Chapter 7: My Marriage Was Part of Their Plan
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.
Vanessa stood in my living room, clutching the envelope as though it contained something alive.
“Say that again,” I whispered.
She swallowed.
“Daniel knew about your inheritance before he proposed.””
My father stepped between us.
“Be very careful, Vanessa. If you're making an accusation, you need to support it with evidence.””
“I have evidence.”” She pushed the envelope across the table.
“Emails, financial records, and a copy of a document James kept in his private office.””
I didn't touch it.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Because I know what happened to you today. And because I helped make it possible.””
The admission hung between us.
My father gestured toward the chair opposite him.
“Sit down. You're going to explain everything.””
Vanessa sat, keeping her handbag in her lap. An officer remained nearby, listening while another documented the materials she had brought.
I opened the envelope.
The first page was a printed email dated eight years earlier, six months before Daniel proposed to me.
The sender was James Whitmore.
The recipient was Daniel.
The subject line read: *Eleanor's Estate.*
My fingers went numb.
The message was brief.
You have an opportunity that won't come twice. Sarah is the only beneficiary of the protected account. Richard controls the family investment company, but he doesn't control her inheritance. If you want access to the money, you must build a legitimate relationship with her first.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“How did you get this?””
“James kept copies of everything. He believes that if he documents his instructions, he can always prove that other people acted independently.””
My father picked up the page.
“That is not how this works.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you participate?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Because I was in love with Daniel.””
The words made my stomach twist.
She looked at me through wet eyes.
“I met him before you did. We were together for almost a year.””
I stared at her.
“You dated my husband?””
“Before you met him.””
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me he was going to end it. He said he wanted a stable life, and that James had encouraged him to meet you.””
My father placed the email on the table.
“Encouraged him to meet her for what purpose?””
Vanessa's voice became smaller.
“To get close to the inheritance.””
I felt something inside me collapse.
The first date Daniel had taken me on had been at a little Italian restaurant near Piedmont Park. He had remembered that I disliked roses because they reminded me of my mother's funeral, so he brought white tulips instead.
I had thought that meant he listened.
Now I wondered whether someone had told him what to bring.
The second page was a spreadsheet.
It listed dates, transfers, and notes about the inheritance account. One entry had been highlighted in yellow.
*Marriage established. Awaiting appropriate transfer opportunity.*
I pushed the paper away.
“How could you sit beside me at my wedding knowing this?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I told myself it was only about the money at first. I thought James would use Daniel's relationship with you to get Richard to approve another investment. I didn't understand how far they intended to go.””
“But you stayed involved.””
“Yes.””
“You came to my daughter's birthday party.””
“Yes.””
“You held my hand when I cried because Daniel was becoming cruel.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice shook so badly that I had to stop.
“You knew my husband was hurting me, and you let me believe you were my friend.””
She didn't defend herself.
That was the first honest thing she had done all afternoon.
My father turned to the officer.
“Please record that Vanessa has provided these documents voluntarily. We need the originals preserved and the relevant records verified.””
The officer nodded.
Vanessa reached into the envelope again.
“There is something else.””
She removed a photograph of James and Daniel standing outside a restaurant. The date on the back was eight years old.
“I took this because Daniel told me he was meeting a business associate. I followed him that evening.””
“Why?”” I asked.
“Because I suspected he was lying to me.””
She placed another photograph beside it.
This one showed Daniel entering James's office.
Then she removed a handwritten note.
If Sarah's inheritance cannot be accessed directly, use the business investment as leverage. Richard will eventually protect his daughter, and Daniel will receive the funds through the company.
My father read the note.
His face became rigid.
“They intended to use my investment as a route to her inheritance.””
Vanessa nodded.
“James told Daniel that once Richard had enough money tied up in the company, he could pressure him into releasing more funds. If that failed, Daniel would try to access Sarah's inheritance through legal documents.””
“And the divorce agreement?”” I asked.
“Daniel planned to leave after securing the money.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Was there ever a moment when he loved me?””
Vanessa looked at me for a long time.
“I don't know.””
I hated her for that answer.
I hated her more because it was probably the only one she could honestly give.
My father stood.
“Vanessa, you have provided information that may be relevant to a serious investigation. That does not erase your own involvement.””
“I understand.””
“Then tell us everything you know about James's plan.””
Vanessa nodded and began explaining the financial arrangements. She described meetings, private accounts, and conversations about the inheritance. Some details were specific; others were things James or Daniel had told her, which still needed independent verification.
Then she mentioned a document stored in James's office safe.
“It contains the original plan,” she said.
“The one he prepared before Daniel proposed.””
My father leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
“In a locked cabinet behind the safe. James thinks nobody knows about it.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped him organize the office.””
My father looked at Marcus.
“Contact our attorneys. We will not enter James's property or attempt to retrieve anything ourselves. We'll provide this information to the investigators and let them obtain whatever evidence they can lawfully secure.””
Vanessa nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Sarah, there's one more thing about your mother.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“What?””
“James believed she had made a copy of the original plan before she died.””
My father's face changed.
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know. But James searched her personal papers for years. He never found it.””
I remembered the letter Patricia had brought, the secret account, and the missing inheritance records.
My mother had known James was dangerous long before I did.
And she had hidden something from him.
Something he still feared.
I looked at the email again.
Eight years.
Eight years of marriage, birthdays, apologies, arguments, and promises.
Had Daniel been playing a part from the beginning?
Before I could speak, my father's phone rang.
Robert was calling.
Dad answered.
“Tell me what you've found.””
Robert's voice came through the speaker.
“We've located a second trust application. This one was submitted under a different beneficiary name.””
My father frowned.
“Whose name?””
There was a pause.
Then Robert answered.
“Lily Bennett.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.

My daughter was seven years old.
And someone had tried to use her name to take my mother's money.
