Chapter 12: The Room Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The word stayed in my mind.

Basement.

Not my parents’ basement.

Not the storage room.

Another basement.

A place I had forgotten.

A place my mind had buried.

“I don’t know any basement,” I said.

My father looked away.

That was the worst possible answer.

Because he wasn’t confused.

He was afraid.

“Dad.””

He didn’t respond.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“You know.””

His silence confirmed it.

My mother began crying.

“Robert, tell him.””

He sat down.

“I thought we were past this.””

“Past what?””

“Past the part where our family falls apart.””

I laughed.

“It already fell apart.””

The words hurt him.

But I needed them to.

“I spent my entire life believing my sister was dead.””

My voice broke.

“And she was alive.””

I looked at Lily.

“I lost her twice.””

Lily looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because she understood.

My father rubbed his face.

“The basement was under your grandfather’s old property.””

“Why was Lily there?””

“She wasn’t supposed to be.””

“Then why?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Because Evelyn took her.””

Claire whispered:

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked shocked.

“She told me Robert abandoned me.””

My father nodded.

“She wanted revenge.””

I looked at Claire.

“And you knew?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

For the first time all night, I believed her.

“She never told me that.””

Lily looked at her.

“But she used me.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

I walked away from them.

I needed air.

I needed space.

But the memories kept coming.

A dark room.

A wooden door.

Lily crying.

A voice telling me:

“Forget this.””

I grabbed the wall.

“Daniel?””

My mother rushed toward me.

“I remember.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

I closed my eyes.

“The basement.””

The room disappeared.

I was eleven again.

Small.

Scared.

Standing in a cold underground room.

Lily was sitting on the floor.

Her face was dirty.

She was crying.

Then the door opened.

Someone entered.

Not Rebecca.

Not my father.

Someone else.

I opened my eyes.

“It was Evelyn.””

Claire covered her mouth.

I continued.

“She had Lily.””

Lily stared at me.

“You saw?””

I nodded.

“I saw everything.””

“What?””

I swallowed.

“She wasn’t trying to kill you.””

Everyone looked confused.

“She was trying to make you disappear.””

Lily stepped closer.

“Why?””

I looked at her.

“Because she said you weren’t Robert’s daughter.””

Silence.

Claire looked horrified.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know if it was true.””

My father stood suddenly.

“Daniel.””

But I kept going.

“She told Lily that Robert wasn’t her father.””

Lily’s face changed.

A painful realization.

“She lied.””

“Maybe.””

I looked at my father.

“Was she lying?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was worse than anything.

Then my father whispered:

“No.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

My father looked at her.

“She wasn’t lying.””

The room went completely still.

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“Dad?””

He looked at Lily.

“I’m not your biological father.””

Lily stepped back.

“No.””

My mother started crying.

“Robert…”

“I should have told her years ago.””

Lily’s voice trembled.

“Then who is?””

My father looked down.

Then toward Rebecca.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Rebecca went pale.

“No.””

My father whispered:

“The man who was there that night.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Dad looked at her.

“Your real father.””

A long silence.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“Don’t.””

But it was too late.

My father said the name.

The same name from the first letter.

The name nobody wanted spoken.

“Martin Cole.””

At that exact moment, the basement door upstairs slammed shut.

And a voice echoed from the hallway.

“Now you finally know.””

Everyone turned.

Martin stood there.

Smiling.

May you like

And behind him was the one person nobody expected.

My mother.
