Chapter 14: The Recording That Changed Everything
My mother survived.
The bullet had struck her shoulder, and paramedics transported her to the hospital under police protection.
Officer Collins found a discarded handgun near the church parking lot, but the shooter had escaped.
I stood outside the emergency room, staring at the blood on my shirt.
Emily sat beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, my phone rang.
Rebecca.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"At the hospital. Someone shot my mother.""
"What?""
"She's alive. But there's something else. She says Vanessa has the original recording from Sarah's hospital room.""
Rebecca went quiet.
Then she said, "I think I know where Vanessa is.""
"Where?""
"Your company's headquarters.""
I frowned.
"Why would she go there?""
"Because she filed an emergency corporate transfer request this morning. She claims she's the legal representative of the trust's beneficiary.""
I immediately stood.
"She's trying to take Noah's company.""
"Not just the company. She's trying to liquidate the research assets before investigators freeze them.""
I looked toward Emily.
She had heard everything.
"She's going after the patents," Emily said.
I called Officer Collins.
Within minutes, we were heading downtown.
When we reached the building, Vanessa's car was parked outside.
The security guard recognized me.
"Mr. Reed, your wife went upstairs about twenty minutes ago.""
"Did she take anything?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"She brought a large black case.""
I ran toward the elevators.
Officer Collins followed.
The executive floor was almost empty.
The conference room door stood open.
Vanessa was sitting at the head of the table, surrounded by documents.
She looked up.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she smiled.
"Marcus. I was wondering when you'd arrive.""
I walked toward her.
"Give me the recording.""
She tilted her head.
"What recording?""
"The hospital recording.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're beginning to sound like Sarah.""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
She opened her handbag and removed a small digital recorder.
"Your wife was very clever. She recorded everything.""
My heart pounded.
"Play it.""
Vanessa pressed a button.
Sarah's voice filled the room.
"Please stop. I don't want that medicine.""
Then my mother's voice.
"Eleanor, just give it to her.""
A third voice spoke.
Vanessa.
"She needs to drink it. We can't keep waiting.""
Then another voice.
Daniel.
"She said no. Maybe we should stop.""
Vanessa snapped.
"You've already gone too far to back out.""
The recording continued.
My mother began crying.
"Vanessa, you said this would only make her sleep.""
Vanessa answered coldly.
"Then stop asking questions.""
There was a pause.
Then Sarah spoke again.
"Marcus knows. He'll find out everything.""
A glass shattered.
And Dr. Harrison's voice entered the recording.
"She's becoming dangerous. Give her the full dose.""
I felt my legs weaken.
The recording ended.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You killed her.""
Vanessa slowly put the recorder away.
"Your wife was destroying everything.""
"She was dying.""
"She was threatening to expose people who had spent their entire lives building something.""
I stared at her.
"People? You mean you and Harrison?""
She leaned forward.
"Your father, my father, your mother, Daniel. Everyone had something to lose.""
I shook my head.
"And Sarah was the price?""
Vanessa stood.
"Sarah was supposed to sign the transfer documents. She refused. Then she discovered the research files.""
"Why did you marry me?""
Vanessa looked almost amused.
"Because your father told me you were easy to influence. You were grieving. You wanted someone to help raise Noah.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"Did you ever love him?""
She glanced toward the window.
"Children are useful when people trust you.""
Something inside me snapped.
Officer Collins stepped between us.
"Mrs. Reed, you're under arrest pending further investigation into the evidence presented.""
Vanessa didn't resist.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.
"Before you take me anywhere, Marcus should read this.""
She placed it on the table.
It was a court order.
An emergency petition for temporary guardianship of Noah.
The judge's signature appeared at the bottom.
I scanned the first page.
My name was listed as an unfit parent.
The supporting evidence included medical records, financial statements, and a psychological evaluation.
I looked up.
"These are fake.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Are they?""
Officer Collins took the papers.
"We'll verify them.""
Vanessa stepped closer to me.
"Your brother signed a statement claiming you were emotionally unstable. Your mother confirmed it. And Sarah's doctor documented your inability to make rational decisions during her final illness.""
I stared at her.
"Daniel wouldn't do that.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Ask him.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca.
*Marcus, don't leave the building. I just received confirmation that the guardianship order is authentic. Someone filed evidence against you yesterday.*
Another message appeared.
*The judge has scheduled an emergency hearing for tomorrow morning.*
I looked at Officer Collins.
"Can she really take my son?""
He didn't answer immediately.
"That depends on what the court believes.""
Vanessa smiled.
Then she leaned toward me and whispered:
"Tomorrow, Noah comes with me.""
Officer Collins escorted her out.
I stood in the conference room, staring at the court papers.
Then Rebecca called again.
"Marcus, there's another problem.""
"What now?""
"The judge who signed Vanessa's emergency petition was also involved in your father's medical research company.""
I closed my eyes.
Rebecca continued.
"And there's a document attached to the filing that I think you need to see.""
"What document?""
"A sworn statement from Sarah.""
I stopped breathing.
"That's impossible. She's dead.""
"I know.""
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"But the statement is dated three days before she died, and it says she wanted Vanessa to become Noah's guardian.""
I stared at the empty chair where Vanessa had been sitting.
Then I understood.
May you like
Someone had forged Sarah's final wishes.
And tomorrow, they intended to use them to take my son.
