Chapter 2: The Secret Inside His Suitcase

The security officer placed Daniel's suitcase on a nearby inspection table.

“Don't touch anything,” he instructed.

Daniel looked furious.

“This is a private family matter. You can't just search my belongings.””

“Then you shouldn't have brought disputed custody documents into an international departure area,” the officer replied.

Vanessa picked up the envelope.

Her hands were trembling.

“Daniel, what's this?””

“Put it down.””

She ignored him.

Inside were several medical reports, a hospital letter, and a thick insurance application.

I recognized Lily's full name immediately.

Her date of birth was correct.

So was her pediatrician's name.

The first document was a medical summary from a specialist hospital in London.

I began reading.

My eyes stopped at a sentence halfway down the page.

Potential donor evaluation: Lily Carter, age seven.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Sarah, please.””

“What is this?””

Vanessa had gone completely pale.

She pulled another document from the envelope.

It was a life insurance application.

The coverage amount was three million dollars.

The insured child was Lily.

The applicant was Daniel.

My hands started shaking.

“You took out a three-million-dollar insurance policy on our daughter?””

“It's a financial protection policy,” Daniel answered quickly.

“Then why is it in an envelope with medical records and international travel documents?””

He said nothing.

Vanessa turned another page.

“Daniel, what does this mean? Why does it say Nathan needs a related donor?””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Vanessa, don't.””

She looked at me.

“Nathan has a serious blood disorder. His doctors said he might need a bone marrow transplant.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel told me Lily was being evaluated as a possible donor. He said you knew everything.””

I stared at my husband.

“You were going to take our seven-year-old daughter overseas for a medical procedure without telling me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“It isn't what you think.””

“Then explain it!””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at the floor.

“Nathan's condition has gotten worse. His doctors need a compatible donor. Lily is his biological half-sister. There may be a match.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked down at the paperwork again.

There were appointment dates, laboratory instructions, and a preliminary hospital assessment.

Someone had planned this carefully.

Someone had already made arrangements.

“Did you even ask Lily?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked offended.

“She's seven, Sarah. She doesn't understand these things.””

“She understands when someone hurts her. She understands when her father disappears. And she understands when he's kissing another woman!””

Lily was standing behind my coat, clutching the flowers.

One rose had fallen onto the floor.

She picked it up and held it tightly.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “am I going to have to get a shot?””

Daniel crouched.

“No, sweetheart. Nobody is going to hurt you.””

I pulled Lily behind me.

“Don't promise her something you don't have the right to promise.””

The security officer took the documents.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to tell me whether you authorized any medical treatment or international travel for your daughter.””

“No. Absolutely not.””

Daniel interrupted.

“I'm her father. I have parental rights.””

The officer nodded.

“That's something the appropriate authorities will determine. You cannot simply use a disputed document to remove a child from the country.””

Vanessa was crying openly now.

“You told me Sarah agreed to everything. You said she wanted Lily to help Nathan.””

I turned toward her.

“And you believed him?””

She lowered her head.

“I believed he was divorced.””

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me did.

But the fear in her face looked genuine.

She had apparently been living inside Daniel's lies, too.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Patricia.

Daniel's mother.

Vanessa answered without thinking.

“Hello?””

A sharp female voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, why aren't you answering? I've packed Lily's passport and her clothes. Everything is ready. Sarah can drop her off tomorrow morning, and I'll take her directly to the airport.””

Nobody moved.

Patricia continued.

“Don't worry about the little one. Once she's in London, Sarah won't be able to interfere. Daniel, you need to get this right. Nathan doesn't have much time.””

Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.

I felt the floor tilt beneath me.

My mother-in-law knew.

She had been helping him.

The woman who had held Lily's hand at Christmas, who baked her birthday cakes, who called herself her grandmother, had been preparing to take her out of the country.

I stepped closer to the phone.

“Patricia?””

Silence.

Then a startled gasp.

“Sarah?””

“Yes. It's me.””

“Why are you listening to this?””

“Because you just announced your plan to kidnap my daughter.””

“Don't be dramatic. Daniel explained everything.””

“He explained that he was taking Lily to London without my permission?””

Patricia sighed.

“Sarah, Nathan is an innocent child. He's Daniel's son. You can't expect us to stand by while he dies.””

I glanced at Lily.

She was crying silently.

“And what exactly do you expect me to do? Hand over my daughter?””

Patricia's voice hardened.

“She's Daniel's child too. You don't own her.””

I felt something inside me become very still.

“No,” I said.

“But neither do you.””

The officer ended the call and requested additional assistance.

Daniel sat down heavily.

Vanessa opened the remaining documents.

There was another envelope, smaller than the first.

Inside was a hospital letter and a printed email exchange.

She read the first paragraph.

Then her face changed.

“Daniel?””

He didn't look up.

“What's wrong?””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“You told me Sarah knew.””

He remained silent.

She turned the paper toward him.

“Why does this letter say the donor evaluation is only preliminary? Why does it say no medical procedure can happen without the legal guardian's consent?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Because we haven't completed the legal process.””

“Then why did you tell me everything was approved?””

He had no answer.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I think there's something else you need to see.””

She turned to the final page.

At the bottom was a name.

Not Daniel's.

Not Patricia's.

May you like

It belonged to someone I had trusted with my daughter since the day she was born.

My mother.
