Chapter 5: The Appointment Nobody Told Me About

The Swiss hospital reservation had been made five months earlier.

I read the document three times.

Patient: Lily Carter.

Accompanying adults: Daniel Carter and Margaret Wilson.

Procedure category: Advanced donor assessment.

There was also a note about a private consultation involving a financial trust representative.

I looked at Officer Harris.

“Why would a hospital appointment involve a financial representative?””

“That's something our investigators will need to establish.””

“Can you tell me whether my daughter is in danger?””

He didn't answer immediately.

That frightened me more than anything.

“Right now,” he finally said, “we have no evidence that a medical procedure has taken place or that your daughter has received treatment without authorization. But the documents raise serious concerns.””

I nodded.

My phone vibrated.

Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

Then another message appeared.

Please don't hang up. I found something in Daniel's email. You need to see it.

I looked at Harris.

He nodded.

“Keep the communication. Don't delete anything.””

I called her.

Vanessa answered on the first ring.

“Sarah, I'm so sorry.””

“Tell me what you found.””

“I went through Daniel's laptop while the police were interviewing him. There's a folder called PROJECT LILY.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does it contain?””

“Scanned documents. Medical reports. Trust papers. And an email from a lawyer.””

“Read it to me.””

I heard her typing.

“Here. The subject says: Final arrangements for beneficiary transfer.””

My fingers went cold.

“Beneficiary transfer?””

Vanessa continued.

“The email says that once guardianship is transferred, Lily's legal representative can authorize the trust administration process.””

“Why would a child need a legal representative for an inheritance?””

“Because the trust is worth thirty-eight million dollars.””

I stopped breathing.

Thirty-eight million.

I had spent years working double shifts as a hospital administrator to help pay our mortgage. Daniel had complained about money constantly.

He had told me his company was struggling.

He had even asked me to cancel Lily's swimming lessons because we needed to cut expenses.

Meanwhile, he had been planning around a fortune.

“Vanessa,” I said carefully, “did you know about this?””

“No. I swear. Daniel told me he had a small family inheritance, but he said it belonged to him.””

“Did he tell you why Lily needed to come to London?””

“He said she could save Nathan. He also said that once the medical situation was resolved, Lily would stay with his mother for a while.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you agreed?””

“I thought her mother had agreed. Sarah, I have a four-year-old son who's sick. I was desperate to believe Daniel when he said there was hope.””

For the first time, I understood the full ugliness of what he had done.

He had used Nathan's illness to manipulate Vanessa.

He had used Lily's possible compatibility as a reason to take her.

And he had used my mother to manufacture a custody case.

“Did you find anything about the trust?”” I asked.

“Yes. There's an attached letter from the estate attorney. It says Lily becomes the primary beneficiary when her identity and biological lineage are independently verified.””

I glanced at the DNA report.

“So Daniel discovered she was eligible.””

“Apparently.””

“Then why does he need custody?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Finally, she said, “There's a second paragraph.””

I waited.

“It says the trustee must appoint an authorized adult to manage the beneficiary's financial interests until she turns eighteen.””

My throat tightened.

“Who did Daniel want appointed?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“His mother.””

Patricia.

The same woman who had promised to take Lily to the airport.

I remembered her voice over the phone.

Once she's in London, Sarah won't be able to interfere.

Suddenly, every piece seemed connected.

Patricia wanted control of Lily's inheritance.

Daniel wanted custody.

My mother had signed a statement against me.

And Vanessa had been told that Lily's medical treatment was the only obstacle between Nathan and survival.

But there was still one question.

Why Switzerland?

“Vanessa, what is the name of the facility?””

She read it aloud.

I searched the name on my phone.

It was a private medical center specializing in advanced blood disorders and transplant evaluation.

The website mentioned international patients, private consultations, and donor screening.

I looked at the hospital appointment.

The date was only four days away.

Daniel had planned to fly to London with Lily, then take her to Switzerland.

Without telling me.

Without my consent.

And possibly without any guarantee that she would even be a suitable donor.

I felt sick.

“Vanessa, listen to me. If Daniel contacts you, don't agree to anything. Don't let him take Nathan anywhere without proper medical guidance.””

She began crying.

“I'm scared, Sarah.””

“So am I.””

Then she whispered:

“There's one more email.””

“What does it say?””

“It's from Patricia to Daniel. She says the trust lawyer has approved everything.””

I waited.

Vanessa read the final line.

Once Lily is legally under our control, the real reason for the transfer can proceed.

I stared at the wall.

“The real reason?””

“I don't know.””

“Was there an attachment?””

“Yes.””

“What was it?””

Her voice dropped.

“A scanned document titled BENEFICIARY DEATH CONTINGENCY.””

My blood turned to ice.

Before I could ask another question, Officer Harris entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to move you and Lily somewhere secure.””

“Why?””

He held up his phone.

“Your mother-in-law has just filed an emergency request for temporary guardianship.””

I stared at him.

“Can she do that?””

“She can file a request. It doesn't mean it will be granted.””

Then he showed me the accompanying affidavit.

It claimed I had abducted Lily from her father's care and was refusing to allow necessary medical treatment.

Daniel had apparently decided to turn me into the criminal.

And at the bottom of the affidavit was another signature.

My mother's.
