Chapter 9: The Marriage My Father Hid
I read the name three times.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Robert Hale.*
My father.
And beside him:
*Evelyn Carter.*
Claire’s mother.
The paper shook in my hands.
“No.””
Lily watched me carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
“This is fake.””
“It’s not.””
“My father was married to Claire’s mother?””
“Yes.””
“That means Claire…”
“Your stepsister.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
I stepped back.
The hotel lobby spun.
“No.””
Lily lowered her eyes.
“I found the records years ago.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know if you would believe me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently nobody tells me anything.””
Behind me, my father said:
“Daniel.””
I turned slowly.
“How long?””
He looked away.
“How long were you married to her?””
Dad was silent.
“That’s what I thought.””
“It was before your mother.””
“Then why hide it?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because of what happened after.””
“What happened?””
He looked at Lily.
“She found out about the money.””
Lily’s expression hardened.
“Tell him.””
My father sat down.
“Evelyn wasn’t who I thought she was.””
Claire’s voice suddenly came from behind us.
“She never is.””
We all turned.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Her wedding dress was still perfect.
But her face was broken.
She looked at Lily.
“I didn’t know she was alive.””
Lily stared at her.
“You knew enough.””
Claire shook her head.
“I knew my mother believed Robert destroyed our family.””
“And you believed her.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“That’s why I got close to you.””
The honesty was worse than another lie.
My chest tightened.
“You admit it?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“I was supposed to find evidence against your father.””
“And then?””
“I fell in love with you.””
Nobody spoke.
I wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But I remembered every morning coffee.
Every late-night conversation.
Every moment that felt real.
“Was any of it real?””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“That was the one thing I didn’t plan.””
Lily looked at her coldly.
“Love didn’t stop you from hurting his mother.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
“You destroyed a family.””
My father stood.
“Enough.””
Lily turned toward him.
“No. Not enough.””
She pointed at him.
“You let everyone believe I was dead.””
“I was protecting you.””
“You were protecting your secret.””
My father’s face changed.
I noticed.
A small reaction.
A hesitation.
And suddenly I understood.
There was still something missing.
“What secret?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my father.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He looked older than I had ever seen him.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I’m done hearing pieces.””
I held up the documents.
“I want the whole truth.””
My mother appeared behind him.
Her face was pale.
“Robert.””
Dad closed his eyes.
Then he finally said:
“The night Lily disappeared…”
Everyone waited.
“She wasn’t the only person who was hurt.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked directly at me.
“You were injured too.””
I felt my breath stop.
“I don’t remember.””
“Because we made you forget.””
The words froze the room.
My mother started crying.
Lily looked away.
Claire whispered:
“What did you do?””
My father reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old medical report.
“My son had trauma after the attack.””
I stared at the paper.
“Attack?””
Dad nodded.
“And the memory you lost…”
He swallowed.
“Was the reason Lily survived.””
I looked at him.
“What did I see?””
Nobody moved.
Then my mother whispered:
“You saw who tried to kill your sister.””
My fingers tightened around the report.
“Who?””
My father looked at Lily.
Then at my mother.
Then finally at me.
And he said:
“The person who attacked Lily…”
A pause.
A painful silence.
“…was someone you trusted more than anyone.””
Behind us, the ballroom doors opened.
And a voice said:
“Daniel.””
I turned.
The person standing there made my blood run cold.
Because I knew her.
I had seen her at every family holiday.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
May you like
My aunt.
And she was holding the same kind of knife shown in Lily’s childhood drawing.
