Chapter 6: The Divorce He Planned Before I Knew I Was Betrayed
The draft divorce agreement lay on the coffee table between my father and me.
Tomorrow morning.
That was when Daniel had planned to begin dismantling my life.
I stared at the printed pages, reading each clause until the words blurred together. According to the document, I would leave the marriage without a claim to his business, the marital property, or any financial compensation.
The inheritance my mother had protected for me was listed separately.
Daniel intended to keep that, too.
“He was planning to divorce me?”” I whispered.
My father sat beside me.
“He was planning to make sure you had as little leverage as possible.””
I shook my head.
“But yesterday, he told me we should take Lily to the mountains next month. He said we needed time together.””
“People can tell you what you want to hear while preparing to do something entirely different.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
For years, I had believed Daniel's promises because I wanted our family to work. When he apologized, I accepted it. When he blamed his temper on business pressure, I gave him space. When he said he was trying to build a better future for Lily, I believed him.
Now I wondered how many of those moments had been carefully chosen to keep me from asking questions.
My father placed a hand over mine.
“You don't have to decide anything about your marriage tonight.””
“I already know I can't stay with him.””
He nodded.
“Then we will make sure you and Lily are safe.””
Across the room, the police officer finished speaking with Daniel and entered the living room.
“Mrs. Bennett, we'd like to confirm a few details about the financial documents.””
I sat up straighter.
“Of course.””
He opened his notebook.
“Did your husband ever ask you to sign blank forms or provide copies of your identification for business purposes?””
“Yes. Several times.””
“When?””
“Over the last six months. He said the company needed updated records because he was applying for financing.””
“Did you sign anything?””
“I signed some ordinary paperwork, but I never signed a trust authorization transferring my inheritance.””
The officer made a note.
“Do you have access to the accounts in your name?””
“Some of them. Daniel handled most of the financial arrangements after we married.””
My father turned toward me.
“Sarah, did you know he had access to the inheritance documents?””
“No. I thought the account was protected by the estate's trustees.””
Robert's voice came through the phone.
“It was. The attempted transfer required additional verification, which is why the bank stopped it.””
The officer nodded.
“That information will be important. We'll document the suspected forgery and request the relevant records through the proper channels.””
I took a breath.
“What happens to Daniel now?””
“That depends on the evidence and the decisions made by the appropriate authorities. We'll complete our investigation and determine what action is warranted.””
I appreciated that he didn't promise an outcome he couldn't guarantee.
As the officer left to speak with another member of the team, my father turned to Robert.
“Contact the estate trustees. I want every authorization reviewed, and I want confirmation that no further transfer can proceed without Sarah's direct, independently verified consent.””
“Already in progress,” Robert replied.
“And preserve the original records. Nothing gets altered, deleted, or moved.””
“Understood.””
I looked at my father.
“Dad, what if Daniel has already moved some of the money?””
“Then we'll trace it.””
“What if the company is in worse trouble than we think?””
“Then we find out the truth.””
He squeezed my hand.
“We're not going to solve every problem tonight, Sarah. But we can stop pretending there isn't a problem.””
For the first time that afternoon, I felt the ground beneath me become slightly more solid.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Mommy?””
Lily stood beside the doorway, holding her pink backpack.
I opened my arms.
She hurried toward me and climbed onto the sofa.
“Are we going home?”” she asked.
I brushed her hair behind her ear.
“This is our home, sweetheart. But we're going to stay somewhere else for a little while.””
“Because Daddy is mad?””
“Because we need somewhere safe and quiet.””
She thought about that.
“Can I bring my stuffed rabbit?””
“Of course.””
“And my purple pajamas?””
I smiled through my tears.
“And your purple pajamas.””
She rested her head against my shoulder.
“Can Grandpa come, too?””
My father laughed softly.
“I'll be right there, sweetheart.””
She reached for his hand.
“Good. Because you make me feel safe.””
My father turned his face away for a moment.
I knew why.
He had spent his life building businesses, protecting investments, and negotiating with people who believed they could intimidate him. But nothing had prepared him for the knowledge that his granddaughter had been frightened inside her own home.
He kissed her forehead.
“You never have to be brave all by yourself.””
A little later, Marcus helped us gather a few things. Lily packed her favorite books and stuffed rabbit, while I collected identification documents, medication, and the photographs I couldn't bear to leave behind.
I paused in our bedroom.
The room looked exactly as it had that morning.
The cream curtains were half-open. My jewelry box sat on the dresser. A framed photograph of Daniel, Lily, and me rested beside the lamp.
In the picture, Daniel was smiling with one arm around my shoulders.
I remembered that day at the lake. Lily had been four, and Daniel had spent an hour teaching her to skip stones. He had carried her on his shoulders afterward, letting her squeal with delight whenever she reached for the clouds.
