.

“Vanessa Cole is at the gate. She says she'll only speak to Sarah.””

My father immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

I stood.

“Dad, if she knows something about that transfer, I need to hear it.””

“You don't owe her another conversation.””

“No. But Lily deserves a future that isn't controlled by secrets, and I need to know what these people have done.””

Robert joined us by video call.

“If Vanessa agrees to provide information, we can arrange a recorded interview with the investigators present. That would be safer and more useful than an informal confrontation.””

I looked at my father.

“Please.””

He studied my face before finally nodding.

“Only with the investigators here.””

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa entered the study accompanied by two officers.

She looked different from the woman I had known for fifteen years. Her designer coat was wrinkled, her makeup had nearly disappeared, and she kept glancing toward the door as though expecting someone to appear behind her.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“Sarah.””

“Don't say my name like we're still friends.””

She swallowed.

“I know.””

“Do you know about the $250,000 transfer?””

Her eyes flickered toward the officers.

“Yes.””

My father stepped forward.

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa sat down.

“Daniel told me he needed to move the money before the divorce documents were finalized. He said it was temporary, that the account would be restored, and that no one would lose anything.””

I stared at her.

“Did you make the transfer?””

“No. I helped arrange it.””

“How?””

She pressed her hands together.

“I introduced Daniel to a financial consultant who handled transactions for James's holding company. I knew the money was connected to your inheritance, but Daniel told me you had already agreed to the arrangement.””

“You knew he had forged my signature.””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I suspected it. I didn't want to believe it.””

“You suspected it when he had already hurt me? When my daughter was afraid to sleep?””

“I didn't know he would hit you.””

“You knew he was willing to steal from me.””

She had no answer.

The officers asked her to continue.

Vanessa explained that Daniel had been under increasing pressure from James. The company had borrowed heavily, and the $600,000 loan was approaching a critical deadline. James had promised to cover the shortfall if Daniel could demonstrate that Sarah's inheritance was about to become available.

But the fraudulent trust application had been flagged.

Without access to my inheritance, Daniel couldn't satisfy the arrangement.

“So he moved the $250,000 to buy time,” I said.

Vanessa nodded.

“He thought he could replace it before anyone noticed.””

“Replace it with what?””

She looked at the floor.

“The money from the company sale.””

My father went still.

“What company sale?””

Vanessa glanced at the officers, then at me.

“James was preparing to sell a controlling interest in the Bennett investment company to an outside buyer. He intended to use the proceeds to settle certain liabilities before the financial records were reviewed.””

My father stared at her.

“He can't sell shares he doesn't own.””

“He wasn't planning to sell your personal shares,” Vanessa said.

“He was arranging a transaction involving a subsidiary and voting rights he claimed to control.””

Robert's voice came through the speaker.

“Who is the buyer?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“An investment group called Northbridge Capital.””

Robert asked her to spell the name.

Then he went silent for several seconds.

“What?”” I asked.

“The name appears in the preliminary documents we recovered,” he said.

“But we haven't yet verified the buyer's role or the final terms.””

Vanessa reached into her bag and removed a flash drive.

“I have copies of the communications. I kept them because James told Daniel to destroy everything once the sale was completed.””

My father didn't touch it.

“Why should we believe you now?””

“You shouldn't,” she replied.

“That's why I brought the messages.””

She placed the drive on the table.

One of the officers secured it as evidence.

Vanessa looked at me.

“There is something else. Daniel was supposed to meet James tonight. They planned to finalize the transaction before the company board met tomorrow morning.””

“Where?””

“At the Whitmore offices.””

“Why did you come here?””

“Because James found out I had kept the messages. He called me this morning and told me I had one chance to stay out of prison.””

My father leaned forward.

“Did he threaten you?””

“He told me that if I didn't cooperate, he would make sure the financial records showed I had organized the transfers.””

I looked at her.

“So you finally became afraid of the same man you helped.””

Vanessa nodded, tears running down her face.

“Yes.””

For a moment, I remembered our college days, the nights she had slept on my couch, the birthday parties, the promises that we would always protect each other.

Then I remembered her standing beside Daniel while my life fell apart.

“Why did you help him marry me?”” I asked.

She closed her eyes.

“Because I wanted Daniel to choose me. When James offered me a way back into Daniel's life, I convinced myself that helping him was worth it.””

“And after he married me?””

“I kept telling myself it would end once he got the money.””

“But it didn't.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You can tell the investigators everything. You can provide every message, every account number, every name. But don't ask me to make you feel better about what you did.””

“I won't.””

As the officers prepared to leave with Vanessa, my father received a call from Robert.

He listened, his expression hardening.

Then he turned toward me.

“The board has received an emergency request to approve a transfer of voting rights tomorrow morning.””

“From James?””

“Yes.””

“What happens if they approve it?””

“He could gain enough influence to force a sale of the subsidiary before the investigators finish reviewing the records.””

I looked at the photograph of my mother on the desk.

All those years, she had tried to preserve the truth.

Now the people who had buried it were racing to finish what they started.

“Then we stop the vote,” I said.

My father nodded.

“We'll bring the evidence to the board.””

Robert interrupted.

“There's one problem. The request includes a document bearing Sarah's signature, stating that she consents to the transfer.””

My stomach dropped.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know,” Robert replied.

“But the document is dated today.””

And at the bottom of the page, someone had written a sentence that made my blood run cold.

The beneficiary's consent has been independently verified.
