Chapter 10: The Signature That Should Never Have Existed
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I stared at the consent form lying on the conference table.
My signature was at the bottom.
My full legal name.
Sarah Margaret Carter.
The handwriting looked exactly like mine.
But I had never seen that document before.
“Emily,” I whispered, “where did you get this?””
She pulled a chair closer.
“From a storage unit Daniel rented under a different name. I found it while looking for Grace's medical records.””
Rebecca picked up the document carefully.
“Was this notarized?””
“Yes,” Emily replied.
“There's a notary stamp on the second page.””
Rebecca examined it.
“The notary's name is Margaret Wilson.””
My mother.
I felt nauseated.
“Why would my mother have this?””
Emily looked at me sadly.
“Because she was involved from the beginning.””
I stood.
“No. She helped me prepare for Lily's birth. She was there when I brought her home. She held my daughter.””
Emily didn't interrupt.
I paced toward the window.
My mother had attended every birthday party. She had bought Lily her first bicycle. She had taken photographs of her granddaughter sleeping in the hospital.
And now I was discovering that she might have been involved in a scheme before Lily had even been born.
Rebecca turned the second page.
“There's a clause here that needs explaining.””
She read silently, then looked at Emily.
“This says the document only becomes effective if a biological identity dispute is established and confirmed by a court.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily took a breath.
“Daniel and Martin wanted a way to remove you from Lily's inheritance without openly challenging your custody.””
“Why?””
“Because if they could prove Lily had a different biological father, they believed they could trigger this agreement.””
I looked at the paper.
“But I am her mother.””
“Exactly,” Rebecca said.
“And this document cannot simply erase your parental rights. Even if your signature were authentic, it would not automatically transfer custody or authorize anyone to make medical decisions for Lily.””
I felt a little relief.
Then Rebecca pointed toward the signature.
“But we need to determine whether this was forged or whether someone obtained it through deception.””
Emily leaned forward.
“Sarah, there's something else.””
She removed a small USB drive from her handbag.
“Daniel kept copies of his correspondence with Martin. I found this in the same storage unit.””
Rebecca connected it to her laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were dozens of scanned documents.
One file was labeled:
*PROJECT FAMILY — ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
Rebecca opened it.
The first page contained a photograph of my mother sitting beside Martin Cole.
The date was seven years earlier.
Beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
Margaret confirms Sarah will not question the biological arrangements. Thomas's trust will remain protected until the first child is born.
I covered my mouth.
“What biological arrangements?””
Emily looked down.
“That's what I was trying to tell you.””
She opened another file.
It was an email from Martin to Daniel.
The subject line read:
The second-generation plan.
The email described the birth of two children, both connected to Richard Hayes's family line.
Lily.
Grace.
But there was something more disturbing.
The plan referred to the girls as competing beneficiaries.
It suggested that whichever child was recognized first would receive control of the trust's primary assets.
The other child would receive a smaller settlement.
Rebecca stopped reading.
“Who approved this?””
Emily pointed to the bottom of the email.
Martin Cole.
Patricia Carter.
Margaret Wilson.
And Daniel Carter.
My husband.
I gripped the back of my chair.
“Why would my mother agree to this?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because she believed Thomas had stolen something from Richard. She thought this was her chance to reclaim the family fortune.””
“But Thomas was her husband.””
“He was also the man who raised you. And apparently, he left her very little after he died.””
I stared at the screen.
“So she used me?””
Emily nodded.
“I'm afraid so.””
Then Rebecca opened another document.
It was a spreadsheet listing payments made to various people.
Several payments had gone to Margaret Wilson.
Others had gone to Patricia Carter.
One was labeled MEDICAL CONSULTING.
The recipient was a private clinic in Switzerland.
I pointed at the amount.
“Two hundred thousand dollars?””
Rebecca examined the transaction.
“It's a substantial payment.””
Emily looked horrified.
“That's the clinic where Daniel planned to take Lily.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Was Nathan involved?””
Emily shook her head.
“I don't know. But I believe Daniel used Nathan's illness to make the entire arrangement look like a desperate family medical situation.””
Rebecca closed the file.
“We need to get this information to the investigators immediately.””
Before she could pick up her phone, the conference room door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
“That's enough.””
Emily jumped to her feet.
“You shouldn't be here!””
Daniel ignored her.
He looked directly at me.
“Sarah, we need to talk privately.””
I didn't move.
“There's nothing left to discuss.””
He pointed at the laptop.
“You have no idea what you're looking at.””
I turned the screen toward him.
“Then explain why you paid a Swiss clinic two hundred thousand dollars.””
His face changed.
For the first time since the airport, he looked genuinely frightened.
“Who gave you that?””
“Does it matter?””
He glanced at Rebecca.
“Those documents are confidential.””
Rebecca stood.
“Mr. Carter, you need to leave. The police have been notified.””
Daniel ignored her.
He looked at Emily.
“Where's Grace?””
Emily stepped backward.
“You're never getting near my daughter again.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Then he turned to me.
“Sarah, if you care about Lily, you'll stop digging.””
I stared at him.
“Is that a threat?””
He leaned closer.
“No. It's a warning.””
And then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The name displayed was Patricia.
He answered.
“Mom?””
A woman's panicked voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel, we have a problem. Richard is at the house.””
Daniel went completely still.
Then Patricia added:
“He says he has proof that Lily isn't the only child who can inherit.””
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time, I saw something worse than guilt in his eyes.
Fear.