Had that man ever existed?
Or had I simply chosen to believe in him because the alternative was too painful?
I lifted the photograph.
Then I turned it face down.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa appeared on the screen.
Sarah, please call me. I know you're upset, but Daniel isn't telling you the whole story.
I stared at the message.
She had been in my bedroom, writing my name on documents. She had helped establish the private company that received Daniel's loan. She had stood beside him while he planned to claim my inheritance.
And now she wanted to explain herself.
I typed one question.
Why were you in my bedroom yesterday?
Her reply arrived almost immediately.
Because I was trying to help you.
I almost laughed.
Then another message appeared.
You need to understand that Daniel was desperate. James told us the money would be released legally, and nobody would get hurt.
My hands began to shake.
Nobody would get hurt.
I thought of the kitchen sink. The shattered glass. Lily crying on the floor.
I typed back.
You knew he was hurting me?
This time, she didn't answer immediately.
The typing indicator appeared, disappeared, then returned.
Finally, a message arrived.
I didn't know he would do that to you.
I stared at the screen.
It wasn't an apology.
It was an attempt to separate herself from the consequences.
Before I could respond, another message came through.
There's something Daniel hasn't told you about the divorce agreement. Ask him why the house was transferred into a company last month.
I stopped breathing.
I read it twice.
The house.
Our home.
The place where Lily had learned to walk, where I had celebrated birthdays, where I had believed my family was safe.
I hurried downstairs with the phone in my hand.
“Dad!””
He looked up immediately.
“What happened?””
I showed him Vanessa's message.
He read it, then called Robert.
“Check the property records for Sarah's home. I want the ownership history, every recent filing, and the identity of anyone who authorized a transfer.””
Robert responded, “I'll get the records.””
My father looked at me.
“Did you sign anything relating to the house?””
“No.””
“Did Daniel ever tell you he was changing the ownership structure?””
“No.””
My stomach twisted.
“Dad, can he take the house from us?””
“We're going to establish what was filed and whether it was valid. Don't assume the worst before we have the records.””
He was trying to reassure me, but I could hear the tension in his voice.
A few minutes later, Robert called back.
“I found the filing.””
My father put the call on speaker.
“The property was transferred into a limited liability company four weeks ago,” Robert explained.
“The filing lists Daniel as the manager.””
I covered my mouth.
“Who signed the transfer?””
“Daniel signed on behalf of the company. But there's a second document attached.””
My father leaned toward the phone.
“What document?””
“A spousal consent form.””
I shook my head.
“I never signed a spousal consent form.””
Robert paused.
“Richard, the form contains Sarah's signature.””
The room seemed to go silent around me.
“Is it forged?”” my father asked.
“I can't determine that from a scan. It needs to be examined properly. But there's another concern.””
“What is it?””
“The company that now owns the property has an outstanding loan secured against its assets.””
My father closed his eyes.
“How much?””
“Six hundred thousand dollars.””
The same amount as Daniel's loan from Vanessa.
I gripped the back of a chair.
“Does that mean we could lose the house?””
“It means we need to investigate the loan, the property transfer, and the documents supporting both. We cannot assume the transfer is valid simply because it was recorded.””
My father thanked Robert and ended the call.
I stared at the floor.
Daniel hadn't just planned to divorce me.
He had quietly moved our home into a company, borrowed against its assets, and prepared a divorce agreement that would leave me with no claim to the business or the property.
All while telling me we were building a future together.
Then Marcus appeared in the doorway.
“Mr. Bennett, there's someone outside asking to speak with Sarah.””
My father stood.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Vanessa Cole.””
My blood ran cold.
“She came here?””
“She says she has evidence concerning the financial transactions. She also says she won't speak to anyone except Sarah.””
My father looked at me.
“You don't have to see her.””
I thought of Lily upstairs, packing her stuffed rabbit into a bag because her father had frightened her.
I thought of my mother's letter, my forged signature, and the house that might no longer legally belong to us.
Then I picked up my phone.
“I want to hear what she has to say.””
My father studied my face before nodding.
“Then we do it here, with the officers present.””
Marcus returned to the front door.
A moment later, Vanessa entered the living room.
Her mascara was smeared, her hands were shaking, and she clutched a thick envelope against her chest.
She looked at me.
“Sarah, I know you hate me.””
I didn't answer.
She placed the envelope on the table.
“But if you want to understand why Daniel married you, you need to read what's inside.””
My father stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa swallowed hard.
May you like
Then she looked directly at me and delivered the words that made my knees weaken.
“Daniel didn't marry you because he loved you, Sarah. He married you because of your mother's inheritance—and James has proof that the marriage was part of a plan that began before your wedding.””
