Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Betrayal

I paused the video.

The third person had entered only seconds before the recording ended.

But I recognized the shoes.

Black leather.

A silver buckle.

A small scratch near the left heel.

I had bought those shoes for my brother.

Daniel.

My younger brother had been the best man at my wedding to Sarah.

He had held my shoulder at her funeral and promised he would always look after Noah.

He was also the person who had introduced me to Vanessa.

I stared at the frozen image.

"No," I whispered.

Noah looked up.

"Daddy, who is that?""

I closed the laptop halfway.

"Someone I need to talk to.""

A loud knock interrupted me.

"Marcus, enough!"" Vanessa shouted from the hallway.

"You're scaring Noah!""

I turned toward the door.

"Leave us alone.""

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

I heard her footsteps retreat.

Then I heard something else.

The front door opening.

And a familiar male voice.

"What's going on?""

Daniel.

I felt my jaw tighten.

I opened the office door but kept Noah behind me.

My brother stood in the hallway wearing his expensive navy suit. He carried a bottle of champagne and a gift bag.

"Hey, little man!"" he said, looking past me.

"Happy birthday!""

Noah didn't move.

Daniel's smile faded.

"What's wrong?""

I held up the blue toy truck.

Daniel's eyes dropped to it.

For one brief second, his expression changed.

It was almost invisible.

But I saw it.

His smile disappeared before he forced it back.

"Where did you get that?""

I stepped closer.

"That's what I want to know.""

Daniel glanced toward the office.

"Marcus, can we talk privately?""

"No. We're going to talk right here.""

Vanessa appeared behind him.

"Daniel, tell him he's being ridiculous.""

My brother looked at her.

Then he looked at me.

"What happened?""

I opened the laptop again and turned it toward him.

The video was still paused.

The third person stood frozen in the frame.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His face drained of color.

I heard Noah whisper, "Daddy, that's Uncle Daniel.""

Daniel slowly set the champagne bottle on the hallway table.

"Marcus, you don't understand what you're looking at.""

"Then explain it.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"That footage could be edited.""

"Is that your voice on the recording?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel, were you in my bedroom two nights before Sarah died?""

Vanessa interrupted.

"He's trying to manipulate you! Sarah was sick, Marcus. You know how much medication she was taking!""

I turned toward her.

"How do you know what's in that recording if you haven't watched it?""

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Daniel stepped between us.

"Listen. I made mistakes. But everything I did was to protect this family.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect which family? Mine or yours?""

He looked toward Noah.

"Not in front of the boy.""

I lowered my voice.

"You were in my wife's bedroom while she was dying.""

Daniel's eyes filled with something that looked almost like guilt.

"I didn't know how bad things would get.""

"Get?""

He swallowed.

"Marcus, the money was supposed to be temporary. Vanessa said Sarah had already agreed to everything.""

I stared at him.

"Sarah was dead when you started moving the money.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Stop talking.""

That was when I understood.

They weren't simply afraid of the recording.

They were afraid of what Daniel might reveal.

I pulled out my phone.

"Nobody leaves until I understand what happened.""

Vanessa immediately raised her voice.

"You cannot hold us here! This is my house too!""

"No," I said.

"It isn't.""

Her expression changed.

I had never spoken to her that way.

Daniel glanced at the blue truck again.

"Marcus, give me the USB.""

I stepped backward.

"Why?""

"Because there are things on it that could destroy people who don't deserve it.""

I stared at him.

"Such as?""

He hesitated.

Then he said, "Sarah wasn't supposed to find out about the insurance policy.""

My blood ran cold.

"What insurance policy?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel realized his mistake.

I grabbed the edge of the hallway table.

"Daniel, what insurance policy?""

He looked toward the front door.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

"Now.""

He finally spoke.

"Sarah's life insurance policy. The beneficiary was changed shortly before she died.""

I felt the hallway tilt.

"Changed to whom?""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head slightly.

But he continued.

"Vanessa.""

Noah began crying.

I pulled him against me.

"That's enough.""

Daniel reached for my shoulder.

I pushed his hand away.

"Don't touch me.""

My phone was still in my other hand.

I called the police.

Vanessa lunged toward it.

"Marcus, don't you dare!""

I stepped away.

The call connected.

"911. What's your emergency?""

I gave them our address and explained that I had discovered evidence of possible financial fraud and suspicious medical activity involving my late wife.

Vanessa began pacing.

Daniel stood motionless.

Then my phone vibrated.

An incoming message appeared from an unknown number.

*STOP PLAYING SARAH'S VIDEOS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT SHE REALLY DID.*

A second message arrived.

*CHECK THE RED DOCUMENT BOX. SHE DIDN'T HIDE THE DEED THERE. SHE HID SOMETHING MUCH WORSE.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*YOUR BROTHER ISN'T THE ONLY PERSON WHO HELPED VANESSA.*

I slowly raised my eyes.

May you like

Across the hallway, Daniel was staring at my phone.

And for the first time, my brother looked more frightened than Vanessa.
