Chapter 9: The Letter From a Dead Man
I didn't sleep that night.
Noah fell asleep beside me in the guest bedroom, still holding his blue toy truck.
Every few minutes, I checked that he was breathing.
At 6:30 a.m., I called my attorney, Rebecca Mills.
She had handled Sarah's estate and drafted the trust agreement.
When I explained what I'd found, she became unusually quiet.
"Marcus, I need you to bring me every original document Sarah left behind.""
"Why?""
"Because there's something I never told you.""
I sat upright.
"What?""
"Sarah instructed me to keep a sealed letter in the event of suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.""
My heart began pounding.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she specifically instructed me not to release it unless you discovered evidence of medical interference or attempted property fraud.""
I looked toward Noah.
"I've discovered both.""
"Then come to my office at nine.""
Before hanging up, Rebecca added something.
"Marcus, don't bring Vanessa. And don't tell Daniel where you're going.""
At 8:45, I arrived at her office.
Rebecca was waiting behind her desk.
A sealed manila envelope sat in front of her.
"Before you open this," she said, "I need you to understand that Sarah was terrified during her final months.""
I sat down.
"Did she know she was going to die?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"I don't think she knew when. But she believed someone was deliberately putting her life in danger.""
She slid the envelope toward me.
Sarah's handwriting covered the front.
*FOR MY HUSBAND.*
I opened it.
Inside was a letter dated four days before her final hospitalization.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, then something happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.
I need you to understand that I didn't hide the truth because I stopped trusting you. I hid it because I discovered that the people closest to us were being watched.
I stopped.
Rebecca waited silently.
I continued.
Your father came to see me three months ago. He brought documents showing that someone had been accessing our family accounts for years.
My hands began trembling.
He told me he had made a terrible mistake when you were younger. He had trusted someone with information about our family that should never have left his office.
That person was Dr. Harrison.
I looked up.
"How did my father know him?""
Rebecca folded her hands.
"Your father invested in a medical research company years ago. Dr. Harrison was one of its consultants.""
I returned to the letter.
Your father discovered that Harrison had been falsifying patient records and diverting research funds. He tried to expose him. Instead, someone threatened to reveal a secret that could destroy our family.
My mouth went dry.
Marcus, your father wasn't protecting Dr. Harrison because he trusted him. He was trying to keep him away from you.
The next paragraph was underlined.
And then Vanessa appeared.
I stopped reading.
Rebecca leaned forward.
"There's more.""
I continued.
Vanessa didn't meet you by chance. She approached your brother first. Daniel introduced you because she wanted access to your family.
I found photographs of her meeting Dr. Harrison years before your wedding. She had been using different names, but the face was unmistakable.
I stared at the paper.
There is one more thing I need you to know.
My eyes moved to the final paragraph.
The DNA test in the red box was never meant to establish Noah's paternity. It was meant to identify the person who had been secretly collecting samples from our family.
I stopped breathing.
If Daniel tells you he is Noah's father, ask him why he was so desperate to believe that.
I looked at Rebecca.
"Do you know what this means?""
She shook her head.
"Not yet.""
The letter continued.
The real truth is in the metal cabinet your father kept in his study. The key is with you. Inside is a recording that explains everything.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Then I reached the final line.
Marcus, I loved you. I loved Noah. And I need you to promise me one thing.
Don't let them turn our son into a weapon against you.
I lowered the letter.
Rebecca slid another document across the desk.
It was a photograph of my father standing outside a medical office.
Beside him was Dr. Harrison.
And between them stood a little girl.
Approximately five years old.
I looked closer.
The girl had Sarah's eyes.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"Who is this child?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"I was hoping you could tell me.""
I examined the photograph.
A date was printed on the back.
Twenty years earlier.
Then I noticed something written beneath it in my father's handwriting.
*Our agreement ends when the child turns eighteen.*
I felt my stomach twist.
"My father had another child?""
Rebecca didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her desk drawer and removed a second envelope.
"This arrived yesterday. It was addressed to Sarah, but the sender specifically requested that I deliver it to you.""
I opened it.
There was a single photograph.
The same little girl.
Now an adult woman.
Standing outside my father's old study.
And beside her was Vanessa.
On the back, someone had written:
*SHE KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO SARAH.*
I stared at the photograph.
Then my phone rang.
An unfamiliar woman spoke.
"Mr. Reed? My name is Emily Harrison.""
I froze.
She continued.
"I'm Dr. Harrison's daughter. I know why Vanessa married you, and I know what your father was trying to hide.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who are you?""
Her answer made the room go silent.
"I'm the little girl in your father's photograph.""
May you like
Then she whispered:
"And Noah isn't the only child Sarah was trying to protect.""
