Chapter 11: The Grandfather Who Came Back From the Dead
The police arrived before Daniel could leave.
Rebecca handed over the USB drive and the financial records. Emily provided the documents concerning Grace.
Daniel was taken to a separate interview room.
But my attention was on the name I had just heard.
Richard Hayes.
My biological grandfather.
The man who had supposedly died before I was born.
The man who had suddenly reappeared in our family's life.
And the man Patricia claimed was standing at her house.
An investigator named Detective Miller approached me.
“Mrs. Carter, we have a location for Mr. Hayes.””
“Where?””
“Your mother-in-law's residence.””
“Is Lily there?””
“No. We have confirmed your daughter remains with the family friend you identified.””
I exhaled.
“Can you take me to Patricia's house?””
Detective Miller shook his head.
“Not until we've secured the location. But I can arrange for you to speak with Mr. Hayes under supervision.””
I nodded.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the back of a police vehicle.
My hands were shaking.
I kept thinking about the photograph from the hospital.
The man beside my newborn daughter.
Martin Cole.
Daniel.
My mother.
And the mysterious fourth person.
What had they done before Lily was born?
When we arrived at Patricia's house, a uniformed officer opened the front door.
I heard shouting from inside.
Patricia's voice.
“You have no right to come here!””
A man's voice answered.
“I have every right. This family has been stealing from me for twelve years.””
I entered the living room.
Patricia stood near the fireplace, gripping a glass of water.
Beside the window was an older man wearing a dark suit.
Silver hair.
A scar above his left eyebrow.
Richard Hayes.
He turned toward me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said my name.
“Sarah.””
I stared at him.
“Who are you?””
He lowered his eyes.
“Your grandfather.””
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
He swallowed.
“Because I made a terrible decision.””
I stepped closer.
“You allowed my mother to tell me my father had died. You allowed Thomas to raise me without knowing the truth. And now my daughter is caught in some inheritance scheme.””
Richard looked toward Patricia.
“That's why I'm here.””
Patricia slammed her glass onto the table.
“Don't pretend you're some innocent victim!””
Richard turned.
“You knew about the trust.””
“You disappeared!””
“Because Martin threatened my family.””
Patricia laughed bitterly.
“Martin? You were the one who created this mess!””
Detective Miller stepped between them.
“Both of you need to calm down.””
Richard reached into his jacket and removed a small leather folder.
“Sarah, there's something you need to understand. Thomas didn't create that trust for the family fortune.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did he create it?””
“To protect you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard opened the folder.
Inside was an old photograph of two young men.
Thomas and Richard.
They looked remarkably alike.
Richard pointed to Thomas.
“Your uncle discovered that Martin had been transferring money out of my company. When I confronted him, Martin threatened to expose a secret that could destroy our entire family.””
“What secret?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
“Thomas discovered that Martin had falsified my death certificate.””
My breath caught.
“He made everyone believe you were dead?””
“Yes. I was forced to disappear after an attempted attack. Thomas arranged for me to live under another identity.””
I shook my head.
“Why didn't you come back?””
“Because Martin controlled the business. He threatened to harm anyone connected to me. Thomas believed the safest thing was to keep you away from the entire family.””
I stared at the photograph.
“And Lily?””
Richard's expression softened.
“When Thomas learned you were pregnant, he contacted me. He wanted to make sure his granddaughter would be protected.””
“Then why did he leave the trust to Lily?””
“Because he knew Martin would eventually come looking for the money.””
Patricia interrupted.
“That's nonsense!””
Richard turned toward her.
“Then explain the medical records.””
She said nothing.
He placed another document on the table.
It was an original letter from Thomas, dated three weeks before his death.
I recognized his handwriting.
If anything happens to me, the trust must remain protected for Sarah's child. Martin must never become its administrator. He has already demonstrated that he values money more than human life.
My eyes filled with tears.
Thomas had known.
He had been trying to protect me even before Lily was born.
Richard continued.
“Martin discovered the trust amendment six months ago. He contacted Daniel and offered him a share of the money if he could secure legal control of Lily.””
I looked at Patricia.
“And you agreed?””
She folded her arms.
“I was trying to protect my grandson.””
“Which one?””
She didn't answer.
“Nathan? Lily? Or the money?””
Her face hardened.
“You have no idea what Daniel has sacrificed for this family.””
I felt my voice rise.
“He sacrificed his daughter.””
Richard placed another photograph on the table.
It showed three children.
Lily.
Nathan.
And Grace.
All three were connected to the same trust.
But there was a handwritten note on the back.
Three children. One original beneficiary. One concealed heir. One child whose identity must remain secret.
I looked at Richard.
“Who is the third child?””
He shook his head.
“That's what I've been trying to discover.””
Detective Miller took the photograph.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Martin's former office.””
Richard reached into his folder again.
This time, he produced a document with an official hospital seal.
“There's something else. Daniel didn't arrange Lily's medical evaluation because of Nathan.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“Because Lily may have inherited a rare genetic marker from her biological father. Martin believes that marker is connected to an experimental treatment he has been funding for years.””
I stared at him.
“What treatment?””
Before Richard could answer, his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
Then his face went pale.
“It's the hospital.””
He answered.
A nurse spoke urgently.
“Mr. Hayes, you need to come immediately. We found another file in the archived maternity records.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“What does it say?””
The nurse paused.
Then she replied:
“It confirms that the baby registered as Sarah Carter's daughter may not have been the only child born under that identity.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
Then he looked at me.
“Sarah, I think you may have a twin.””
