Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back for the Evidence
I reached the living room in seconds.
The front window was shattered.
Glass covered the carpet.
Noah stood beside the staircase, clutching Sarah's old photograph.
An officer was already moving toward the broken window.
"Sir, stay back!""
I grabbed Noah and pulled him behind me.
"Are you hurt?""
He shook his head.
"Someone was outside, Daddy.""
"Did you see them?""
He nodded.
"A man in a black jacket. He looked at me.""
Officer Collins spoke into his radio.
"Possible intruder fleeing northbound. Request another unit.""
I looked toward the hallway.
Daniel was gone.
"Where's my brother?""
The officer turned.
"Which one?""
"Daniel. He was upstairs with me.""
Officer Collins frowned.
"He left through the back door about thirty seconds ago.""
I stared at him.
"Why did you let him leave?""
"We didn't have grounds to detain him.""
I looked toward the broken window.
The unknown messages.
The warning from Evelyn.
Daniel's confession.
Everything was connected.
Then Noah tugged my sleeve.
"Daddy, I know that man.""
I knelt.
"What man?""
"The one outside.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who was he?""
Noah hesitated.
"He came to the house last week. Vanessa let him into her bedroom.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Did you hear his name?""
Noah nodded.
"She called him Mr. Harrison.""
Dr. Harrison.
I stood and looked at Officer Collins.
"I need to show you something else.""
We returned to the office.
I opened the laptop and showed him Sarah's recording again.
He watched the entire thing without speaking.
When it ended, he took out his notebook.
"Mr. Reed, I strongly recommend you preserve all original files and avoid contacting anyone involved.""
"What about Dr. Harrison?""
"We'll need to establish whether the recording supports a criminal investigation. Medical records and prescription history will also matter.""
I nodded.
"Can you help me get those records?""
"We can explain the proper process. You'll also need a lawyer experienced in criminal and estate matters.""
I looked at Noah.
"What happens to him?""
The officer's expression softened.
"He's safe with you for now. We'll document what happened today.""
A few minutes later, Vanessa emerged from the dining room.
She had changed completely.
Her eyes were dry.
Her hair was perfect.
She held her handbag as if she were leaving for a dinner reservation.
"Marcus," she said, "I'm going to my sister's.""
I stepped in front of her.
"You're not taking anything from this house.""
She laughed.
"You can't stop me.""
"I can stop you from going near Noah.""
Her face hardened.
"He's my stepson.""
"That doesn't give you the right to terrorize him.""
She leaned closer.
"You really think Sarah was innocent? You have no idea what that woman did behind your back.""
I felt my fists tighten.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa smiled.
It was the same smile she had worn when she told Noah to scrub the floor.
"Ask Daniel who paid for Sarah's final treatment.""
Officer Collins stepped forward.
"Ma'am, that's enough.""
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"Ask your brother why he agreed to help Sarah disappear from your life.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She adjusted the strap of her handbag.
"You're not ready to hear the truth.""
Then she walked toward the front door.
The officer followed her outside to take a formal statement.
I stood in the living room, trying to understand what she'd just said.
Noah approached slowly.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
"Yes, buddy?""
"Mommy told me something before she died.""
I knelt.
"What?""
He looked toward the staircase.
"She said if Vanessa ever came into our house, I should never let her sleep in the bedroom where Mommy used to sleep.""
My heart tightened.
"Why?""
"Because Mommy said she put something under the floor.""
I froze.
"Under which floor?""
Noah pointed toward the staircase.
"The bedroom floor. Under the wooden board next to Mommy's old nightstand.""
I remembered the room.
I hadn't slept there since Sarah died.
Vanessa had insisted we use the master bedroom after our wedding, but she'd also demanded that the old furniture be replaced.
Except for one piece.
Sarah's nightstand.
Vanessa had never allowed me to move it.
I went upstairs.
Noah followed, holding my hand.
The master bedroom smelled faintly of Vanessa's expensive perfume.
I moved the nightstand away from the wall.
The wooden floor beneath it looked slightly different from the surrounding boards.
One plank had a tiny scratch near the edge.
I knelt and pressed against it.
It shifted.
Using a flat screwdriver, I lifted the board.
Beneath it was a small metal container wrapped in plastic.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
Inside was another USB drive, a hospital identification badge, and a sealed envelope.
The badge belonged to a nurse named Laura Bennett.
The envelope had Sarah's handwriting.
*Marcus, if you've found this, then Vanessa has probably already told you that I was hiding something. Don't believe her. The truth is in the hospital records.*
I opened the envelope.
A second page fell out.
It contained a handwritten list of dates, medication names, and signatures.
At the bottom, Sarah had written one final sentence.
*The person who changed my medication wasn't Dr. Harrison. It was someone I trusted enough to let into our home.*
I looked at the nurse's badge.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID showed Evelyn Price.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
Her voice was trembling.
"Marcus, listen carefully. I found the hospital's original medication log.""
"What does it say?""
"Sarah's final prescription was altered three times. The first two changes were approved by Dr. Harrison.""
"And the third?""
Evelyn went silent.
"Marcus, the third change was authorized using your signature.""
I stopped breathing.
"That's impossible.""
"I know. That's why I checked the hospital's access records.""
"Who used my signature?""
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
Then she whispered a name.
"Your wife, Marcus. Vanessa used your identity.""
I looked down at the metal container.
But before I could respond, Evelyn said something even worse.
"There's one more thing. The hospital has security footage showing who entered Sarah's room that night.""
"Who?""
"Your brother, Daniel.""
A loud knock suddenly sounded at my front door.
Three sharp blows.
Then a woman's voice called from outside.
"Marcus Reed? My name is Laura Bennett. I was Sarah's nurse.""
I rushed downstairs.
Through the glass, I saw a woman holding a thick brown folder.
Her face was pale.
And she was crying.
"Please," she said when I opened the door.
"You have to let me explain what happened to your wife.""
May you like
Then she glanced over my shoulder.
"Because the person who ordered me to change Sarah's medication is standing right behind you.""
